Does The Pope Drink Alcohol

There are no prohibitions on the Popes consumption of alcohol, and most Popes have treated themselves to a drink, at least on occasion. Pope Paul VI liked to relax with a highball , while Pope Benedict XVI, in true German style, favored beer, which he has continued to enjoy in his retirement.

12% alcohol by volume. Deep, dark red in color, sweet and aged for smoothness in 50 year-old redwood casks. A well-made Port wine from old Cucamonga-Guasti vines. 18% alcohol by volume.

What Is Wine Used In Catholic Masses For Communion

When Christians of Protestant denominations attend a Catholic Mass, they are often surprised that Catholics only receive the consecrated Host , even when the consecrated wine is consumed during the Holy Communion portion of the mass. In Protestant Christian churches, it is standard practice for the congregation to receive both wafer and wine as symbols of the holy blood and body of Christ.

The Cup Of Salvation: Where Does Altar Wine Come From

Producers of sacramental altar wines are a select group.

When at the request of his Mother Mary, Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding at Cana, it was the finest of all wines. And it was the purest wine of all when, at the Last Supper, he took a cup saying, Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins . The wine had to be the purest from the vine because earlier Our Lord also said, For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink .

Naturally, the wine that will become the true Blood of Christ at the consecration during Mass must also be of the purest, highest quality.

To meet the necessary standards, producers of sacramental altar wines are a select group. Two such producers are William Ouweleen of O-Neh-Da Vineyards in Conesus, New York, in the states Finger Lakes region, and Ben Cribari of Cribari Vineyards in Fresno, California, located in the states Central Valley wine region.

When John Paul II celebrated Mass at World Youth Day in Toronto in 2002, the altar wine was from Cribari Vineyards. When Pope Francis celebrated Mass in New York City in 2015, Cardinal Dolan insisted on using only O-Neh-Da wines for the Popes visit, vintner Ouweleen told the Register.

I grow the soil, the soil grows the vine, the vine produces the grapes, and when I harvest the grape and squeeze it, the Good Lord makes the wine, he explained. It is natural.

Police Seize Large Volume Of Illegal Communion Wine In Quebec

Cribari Cellars Marsala 750ml

Police in the Canadian province of Quebec have seized large quantities of communion wine from suppliers, claiming it had violated import laws.

Sacramental wine is in short supply in parts of Canada. As reported by the Catholic News Service, it is now nearly impossible to buy a bottle in Quebec. Seizures from ecclesiastical goods suppliers have been taking place throughout this month.

Sandra Dion, spokesperson for the Quebec City Police Department, told the Catholic News Service that the wine was taken following an investigation.

The warrants state that producers are not permitted to import wines from other provinces, nor sell them across borders. However, suppliers told Catholic News that this has been an established practice for many years owing to the fact the liquor board, Société des alcools du Québec , does not sell communion wine.

Altar wine sold in Quebec is produced by two California wine producers Mont La Salle Altar Wines and Cribari Premium Altar Wines which is imported to the provinces of Ontario or New Brunswick before being sent to Quebec. There is currently no local supplier of communion wine, however the Catholic Register reported earlier this year that a wine from the Vignoble Vertefeuille vineyard in La Prairie was awaiting approval.

My main warehouse is in New Brunswick. My altar wine is imported into New Brunswick. We pay excise taxes. We have a license, we do it legally, transparently, he added.

What Is The Importance Of Wine

Research suggests that drinking an occasional glass of red wine is good for you. It provides antioxidants, may promote longevity, and can help protect against heart disease and harmful inflammation, among other benefits. Interestingly, red wine likely has higher levels of antioxidants than white wine.

On Wine: Altar And Consumer Wines Are Different

As we continue our look at altar wines, general notes.

* Sacramental wine is different from consumer wine. Different labeling. Different licensing for makers. Different federal and state taxes. That is why wine shops and liquor stores cannot carry the product, and why altar wine is not sold to the public even by makers.

The general public can buy wine made to altar wine standards ? natural wine made only from grapes, with no additional ingredients ? but those will be labeled and taxed as a general consumer product. Typically, label on such wine will read something like: “Approved for altar use.”

* High alcohol is not required of altar wine. This misconception flows from the popularity of Angelica-style wine, the best-selling altar wine in the U.S.

Angelica, made by both Mont La Salle and Cribari, is 18 percent alcohol, the highest permitted by Catholic canon law. Angelica is popular because it tastes fruity and sweet, and because high alcohol is a preservative, an important consideration for churches that buy their wine supply only once or twice a year.

High alcohol also serves as a sanitizer. Studies show very little transmission of sickness via the shared communion cup.

* All types and colors of wine are used on the altar, from dark red wines such as Mont La Salle Concord, to reddish-pink wines such as Rosato , to pale white such as Cribari Chablis. These examples, by the way, are all 12 percent alcohol, not 18.

What Is Catholic Wine

Catholic wines can be fortified but the fortification must be derived from grapes only. The wines come in all varieties. The priest or church staff usually decide on which wines they prefer to serve. Some churches just go down to the store and buy wine, most buy from specific providers that use correctly processed wines.

The Slowly Changing World Of Sacramental Wine

  • Print

When the priest offers the chalice at Communion, chances are the wine inside is not a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon but a sweet blended wine, fortified with brandy, from the San Joaquin Valley.

Sacramental wine, which has been part of religious ceremonies for centuries, has changed very little over time. And Napa Valley Specialty Wines, the national leader in sales of altar wine, says trends in this tiny and nearly invisible segment of the wine business move as slowly as the wines do.

Napa Valley Specialty Wines distributes about 65,000 cases of Mount LaSalle Altar Wine nationally, an 8% increase over 1990. Youve probably never seen a bottle, though, since it is sold almost exclusively at church goods stores. All Mount LaSalle wines are sealed with screw caps, and most are sweet.

Next week, however, Napa Valley Specialty Wines will release a small amount of 1992 Mount LaSalle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and a 1992 Sonoma County Chardonnay. The bottles have corks. And the wines are dry.

We think these wines will serve the domestic needs of priests and other clergy, says Napa Valley Specialty president Jim Cox. As the clergy gets younger, the older tastes for sweeter wines may fade, and we want to have a dry wine for them.

Still, Cox holds little hope this move toward dry wine will invade the church: Sacramental wine is an amazingly conservative business, he says. It changes very little.
