Should You Serve Your Wine at Room Temperature?

The season of the year makes a big difference to your wine drinking experience. In the hot summer months, a bottle of wine will turn into warm wine much more quickly. For example, the extreme heat of more than 100 Fahrenheit makes it more challenging to achieve the ideal wine temperature.

In these hot conditions, there are a few things you can do. Wine lovers might decide to use a wine thermometer to precisely measure wine temperature. If you mainly drink inexpensive wines, using a wine thermometer is not worth the effort. Instead, using a wine bucket is a better choice. Fill the bucket with ice water. The combination of water and ice an ice bath in essence keeps the wine immersed in colder temperatures for a longer period.In the winter months, it is much easier to have a chilled bottle. Put the bottle in your kitchen fridge for about 20-25 minutes, and you will have cool wine to serve. In the winter, there is less concern about the wine heating up too quickly. Therefore, you can skip the bucket of ice water.

What Is Optimum Drinking Temperature

It is quite normal for the majority of people to serve their wine without really thinking about the temperature of it. The red is served straight from the shelf or storage area at room temperature, and the white is served completely cold straight from the fridge. However, just as you wouldn’t enjoy a lukewarm cup of tea compared to a hot one, it is a lot more enjoyable to drink wine at the optimum temperature. While it is true that red wine should be served at a warmer temperature than white wine, there isn’t really any truth to the notion of serving it at room temperature. And although white wine is delicious when it is chilled, it shouldn’t be consumed too cold.

The general rule that most of us follow when it comes to drinking wine is that white and rosé wines should be served chilled and red wines should be served at room temperature. To get those white and rosé wines chilled, many of us put them in our regular refrigerators and let them chill for hours, days, or even longer. But is that a good idea?

There is an adage about wine serving temperatures that white wines should be served chilled and red wines should always be served at room temperature. This basic tenet seems to make sense but isn’t necessarily true. The temperature at which you serve your wine significantly affects its flavors and aromas.

How Should I Serve Chardonnay

Is Chardonnay Sweet or Dry? Should It Be Served Chilled?

Like all whites, Chardonnay should be served chilled. If the wine is too warm, the alcohol tastes hot while the flavors are muddled. Too cold, and the aromas and flavors are muted. The best temperature range is 5055°F, which can be achieved by two hours in the refrigerator or 3040 minutes in an ice-water bath. If you dont finish a bottle of Chardonnay, replace the cork and stick it back in the fridge. The flavors will stay fresh for 24 days. Beyond that, the wine will start to oxidize. At that point, its best used for cooking.

Whats The Deal With Room Temperature

Lots of people use the concept of Room Temperature as their guide to serving reds. If you are too chances are your reds are too warm.

The term room temperature has been around for centuries, and it refers to drafty old English castles that maintained a brisk 55-60° F in the dead of summer, NOT your well-insulated modern home, which is usually around 73° F.

Other Tips For Keeping Wine In The Refrigerator

  • Always keep unopened wine with a natural cork lying down in the refrigerator. “The number one thing with storing wine is you always want the wine to be in contact with the cork,” said Morey. This keeps the cork moist and prevents it from shrinking, which could allow bacteria to enter.
  • Keep unopened wine away from where the motor is in the refrigerator. That’s where the most vibrations happen, and wine does not like vibrations. That also means keeping it out of the door, where the temperature fluctuates. Put it near the back or in the crisper where temperature is better regulated.
  • When closing a bottle of open wine before putting it in the refrigerator , seal it as tightly as possible by putting the cork back in or using a wine stopper that fits really well. Morey even recommended a wine condom, which is exactly what it sounds likea plastic cover that looks like a condom and rolls over the top of a wine bottle to form a tight, virtually spill-free seal.

Are There Varying Preferences For Serving Temperature

Of course! Preferences vary for what temperature to serve any wine at. When I drink full-bodied white wines I like to let their temperature come up closer to 55°F. I also personally love to drink wine outdoors. My favorite place to drink wine is in my canoe. In that situation, I end up drinking my Merlot closer to 64°F if not a few degrees over.

Creating The Right Temperature

The problem with serving a red wine above 65 degrees is that as the wine gets warmer, all the wine’s imperfections are more apparent. If possible, keep the red wine in the cellar until just before serving or pop it in the refrigerator of 15-20 minutes before serving. This is important in restaurants, too. Put your hand on the bottle and “take its temperature” when you are presented with a bottle. It should feel slightly cool, but not cold. If not, ask your server to put it in an ice bucket for 10 to 15 minutes. It is very common for restaurants to serve their red wine at a temperature that is too warm it occurs frequently. This usually occurs when the wine is stored near a hot restaurant kitchen.

If you spend less than $1,000 per year on wine, skip to the next section.

Beginner wine collectors who have less than 50 bottles of wine should buy a wine fridge. If you have a larger wine collection and additional money to spend on your wine hobby, building a wine cellar might make sense.

Aside from budget and wine collection size, building a wine cellar only makes sense if you plan to collect and age wines. Suppose you buy affordable wines and drink each bottle within a few weeks , a wine cellar does not make sense for your situation.

There are two ways to approach a wine cellar: rent space in a commercial wine cellar or build one in your home. Before even considering a wine cellar in your home, you need to know about the costs.

Renting space in a commercial wine cellar or storage company is a far better option. According to wine expert Jancis Robinson, the cost of wine storage varies depending on the volume of wine you store. Abbey Winery Services, based in Oregon, charges a minimum monthly fee of $20 per month, while Chelsea Wine Storage, located in Manhattan, costs much more . Still, they offer more to customers, such as a tasting room and easy access for New Yorkers. Note that some commercial wine storage services include insurance and delivery. Commercial wine storage makes sense if you plan to collect wine as a potential investment.

Best Temperatures For Red Wine

Once upon a time, the prevailing wisdom was that red wine was best served at room temperature. But the truth is that it’s better when served a bit cooler than that. Red wine that is served too warm tastes flabby and too alcoholish.

In general, the ideal temperature for full-bodied reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec is between 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s the same for fortified wines such as Port,,and Madeira. Lighter-bodied reds such as Pinot Noir, Gamay, and Grenache are better served a little cooler than that at 55 degrees.
