What Should I Consider Before Removing A Wine Bottle Label

How to Remove Wine Bottle Labels : Wine Topics

First, remember to keep the bottle you want to remove the label from! Far too often, a wine bottle disappears from the table or from the party before one thinks to save the label. Once the bottle disappears, the only option remaining is to send a self-addressed stamped envelope to the winery or restaurant and ask if they have an extra label from that vintage. Explain that you did not keep your bottle and that you want the label for your wine journal.

Next, determine if you are able to take the bottle home with you or if you must remove the label there at the event. Not being able to take the wine bottle home will significantly reduce your options for removing a wine label. Your only options then are the Lift-Off Method and the kindly ask your server or sommelier if they can remove the label for you approach!

Once you have the bottle home, youll need to assess the label and the associated adhesive. Determining which item you wish to keep – the label or the bottle – will dictate the method of removal you use.

Whats Not On The Label

Producers may tellyou if egg or dairy products have been used for fining the wine, to make themclearer and brighter. But they dont have to say anything.

Similarly, they dont have to say anything about theirfarming methods. If a wine is labelled as organic or biodynamic, then it mustmeet those requirements, but cheap plonk is often the result of very intensivefarming methods. In particular, we worry about overproduction in Prosecco.

There is no requirement to tell you anything about the otheringredients in the wine for example the purple dye or oak chips that somelow-cost producers use. What yeast was used in the fermentation? Nor is thereany requirement to tell you anything about how the wine was made. Was itfermented in a concrete tank from 1970s or an expensive new French oak barrel? You may never know.

The Appellation Of Origin

On wine bottle labels from the big European wine countries such as Italy, France, Spain, or Germany, you will often find an appellation of origin. This appellation tells you where a wine comes from. Besides, its also a quality indicator because these appellations are heavily regulated by law. Only vintners that fulfill specific criteria regarding the production process, the ingredients, and the wine quality may put it on their bottles. Local and national authorities control the compliances with these rules and test the wines quality regularly.

Across Europe, you will find thousands of controlled appellations. In France, for instance, there are more than 450. But there is also a growing number of protected appellations in the United States. However, the American regulations in terms of production and ingredients are less strict than in European wine countries.

As its almost impossible to keep all appellations in mind, vintners typically put an additional term or an abbreviation next to the region name that indicates that the region is a controlled appellation. They vary from country to country, but their purpose is the same. Here are some of them:

  • France: Appellation dOrigine Contrôlée
  • Italy: Denominazione di Origine Controllata
  • Portugal: Denominação de Origem Controlada
  • Spain: Denominación de Origen
  • Germany: Qualitätswein bestimmter Anbaugebiete
  • United States: American Viticultural Area
  • Prodotto in Italia
  • Produit de France
  • Producto de España

Appellation Credential

Appellation credentials are awarded to regional producers following strict rules governing which grapes are allowed, crop yield, alcohol percentage and quality level. The specific requirements for regions are determined by the country of origin.

There are 2 main styles of wine labels commonly found in the stores. A wine identified by its brand name or a wine designated by its appellation credentials. A wine that is labeled by its brand will indicate what grapes its made of on the front label . A wine that is identified by its appellation credentials relies on the appellations quality level rules and regulations to indicate whats in the bottle. A perfect example of an appellation wine is Chablis: Nowhere on a Chablis label is a mention of chardonnay as the grape, nor that Chablis is typically an unoaked chardonnay.

Understanding a wine label may not always tell you how the wine tastes but it can help you get a better picture of exactly what you are buying.

Before you apply a custom label to your wine bottle, make sure that the bottle is completely clean, dry, free of residue, and at room temperature. Once your bottle is ready, follow the steps below to apply your label:

  • To remove your custom wine label from the backing paper, peel back the BACKING at a tight angle in one corner. This should cause the corner to lift up, allowing the label to be slowly peeled off without damage.
  • Lay the bottle down on a firm surface that will prevent the bottle from rolling, such as on your lap, or on an egg carton.
  • Center the label over the bottle. Using the seam of the bottle as a guide can help with this.
  • Place the center of the label onto the bottle first, using firm pressure to smooth it down evenly from the center out.
  • Once the label is applied, leave the bottle at room temperature for 24 hours to allow the adhesive to set.

Best Method Of Getting A Wine Label Off A Wine Bottle

In the “old days” wine labels used to soak off in warm water, presumably because they used plain paper and a water-based glue. Nowadays 99.34% of labels are of the self-adhesive variety, laser-cut with embossings, metallic and plastic finishings and coatings and seemed to be designed to military specifications NOT to be removed.

I am a home-brewer and need a supply of clean re-usable wine bottles, and removing these modern labels is a chore.

I have tried the following but I may have missed some good ideas:

  • soaking in water… this sometimes sort of works – it seems to depend on the quality of the paper versus the power of the glue. Fails often on coated labels. Resort to scraping with a potato peeler. If that fails bin it. ~ 5% chance of success

  • VERY carefully pick up a corner and peel it off by hand. When it rips, try a different corner. Again this depends on the paper quality vs glue and seems to critically depend on the angle of peel. Good approach for coated labels. Often you can succeed in doing this on the front label then fail totally on the 2 back labels which have an entirely different constituency. ~ 5% chance again

  • heat bottle in slow oven oven at ~100C. use gloves and try and peel label with other hand. Some skill/risk required ~ 40% chance

  • Ok what methods have I missed? and what are the estimated chances of success?

Good Wine Label Qualities To Look For

Here are seven things that you should look for on a wine label.

The basics are clear. Grape variety, vintage, AVA/appellation and alcohol content are required by law. Be sure they are easily found.

Defined terms. If you use unregulated words and phrases like reserve, barrel selection or old vine, the label should explain exactly what it means and why it matters.

Technical information. A good back label design can hold a lot of valuable information on the grape, blend, fermentation practices, cellaring and chemistry of a wine. Feed the geeks who love data!

Green certification. Clearly displayed icons for green farming and eco-friendly packaging can be a great benefit. Its even better if the label, or the winerys website, explain what those icons mean.

Vineyard sources. Producers shouldnt hide behind the notion that vineyard information is proprietary. Unless a winery is making vast quantities of wine from dozens of growers, stating the vineyard the grapes came from can be a fantastic tool for wine lovers looking to learn more.

The winemaker. Winemakers are the celebrities in this business, just like chefs in the restaurant world. Name your winemaker and any valuable information like their previous training or experience.

You can see one common difference between New World and most Old World wine labels here: They prominently name the varietal, Chardonnay. In contrast, the appellation of origin is printed in rather small letters below the grapes name.

The vintage 2018 also has an unobtrusive spot in the top right corner of the label.

Assign Rows By Wine Type: Red White Or Sparkling

Depending on the magnitude of your wine collection, assigning locations by row of each bottle can be instructive and fun. You might discover a few hidden treasures, including wines you forgot you had and might need drinking right away.

Separating the wines into categories not only makes life easier when locating a wine, but it can also alert you to when your volume of a particular wine type is getting low. Ive found a direct correlation between a low inventory of St. Francis Wineries Zinfandel and my wifes happiness with me.

    Why Remove Wine Bottle Labels

A bottle of wine may hold memories of a celebration or an unforgettable experience, so some people remove the wine labels to include them in theircollection, journal, or scrapbook. On the other hand, private-label winemakers take out wine bottle labels to replace the original with the one they made.

Meanwhile, crafters and artisans remove wine labels to re-use the label or the bottle for their arts and crafts. Examples of these projects are framed wine labels, wine bottle lights, wine tile coasters, and wine bottle glassware.

Wines like this are aimed at an audience that may love the wine, or the brand, but is not curious about its origin and production.

How to remove and apply personalized wine bottle labels DIY
  • Place the bottle on a surface that will prevent it from rolling, with the top of the bottle pointing at 12 oclock away from your body. We recommend using your lap, with your knees holding the bottle securely.
  • Gently flex the label until a seam on the back of the label opens. Next peel away one strip of the protective backing.
  • Grasp the label tightly on both sides and align the label horizontal with the bottle.
  • Press the label on the bottle on the end where you removed the paper backing making sure the label is straight. Once its straight peel away the remainder of the protective backing and smooth the label from the center out to both sides.
  • Check for any air bubbles and smooth them out gently toward the label edges using the pads of your finger tips not your fingernails.

How To Design A Wine Label: The Ultimate Guide

Think about the last time you went shopping for a bottle of wine: maybe it was for a friend or to bring as gift to someone hosting a dinner party or get-together. What guided your eye through the expansive number of brands now readily available at any local grocery store? Like the other millions of people that have grown the wine industry to a $60 billion industry, you probably checked through some simple and quick mental decisions: red or white, domestically grown or imported and price point. Even after that, youre probably left holding three or four bottles. Its impossible to deny that there is a small thing that can make or break the purchase for many people: the label.

Especially when buying a bottle that will eventually be a gift, its undeniable that consumers shop with their eyes. Need proof? Last year, Wine.net surveyed 2,000 wine drinkers asking them to choose between three bottles of red wine and three bottles of white wine with only a picture of each bottle to guide them. 80% said their decision was based mostly on the label!

If youre an independent wine maker, you need to be sure your bottles stack up against the competition.

Why Remove The Label From A Wine Bottle

Wine enthusiasts and scrapbookers may want to remove a wine label to save it in a wine journal or scrapbook. Private-label winemakers remove labels for the purpose of re-use – they remove commercial labels from the bottle before adhering to their own. Last, artisans and crafters often use wine bottles or wine labels for crafts such as wine bottle glassware , wine tile coasters , or framed wine labels as wall or desk art .

How Do I Decide The Method Of Label Removal For A Particular Bottle

Pin by Caterina Varoni on wedding ideas!

What is the label constructed of? If the label is plastic it will be less permeable to water. If it is plastic, then removal will often require heat or physical means regardless if you are trying to save the label or just the bottle.

If the label is paper, then it is more permeable to liquids and a different removal method may be needed depending on if you are trying to save the label or the bottle.

Labels adhere to wine and beer bottles through a variety of adhesive polymers. These include pressure-sensitive adhesives and water-based glues. Since many of us are not adhesive experts, we will be assessing the label using visual assessment to guess the composition of the glue and to select the label removal method with the highest likelihood of success.

To assess the adhesive construction, take a razor or knife and lift a corner about ¼ inch. If the adhesive looks like traditional glue, the use of a detergent and water-based method can be considered. If the adhesive looks more sticker-like in consistency, then heat or physical means will be your best bet.
