Dom Perignon Vintage Champagne 2012

A challenging vintage with climatic conditions that included episodes of frost, heavy rainfall and hailstorms, 2012 nevertheless yielded fruit with a perfect balance between freshness, richness and tension. This Dom Perignon offers a complex nose of white flowers, ripe fruit , along with a minty touch, smoky notes and a refined minerality. Bacchanal Wine: Nola’s Underdog Champions

What started as a sleepy little wine shop on the outskirts of New Orleans slowly emerged as an eclectic Bywater watering hole, and then after Katrina became an epic part of the city’s recovery as guest chefs from around the city came and cooked for the crowds on Bacchanal Sundays, NOLA’s original pop-up. This iconic day became immortalized in HBO’s series Treme, and from this day a new business model emerged–a speakeasy that featured great food and music in a backyard party seven nights a week. Unfortunately, Bacchanal did not have the permission or the permits to be an outdoor kitchen and jazz club seven nights a week, and eventually we were raided by the city on a busy Friday night in the Summertime. That raid began an epic year-long struggle to gain the legal rights to our backyard party, and with the help of the people of the Bywater and the support of people around NOLA, we won our day at City Hall.

And What It Means Today

Back in October of 2005, the city of New Orleans re-opened the parish line, allowing a slow trickle of dazed, forlorn residents to return to a modern ruin. Food and supplies were very difficult to obtain. Most of the vehicles on the street were caravans of humvees, and about half of the pedestrians one encountered in public were members of the military carrying machine guns. The days were long, and the nights very, very quiet. The curfew meant that no one was allowed out after dark those who broke curfew risked being jailed in a tent city beneath the interstate. This was the immediate aftermath of the New Orleans levee failures, often referred to as “Hurricane Katrina.”

This was the backdrop for a tiny miracle: a small wine shop opened its doors for the first time.

This was not our shop. But, this is the beginning of our story.

The little shop only needed one employee. My name is Catherine, aka Cat, and I was that employee. I qualified for three reasons: first, I had a few years of New Orleans fine dining under my belt. Second, I lived just around the corner. Third, there was no one else around.

During the year that followed, I learned a lot about wine: I learned the basics of how it’s made, I learned about the places it comes from and why. I met many people who make it. I learned the names and qualities of hundreds of varietals, and why some work better in one place than another. All of this was interesting and eye-opening.

Swirl Wine Bar & Market

This super wine shop in Faubourg St. John specializes in amazing wines in the $12-$30 range, with a loving emphasis on Italian vintages. Small plates from the delightful 1000 Figs next door are available to accompany your wine selection, best enjoyed at a sidewalk table, great for people-watching. Swirl even plays Saints games, no sports bar required.

The Independent Caveau is as cool as a wine bar gets, a storage unit-like building off the beaten path in Mid City. Husband and wife team Jim Yonkus and Joanne Close handpick a wide-ranging selection of old world and cutting edge winemakers, offering a collection so vast it requires an old-school library ladder to access. The pairs use of wallpaper and color helps close in the high ceilings, creating a cozy nook for a bar at the end of the space where customers can enjoy a bottle and specialty meats and cheeses.

What Our Friends Say

New Orleans Wine and Food Experience: Royal Street Stroll

Solid beer selection. Knowledgeable staff. Nice place to fill a growler and grab a bottle. Then high five Felipe’s across the parking lot.-Skip

Great place to buy spirits, and the great people who work there are knowledgeable about the different spirits that they sell, and they have an awesome selection. The only drawback is they’re off the beaten path, so it’s not the easiest place to find, but once you do, you’ll be back just as I have been.

-Derrick

Everybody here was extremely helpful and friendly. I had lots of questions about kegs and how they work. They were able to answer all of my questions.

-Sally

I love Elio’s. These guys do exceptional barrel picks and have a very wide selection of whiskey and rum, not to mention all the craft beer, more than I know what to do with. Always give great recommendations too. Absolutely worth a stop here if you’re close to Tulane.

-Zach

Very helpful in matching wines to occasions and menus. They dont try to oversell, and have offered comparable less expensive wines as options. The staff is very friendly.
