It was a mere 30 years after the regions first Cabernet Sauvignon was planted by Dr. Stanley Hoffman and the legendary André Tchelistcheff an exciting and pivotal time in the regions history. Entrepreneurs who would become known as pioneers of the region were experimenting and making discoveries that would shape the future of the Paso Robles wine industry. It is this spirit that drew the two longtime friends and agriculturalists to the region, and inspired them to purchase land that would become their first of six Paso Robles estate vineyards.

Aromas of roasted black cherry, fig, caramel and milk chocolate make for a rich and gooey entry to the nose of this appellation blend. Lavish, creamy and smooth tannins frame the sip, where roasted plum, fig and raisin flavors are framed by a more rigid structure toward the finish. Matt Kettmann

This is a screamingly good deal, offering both hedonistic pleasure and complexity through a blend of 41% Syrah, 35% Petite Sirah, 12% Grenache and 12% Tannat. Aromas of roasted cherry, smoked meat and cola spice lead into a hearty palate of black currant, roasted game and licorice. It’s balanced by bright acidity, making for a sip that will satisfy many. Vina Robles Chardonnay Mistral Vineyard Monterey Ca 2019

Vina Robles Winery

$14.40$18.00

PRODUCT OVERVIEW:What does a Paso Robles winery with a passion for chardonnay do when it wants to craft the very best under-$20 wine from this noble French varietal? It heads north to the Mistral Vineyard in Monterey, where the cooling bay breezes bring forth grapes that strike the perfect balance between ripe fruit and vibrant acidity. Vina Robles’ founder Hans Nef had a lifelong reverence for nature and an appreciation for agriculture that dated back to his childhood in Switzerland. These values informed his business interests, which included the purchase of vast swaths of agricultural land in the southern United States. Fueled by his growing appreciation for fine wine, he put down roots in the Central Coast’s Paso Robles AVA, where he established the Vina Robles winery. To this day, the Vina Robles portfolio of wines honors Nef’s European roots while reflecting the Central Coast’s unique terroirs. The 2019 Vina Robles Chardonnay Mistral Vineyard was fermented in a combination of French oak and stainless steel and aged on the lees for 6 months prior to bottling. It is full-bodied and lushly-textured, with aromas and flavors of lemon curd and Golden Delicious apples. Accents of crème brulée emerge on the creamy mid-palate, and bright, balancing acidity brings it to a long and satisfying finish.PRODUCT DETAILS:

Paso Robles Avas And Sub

The 40+ wineries that existed in 1997 have grown in number to more than 200. It is now no secret that growing conditions in Paso Robles are optimal for producing premium and ultra-premium wines. Major contributing factors include: 1) The Paso Robles AVA lies along Californias Central Coast, only 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean and between two perfectly placed mountain rangesthese natural temperature controls create a Mediterranean-like climate of warm days, cold nights and long growing seasons and 2) The area has a unique predominance of calcareous soils along with high soil pH values that are not typical of other California AVAs.

Furthermore, Paso Robles is incredibly diverse. It is the largest geographic appellation, stretching over 614,000 acres, with 40,000 planted to vineyard. Encompassing rolling plains, river bottoms and rocky mountainous areas, elevations range from 700 to over 2,400 feet. While calcareous soils dominate, this diverse topography presents more than 30 soil series, primarily bedrock derived soils from weathered granite, volcanic and marine sedimentary rocks. Rainfall varies more than 20 inches in the extreme, and the warmest areas accumulate about 20% more heat than the coolest.

These 5 Paso Robles Wines Rank Among Best In The World

Napa Valley wines receive plenty of plaudits. Sonoma County product is firmly established among oenophiles and gets its fair share of praise too. But when five Paso Robles wines rank among the top 26 offerings in the entire world, that’s newsworthy.

Wine Spectatormagazine, one of the most trusted brands in the business, clearly saw something special coming out of the Central Coast wine region this year, naming these five bottles to the upper tiers of its 2017 Top 100 list.

No. 26: 2015 Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas Blanc Paso Robles

To put the above rankings in perspective, this unassuming San Luis Obispo County wine region landed more wines in the top tier than Italy, Spain, and Washington state. France barely edged out Paso Robles with six bottles in the top quarter of the list.

What in the wide world of wine is going on here?

âPaso Robles is one of the most exciting wine regions in California and itâs just getting started,” according to Wine Spectator Senior Editor Tim Fish. “The region caught our eye in 2010 when Saxum won Wine of the Year for its James Berry Vineyard 2007, which earned 98 points in our official blind tastings. The five wines in the 2017 Top 100 are an acknowledgement of Paso Robles and its achievements. More significantly, all five wines are outstanding.”

The #26 wine on the list, Tablas Creek’s 2015 Patelin de Tablas Blanc Paso Robles, is also a Rhone blendâGrenache Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne, and Marsanneâand retails for $25.

This wine delivers loads of Paso Robles richness at a fair price, starting with lush aromas of black cherry, caramel and mocha cream. The palate starts soft and inviting, with more cherry and caramel, then firms up with tighter tannins and penetrating acidity. Matt Kettmann

Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon

As Paso Robles, California has soared in number of wineries and gained in popularity, Cabernet Sauvignon has firmly taken root as the regions number one varietal. Alone, it accounts for just over 40% of plantings and is grown throughout both the western and eastern sides of the appellation. Though viticulture here dates back to the 18th century, Cabernet Sauvignon didnt emerge as a significant grape here until the 1970s. But since then it has definitely made up for lost time.

Legendary winemaker and consultant Andre Tchelistcheff first recognized Pasos potential with Cabernet Sauvignon in the early 1960s. The calcareous soil and dramatic diurnal temperature changes of Pasos westside particularly intrigued him. Today modern winemaking techniques and focused experimentation with various clones, rootstocks and vineyard strategies optimize the region’s ideal combination of soil and climate to deliver the best fruit possible.

The results are evident in the glass. Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon can be mesmerizing, with rich aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, black cherry, graphite, toasty oak, vanilla and spice. The structure, balance and unbridled opulence of these wines impress from first sip to last. Not surprisingly, Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignons have steadily grown in reputation, not just in the U.S., but around the world.

INTUITIVE Food pairing and flavor attributes are the foundation of our approach to the wine shopping experience.

Pour makes it easy and enjoyable. So we display the wines in a way that answers these questions.

VALUE-DRIVEN At Pour, we work hard to find wines that give you the best value for your money. In fact, 80% of our wines are $25 and under. Regardless of our price, all our wines give you exceptional value.
