Great Choice For Serious Enthusiasts

My third wine app and finally Ive found one that allows me to map my cellar graphically, track bottles by precise location and track maturity and apogée for optimum cellaring. Too many useful features to list. The combination of synchronized cloud and app is unbeatable. While the app doesnt have the depth of information about wines the big sites do, I have yet to find one that does a good job of accurately combining and filtering all the crowdsourced junk information from users that arent matching vintages and bottles exactly. I also dont care what people I dont know think about a particular wine, but thats just me. For me, Id rather enter the basic/key attributes myself and then link winery-sourced information from the web and PDFs directly in the app. I did most of the basic entry from my laptop with copy/paste making it something that took just a few days for more than 300 different wines. I also did bulk uploads from my old app extracts and that worked flawlessly. Maybe its not for everyone, but I put a premium on accuracy of data about the wine I buy and cellar.

What Your Software Should Do For You

As a minimum the wine cellar software should:

• track wines going in and coming out of the cellar
• give you the drinking window
• show you the location of a particular bottle in your cellar
• keep your inventory secure from prying eyes – unless you allow it

In fact many of the software brands do so much more than that, and include options like:

• managing multiple cellars for those with vacation homes or an off-site cellar
• check out the winery website of each wine
• estimate the value of your wine collection
• show your purchase price for each wine
• view the tasting notes you and others have made
• the option to use barcode labels and scanner

I will never walk into a wine store without this app, and you shouldn’t either. There are a number of apps that let you scan a wine label to get information about the wine, but we found the Vivino Wine Scanner app provides the most useful information. After you take a photo of a label, it gives you an average rating and price so you know if you are holding a good wine at a good price. Shipping generally costs between $12 and $15 per order but is free if you spend a certain amount. The free shipping benchmark varies based on the seller but is typically around $160.

What’s Next For Cellartracker

CellarTracker isn’t in the Vivino league just yet. Its website hasn’t changed much in the past nine years. Light yellow and burgundy backgrounds set a predictable theme, with text cast in longstanding Microsoft fonts such as Georgia and Verdana. The company released its mobile apps in 2014. The homepage shows a photo of LeVine’s personal cellar.

Profile pages for individual wines display user-generated “community tasting notes” and scores on the wine world’s 100-point scale, the percentage of bottles that users have consumed and drinking windows. People can add or remove wines from cellars, post public or private notes, upload label images, submit food-pairing suggestions and view similar popular wines.

Before a redesign in 2012, there were no notifications, no miniature profiles while hovering over wines and no side panels containing rich information next to search results. To appease those who don’t appreciate change, LeVine introduced a classic mode that provided access to the old interface.

“We have people who are like, ‘Don’t ever take the classic site away, and don’t change a thing,'” he said. “There’s always a subset of people like that. If you only listen to those folks, maybe they’re going to be the only people using the site someday.”

While the site is familiar to old timers, it’s not a cutting-edge internet property that attracts millions of new users each month. And it isn’t doing much with its data, which other companies can’t easily replicate.

My review here risks sounding negative as this app frustrates me due to its ancient design. The fonts, the look, is all awkward. It reminds me of the binary computers where you had to program the video games in them before getting to play them.

Adding Wines Accurately Is Just Too Much Work

VinoCells app works great and is powerful but since you cannot accurately add many wines without a lot of legwork, it is a nightmare to use. My primary point here is that there are too many matches to choose from when searching for a wine in the app. When searching for wines I have purchased, that I am trying to enter into my cellar, there are many times just too many scattered matches many users have entered their own version of a vintage release, so picking the right one with the most accurate information is a daunting task. Basically, if someone volunteered to enter all of my wines for me, I would use this app for my cellar management but only then. I overlooked all of this because I wanted an app that shows the visual layout of all of my wine racks in my cellar. This app can do that portion and do it somewhat well, but in the end I just need to be able to know exactly where every bottle is placed in my cellar and be able to quickly add new wines as accurately as possible. CT is still the best app out there for this. I do wish CT had some aspects of VinoCells interface but in the end, accurate and thorough organization and barcode/label matching is the clear winning component of CTs features which unfortunately still beats all the other competition out there in app-based cellar management.
