Meiomi Exists Thanks To Grandmother Glos

Meiomi was born from Belle Glos, a single-vineyard Pinot Noir label owned by Wagner and named for his grandmother, Lorna Belle Glos. Wagner was so impressed with the quality of the wine that he sought to expand the familys Pinot Noir offerings, and Meiomi was born. Today, Belle Glos Clark and Telephone Pinot Noir retails for $50 a bottle and rakes in top rankings.

Fruit for this wine was sourced from vineyards in Sonoma, Monterey and Santa Barbara for this 100% Pinot Noir blend.

This is my second time reviewing this wine. I had previously reviewed the 2011 vintage, but was interested to see what this wine would be like five years later with the 2016 vintage.

Plus, this review gets a lot of visits from the interwebs and I wanted to make sure readers are getting an up to date review.

Interestingly, I found some significant differences between the two different vintages.

So, what youll be reading first is my current review of the 2016 vintage.

Ill then compare and contrast that with the 2011 vintage.

I also stumbled up some interesting discoveries with the current vintage relating to fresh pours and different flavors.

With all that said, lets get on to the review of Meiomi Pinot Noir 2016.

Its One Of Constellations Brightest Stars

Wagner was 33 years old when he sold Meiomi to Constellation Brands for $315 million in July 2015, less than 10 years after its founding. How successful is Meiomi now? Constellation Brands reported $35.3 million in sales of Meiomi in its first three months, according to figures shared by Decanter. While Constellation recently sold off its lower-end labels to E& J Gallo, the company is focusing on premium wines and expanding its Meiomi offerings.

Why Pinot Noir Is The Best

French monks are the earliest known cultivators of pinot noir, using the grapes to make wine as early as the 14th century. Since then, the grape has become one of the most popular in the world. A great pinot noir will have complexity, elaborate aromas, refined texture, freshness, silky tannins, and finesse.

Comparing And Contrasting Vintages Now Versus Five Years Ago

2017 Meiomi Pinot Noir Wine Review

So, as mentioned above, this review is an update from the review I did five years ago.

I wont repeat the entire review I did for the 2011 vintage, but here are the main differences between the two:

  • Both vintages similar in appearance.
  • The current vintage has less of an alcohol bite in the nose. In my review of the 2011, I noted a strong whiff of alcohol that I didnt notice with the 2016.
  • The aromas between the two vintages are mostly similar, but I didnt notice any mocha this time, as I did previously.
  • Less complexity with the 2016 vintages taste. Perhaps a bit more refined, however.
  • Similar finish length, with more tannins noted in the 2016.
  • The biggest difference was that I suggested decanting the 2011. For the 2016, I much preferred a fresh pour.
  • Both vintages seemed a bit young to me and it may be worth letting this wine have a year or two in the cellar before drinking. Though, admittedly, Im not 100% confident in that suggestion. Just a gut feeling.
  • Overall, I enjoyed both vintages, but would give the 2011 a slight edge due it being more complex and lush.

Finally, Ive also reviewed a couple other wines from Meiomi. To see those, click below:

TASTING NOTES:

  • View: deep garnet.

  • Mouth: rich layers gently, notes of red currant and spice flavors baked with light smoke, earth and leather. A balanced, velvety texture, soft tannins, a lingering finish and succulent

APPELLATION: California.

Wagner Combined Ingenuity With Exquisite Timing

Wagner created a label that is accessible and reliable. It offers bright, berry-rich sweetness, which Americans historically love, plus balance and food-friendliness. That said, Wagner happened to bottle an affordable California Pinot Noir at exactly the time the market demanded it, when sales jumped 18 percent after 2004.
