When you think of Arizona, you think of dry lands, cactus and the Cardinals’ continuous losing record and not wine. But believe it or not, the state has been producing wine since the 16th century, and if you tried some, you’d probably love it.
If you are a fan of the rock band, Tool, or its head honcho Maynard James Keenan, you probably already know about the wines being produced by Caduceus Cellars. And if you don’t, well, here is your chance to learn.
As owner of Caduceus Cellars, as well as Merkin Vineyards in Arizona, Keenan is known for some pretty powerful and tannic wines in the likes of Judith, Airavata and Anubis. Keenan is also a partner with Stronghold Vineyards so you might say Keenan is holding down the fort in Arizona.
Both Caduceus and Merkin don’t see a lot of distribution here in North Carolina, if you see it in a bottle shop, it’s probably thanks to 17th Street Distributing out of Concord. So when our friends at Wine & Beer 101-Wake Forest posted on Facebook its “The Great Wines of Arizona,” we knew we had to attend.
Wine & Beer’s Rufus Hoffman told the intimate crowd of around 18 people that this event is just one of many he plans for the future a day to “try to find some unique stuff,” he said. After a brief introduction on Arizona wines, he handed it over to the representative from 17th Street Distributing.

Caduceus Cellars is an underground 3000 Sq Ft. bunker buried into slopes of Jerome, AZ. Here winemaker, Maynard J. Keenan produces 6,000 cases of Italian and Spanish wines from 120 acres on elevations ranging from 4,000 to 5,000 feet. The epitome of a boutique owner owned and operated winery.
Caduceus Cellars currently has five different blocks in northern Arizona. 4900ft, the Judiths Block on Cleopatra Hill, Jerome, AZ, is a combination of limestone, volcanic, and sedimentary rock. 3500 ft, The Marzo Block and at 3300 ft, The Agostina block are covered with fine river sediment over a bed of calcareous substrate. The Elephante block, in Cornville, AZ, has a minimum of five different soils/terrain profiles all on a 28 acre site. The Southwest Wine Center, Yavapai College Block is nestled in the alluvial foothills of Mingus Mountain. All this is peppered with volcanic magic dust. The main fruit source for Merkin Vineyards is the historic 70 acre Buhl Memorial Vineyard, in the Kansas Settlement of Willcox, Arizona.

How The Wines Were Judged
Judging for the wine contest was held at Mountain Shadows resort in Paradise Valley on Nov. 2. The contest, which has been put on by The Republic at the request of the Arizona Wine Growers Association since 2010, attracted 232 entries from 27 wineries.
Judging was done by 19 sommeliers, restaurant owners and wine professionals.
The tasting was designed to comport with guidance to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

A primary purpose of Keenans lyrics for Tool involves a desire to connect with the listeners on a personal level, encouraging them to look within themselves for self-identity, understanding and reflection. Tool did not include lyrics with any releases until Fear Inoculum, as Keenan believes most people dont get it and it is not a priority of the band that people do. However, after each release Keenan has eventually published his typed lyrics online via the semi-official fansite, with the exception of , which was published on the official Tool website. Despite Maynards aversion to promoting the lyrical content of Tools work to its audience, lyrical arrangements are often given special attention, such as in the lyrics to Lateralus, wherein the number of syllables per line correspond to an arrangement of the , and Jambi, in which the metrical foot is used. Via VegNews :Keenan told VegNews that none of his wines contain animal products and instead go through a natural filtration process in which wine is poured over the top of fermenting grapes, then filtered through paper to collect sediment.
Company email :Our vineyard practices are sustainable and organic, although we are not certified and our wines are in fact vegan.
Company email :I cannot assure you our wines are vegan. It depends on too many factors, which type of wine, which barrel it was fermented in, etc etc. Mike is correct in that we do on occasion use egg whites to fine some of our wines. I cannot give you a list of which wines are vegan nor guarantee any of our wines are vegan.
Email from Heather :I spoke with Thomas, the Assistant Manager, and Mike, the store manager. I did a wine tasting there and sampled every wine they have! I asked both gentlemen if the wine was processed vegan-ly, and they did not have a firm answer. Mike, the store manager, said, I know that they use egg whites as part of the process. They did not have any more details, nor did they have a suggestion for how to find out for certain.

Winemaking And Other Endeavors
In addition to a in Keenan, whose grandparents and great-uncle in , owns Merkin Vineyards and , based in the unincorporated area of Page Springs/Cornville, Arizona, southwest of , where he resides. While the winery is named after an ancient symbol for commerce , the vineyard is named after a pubic wig . He is also a partner of Stronghold Vineyards, an 80-acre site dedicated to producing affordable wines in the state, located in the small, unincorporated area known as Kansas Settlement in Sulfur Springs Valley, Arizona.
Keenans mother died in 2003, at the age of 59, due to complications from an aneurysm. Following her death, he scattered her ashes across one of his vineyards, and later named one of his wines after her, honoring her memory with his Nagual del Judith. Keenan released a statement in April 2009:
I am standing on a metaphorical plateau. The view from here suggests that I/we still have many mountains to negotiate. It has already been a long journey. But the successes and failures have been in balance. Which would suggest that I/we have chosen the correct path. I hold in my hands the evidence to support this statement. With tears in my eyes, I present to you the very first 100 percent Arizona Caduceus wine. Nagual del Judith, named after my late mother, Judith Marie.
