An Under Stairs Wine Cellar Joins A Historic Home

Under The Stairs Wine Cellar | Use Wasted Space In Your Home

We recently completed this under the stairs wine cellar for a client in Oregon with a beautiful, historic farmhouse that dates back to 1900. It was extremely important to the owners that all the finishes and materials matched the rest of the house and didnt interrupt the historic feel.

We met this challenge by very carefully matching woods, trims, and hardware to the existing finishes of the home. The stained cherry wood for the racking system is new, but it looks identical to the banisters and stairs, and the hardware and hinges for the doors of the wine cellar mirror existing details in the home.

Since the staircase is placed in the middle of a large room, the wine cellar is now a gorgeous focal point of the home.

Carefully designed details, like this tiny, backlit display shelf give the cellar a one-of-a-kind feel thats as special as the home itself.

Wine Cellar Construction Under The Stairs

The space was simply an open staircase with a sloping ceiling located in the main living area. It is 4 feet deep and 12.5 feet long. The client wanted to enclose the bottom of the stairs. What we did was to build a front wall to enclose the space that will store the owners prized wines.

We incorporated various bottle orientations in the custom racking design and installed an efficient wine cellar climate control system to stabilize the storage conditions. The door and lighting were chosen and installed carefully.

Basement Wine Cellar With Storage Closet

If you dont want to convert your entire basement into a wine cellar but still want to use the cold, dark nature of a basement for storing wine, consider this idea. The area under the stairs is dedicated to storing wine while the rest of the space can be used for seating, entertaining, and of course, wine tasting. This idea is budget-friendly, but still looks elegant and does the job of keeping your wine stored properly.

Installing A Wine Cooler Under The Stairs

There is one small problem that comes with installing a wine rack under your stairs you dont have as much control over the temperature as you would with other options.

Of course, we have the solution to the problem in the form of wine coolers.

Wine coolers are designed specifically for storing wine bottles at cool temperatures.

These wine coolers come in all shapes and sizes. They have different features depending on your needs so you can find the best model for your needs.

We are sure that you can find the best wine cooler for you in our collection.

There are some differences between a standard refrigerator and a dedicated wine cooler.

Thats why you need to invest in a proper cooler. For a start, the shelves in wine coolers are different from your standard fridge shelves.

The shelves are designed for holding and storing wine bottles specifically.

You should have no problem taking bottles out or putting new bottles in without having to move other bottles around.

The shelves keep the bottles firmly in place. One problem with storing bottles in a refrigerator is that they can move about.

Thats not an issue with a wine cooler. Another benefit of choosing a dedicated wine cooler is that they have two-zone temperature control.

This is an interesting feature that lets you choose two different temperatures for the cooler.

You have one temperature in the top half and another at the bottom half.

Anoverview Of The Contemporary Glass Wine Room

This wine cellar is the perfect addition to this home and looks gorgeous under the stairs.

Steve Pantalemon, of the Custom Wine Cellars Phoenix, designed and built this under-the-stairs glass wine room. The client wanted to build a wine cellar in a small area inside his home, and Steve and his crew didnt disappoint. They successfully used premium materials and industrial-grade components to build the modern wine cellar they were hoping for. They created an exquisite wine room from the limited area they had to work with under a central stairway.

One unique aspect of this cellar is how easy it is to see inside. On the front, there is a large glass wall and wine cellar door with an easy view from the main living area. In addition, there are also two windows built into the walls that show horizontal wooden racking. The glass is a ¾ inch tempered, frameless glass panel. To add more grandeur to the wine cellar, the flooring was made from salvaged reclaimed wine barrels. The wine racking inside is a combination of cork-forward style racking, along with the diamond-shaped X bins, the reveal row, and label forward racks in the windows. Reveal rows were added with white LED lighting for emphasis. And the rest are diamond racks on the lower portions of the wine room. Lastly, a WhisperKOOL wall mount cooling unit was installed. After a heat load calculation, it was determined that this was the perfect unit to regulate the temperature inside a wine cellar of this size.

The Project Is Said To Cost $5900 And Can Actually Be Used To Store A Number Of Things Other Than Alcohol

Now, a set of wine cellar stairs wont come cheap as its said to cost $5,900. However, building an actual wine cellar would be a much more expensive project, and would be more oriented towards producers of wine, while amateurs and aficionados now have an ideal solution to an otherwise expensive project.

The stairs on their own constructed from Australian Mountain ash and installed cost $3,100, elaborated Murray. The Goliath heavy duty draw slides, 6×1000mm, 2×900mm, 2×700mm, and 2×500mm cost around $500, plus the ply, handles, and timber components for the draws and the structure underneath, plus the time to construct and install it all, put another $2,800 on top of the cost of the stairs. A total of $5,900 .

It wasnt long until the photos caught the attention of a number of wine lover and DIY groups on Facebook, including the Bunnings Mums Australia Facebook group, which has over 115,000 members.

People found this idea to be simply genius, praising the good use of dead space around the house. Some joked that they now need to somehow get $5,000 and try to make a design with more drawers installed.

We asked Murray about any future projects in the vein of wine cellar stairs, and he joked about how he probably wont ever need any other projects: By the looks of this going viral, I might be building these for the rest of my life.

The client wanted to build a modern wine cellar under her stairs. She wanted to maximize the bottle count in her wine cellar while also prioritizing the aesthetic aspect of the build. In terms of aesthetics, the first element that youll see in a wine cellar is its doors. To match the desired style and look, the Coastal team installed glass doors for this wine room. The team used 1/2 inch frameless tempered glass panels for the door. Additionally, they utilized a pivot hinge instead of an ordinary hinge. The pivot hinge is self-closing and has better sealing power than other hinges. This wine cellar door looks great and works efficiently.

How The Team Made Cooling Inside The Wine Cellar Efficient

After the team was done running the lightest and the copper lines for the cooling unit. They then installed a 3 ½ inch spray foam application. This application retards the formation of water droplets within the cavity of the wine cellar wall. Water droplets inside the walls can disturb the humidity in the wine cellar, which would cause molds to proliferate. Molds in your wine cellar will compromise the quality of your wines.

The team also installed additional seals for the wine cellar door. These additional seals, plus the sealing ability of the pivot hinge, ensure the wine cellar is sealed from the fluctuating temperature and humidity outside.

Placing the major parts of the cooling into the soffit and outside of the wine cellar also played a significant role in helping maintain the optimum temperature and humidity in the wine room. With the main motor moved away from the wine cellar, the heat released from the motor is avoided inside the wine cellar.

Brilliant Wine Storage Solution For A Tiny Space

Front View of Under Stairs Vancouver Custom Wine Cellar Built

When planning to start a wine room installation project, one of the dilemmas faced by most homeowners is finding a suitable place for their wine collection. Nowadays, wine cellars can be built in almost any area of your home including a walk-in closet, garage, basement, and even beneath your stairs!

The small size and odd shape of the room should not be a concern if you work with a professional wine cellar company.

Recently, a client sought the help of Blue Grouse Wine Cellars, to create a design for his wine room that would store and display his wine safely and attractively.

Configuration Of The Metal Wine Racking In The Wine Cellar Built Under The Stairs

Pin on Wine Storage

The majority of the metal wine racking system is made up of horizontal racks. These racks are 3-bottles deep. You could choose to have up to 4-bottles-deep or 5-bottles-deep in this type of wine racking. But 3-bottles deep is the sweet spot for this wine cellar. The 3-bottle deep racking can already hold a good number of wine bottles. Going beyond that would be too cumbersome for the client to get the innermost bottle.

Sandwiched between the horizontal racks are the vertical reveal rows. Theres a channel of LED strip lighting for this metallic wine racking system section. The LED lighting emphasizes the Reveal racks and the labels of the wine bottles stored there. With this supplemental lighting, the beautiful wine bottle labels pop and look amazing. LED lighting is a very efficient and effective way to light and add mood to a modern wine cellar.

At the bottom of the wine racking system is an area for storing cases. And at the center of this wine cellar, built under the stairs, is a small area with white acrylic LED back panel. From here, the client can decant his wines or display extra wine or alcohol bottles. At each end of the wine cellar is a small square shelf with white acrylic LED panels underneath. The client can store large format bottles like magnums here. Lastly, the Coastal team built an area for storing more cases and bottles directly below the stairs.
