How I Chose The Boxed Wines For Tasting

Because casually swinging by multiple grocery stores isnt the smartest idea right now, I chose options that were available at my local Kroger. Black Box and Dark Horse both make their rosé in three-liter bag-in-box formats, but they werent available at my grocery store. Instead, I tasted those same wines in their single-serve formats. I also threw in a couple of options from smaller importers that can be purchased online.

Note: Most boxes I bought denote that they last 30 days after opening, however in my experience, if you keep your box in the refrigerator, you can get closer to five or six weeks out of it.

As promised, here are my favorites in a few different categories.

House Wine Cabernet Sauvignon

A brand that consistently impressed our tasting panel, House Wines Cab is better than most inexpensive bottles of the varietal on todays market, and deserves the same mass appeal. Its soft on the palate, has great tannin structure, and is rich with dark fruit, vanilla, coconut, and peppery spice notes.

Reasons You Should Give Boxed Wine A Try

Rose and Wine Box: 20x7x4 Contents NOT Included Box Only

While it sometimes gets a bad rap, there are lots of reasons to love boxed wine. First and foremost, its super economical.

Another major plus? You waste less wine when you drink the boxed stuff. If youre the kind of person who can never finish a bottle before it starts to turn, wine-in-a-bag-in-box might be the solution for you. You can have a glass or two one night, and then three nights later have another glass that still tastes good . Because the wine is stored in a plastic bag, its not exposed to air as you tap into its contents.

And last but not least, boxed wine has a smaller carbon footprint than traditional glass bottles. This is because cardboard packaging is so much lighter than glass. While some of the components are thin plastic, which can be hard to recycle, you can, at the very least, recycle the cardboard box on the outside.

On board with the box? Great! Now you just need to learn which ones are worth your bucks. Lucky for you, I did a legit taste test.

The 12 Best Boxed Wines

Boxed wine gets a bad rap. Most often packaged in a rubber bladder thats neatly packed into a user-friendly cardboard box, the wine inside is often underestimated with the assumption that its all mass-produced, low-quality juice.

And sometimes, that is the case. Many of the big boxed wine brands on the market are sipped with quantity over quality in mind rarely savored like fine wine. But this doesnt mean all delicious vino comes in a bottle. The boxed category has recently experienced a resurgence, with more and more small and high-end brands releasing boxed wines that are delicious, balanced, and convenient all without breaking the bank.

Plus, boxed wine offers another enticing advantage: Its environmentally friendly. Not only does it have a lower production cost its also much more sustainable than its glass sibling. Glass is difficult to source, environmentally costly to create, and difficult to recycle. Plus, its weight makes transporting glass bottles emit significantly more carbon. Compare this to the lightweight, recyclable, and sometimes compostable bag-in-box treasures below, and one thing is clear as a slapped bag: Boxed wine is here to stay.

To help you discover the best of the boxed, VinePair tasted dozens of boxed wines and narrowed them down to 12 of our favorites ranked below. These are the best boxed wines available on the market today.

Best For People Who Dont Really Like Ros: Black Box Ros

Price: $17.99

Black Box

Black Box Rosé is light, crisp, refreshing, and totally drinkable. The only problem? It doesnt really taste like rosé. Though its description alleges that it has flavors of strawberry, watermelon, and white peach, this was definitely lacking the fruity flavors we were expecting.

If youre a fan of extremely dry wines, though, you might want to grab a box on your next grocery store run.

What Is Ros Wine

If white wine comes from white grapes and red wine from red grapes, rosé must come from pink grapes, right? Nature doesnt make pink grapes, and rosé wines are actually made from red grapes. This style of wine is more about the winemakers method than grape varietals.

There are four different methods to producing rosé wine. One leaves the grape skins in the juice for a short time. Another creates a lighter color by pressing the juice and skins and removing the skins right away. For the saingée process, a little red wine juice is bled off and used for red wine, while the remainder becomes a lighter-colored rosé. In contrast, some winesincluding many rosé Champagnesare actually a blend or red and white wines.

The aromas of this wine are overwhelmed by a balsamic vinegar sourness at first, but once this scent blows off quickly, it reveals an appealing bright fruitiness that translates well from the nose to the palate. In the end, it is a very solid boxed wine from a brand thats available in almost every wine shop in the country. Pair it with pizza, and thank us later.

The Best Boxed Ros: Provisions Ros Wine

My favorite in this category was Provisions Rosé Wine . The packaging doesnt denote the specific part of the U.S. that this wine is produced, just the fact that its American. Because of that lack of specificity, I didnt have high hopes. But compared to other rosés I tasted, most with an artificially sweet finish, Provisions tasted much cleaner and more refreshing. There is a hint more sweetness in this box than youd find in, say, a traditional rosé from Provence, but it wasnt cloying. The overall aroma and flavor reminded me of strawberry lemonade. I did the math and the price works out to $4.25 per 750 milliliters . Thats pretty hard to beat!

Wlffer Estate Vineyard Summer In A Bottle Long Island Ros 2021

Long Island staple Wölffer Estate has significantly increased its rosé offerings in recent years, with five different expressions now populating its lineup. This blend of nine red and white varieties remains the pick of the bunch, offering great depth of fruit, accomplished balance, and excellent value. Average price: $26.

Chateau Desclans Whispering Angel Ros $1699 For 750 Ml

No wine exemplifies the type of luxury and comfort Costco sells better than Chateau dEsclans Whispering Angel Rosé. So when I saw it at Costco for $16.99, I knew it had to be my rosé pick for this summers Costco shopping. As I mentioned, I usually see it for more like $20 to $23, unless theres a sale or promotion. Certain wine retailers will sometimes undercut this price by a few cents, but who wants to go to another store just for that? Certainly, not me.

Even though I sometimes rag on Whispering Angel for being so popular, my only real beef with the wine is the price. The wine itself is a lovely, classic Provencal rosé: notes of peach, strawberry and melon nice crisp acidity without being too tart and enough body to stand up to fairly robust food if youre serving it with a meal.

A lot of my fellow millennials and I came out of the last two years of pandemic life suddenly feeling old. Rosé isnt cool and cutting edge anymore, and neither are we. But Whispering Angel is still great just in a more settled, classic way. Maybe we are, too.

Have you tried this rosé wine from Costco? Tell us about it in the comments!

Valentines Day Wine Rose Box

Even though BIB wine has a longer shelf life than a bottle, it will go off eventually, so keep in mind that a three-litre box is the equivalent of 20 glasses of wine. People who get bored with the same food and drink night after night should think carefully about committing to the same wine for an entire month.

Its also perhaps a little too easy to keep going back to the box for a refill. Opening a second bottle of wine is a decision mindlessly tapping the box for another splash could easily become habit-forming.

Box Wines The 2022 Guide To The Best Box Wine

Box wine has a bad rap, and unfortunately a lot of it is deserved. There are way too many producers out there solely using the box to keep their costs as low as possible including filling it with the cheapest wine possible. Bad wine is bad wine, no matter how cheap it is and the format it comes in!

Once hidden away from judging eyes behind coffee machines or cookie jars or stashed deep inside refrigerators, box wines have begun to come of age and can represent the ultimate value for wine drinkers. The only problem is winnowing the wheat from the chaff because as we found firsthand — there’s still a whole lot of boxed plonk out there.

Before we get to all of our favorite picks, let’s answer the question…

Why box wine?

1) Convenience is a major factor. The typical box is three liters , which is the equivalent of 4 bottles. Boxes are easy to buy, easy to transport from the store , easy to use , and always on hand and ready to please whether you just want a smidge or you need to fill your Starbucks Trenta cup.

2) Cost! Not only do you generally save purely because you are buying in bulk, but bag in box packaging costs a fraction of traditional glass bottlings for the same amount of wine. In addition, with the box packaging itself weighing about the same as a single glass bottle there are massive savings in shipping costs which in theory get passed on to you.

Wineberry Chteau Tassin Bordeaux Blanc 2020

White Wine Box Large Size 20x7x4 For Wine, Roses, and Chocolate Covered ...

This Bordeaux Blanc, composed of 85 percent Sauvignon Blanc and 15 percent Sémillon, smells like wet rocks and a ripe, juicy pear drizzled with honey. It has pronounced minerality, with a clean, bright palate, and a puckering acidity thats filled out by melony fruit. All in all, this is an easy-drinking, crowd-pleasing white wine that would be just as at home alongside light, seafood pastas as it would with sushi.

Whats not to love about rosé? Crisp, refreshing and fruit-driven, rosé is perfect for pairing with a variety of foods, as well as sipping solo on sun-drenched afternoons. Contrary to popular belief, well-made rosés can also withstand the test of time in the cellar .

As with reds and whites, seeking out responsibly-made rosé is key. This means looking towards bottles that are produced from sustainably-farmed fruit, are produced with a light hand in the cellar, and reflect the place from which they come.

“Theres a rosé for every occasion,” says Audrey Frick, wine director of One White Street. “Good rosé shouldn’t bog you down, it shouldn’t be heavyit should always warrant another sip.” Not sure where to start? Here are the best rosé wines to drink today.
