What Makes A Low Carb Wine
Not all wines are keto-friendly, as many have a high residual sugar content. Some you can enjoy with limitation, some are just no-gos when on a keto diet.
What you’re looking for are dry wines. A dry wine has less than 10 grams of sugar in every bottle. Sweeter wines have a shorter fermentation period. Since yeast consumes sugar in alcohol, this shorter fermentation period means not as much of the sugar has been consumed.
Seems easy, right? Wines usually don’t have nutrition facts printed on them. That means keeping a handy low carb wine chart around. Here’s one for red wine:
How To Enjoy Keto Wine In A Low
McKenzie Hagan | May 28, 2020
Can I drink wine on keto? Which wines are keto-friendly? How does alcohol affect ketosis? These are just a few of the impassioned questions you’re probably asking yourself now that you’ve decided to give the keto diet a chance. Or maybe you’re just keto-curious and trying to figure out how you could ever get through life without carbs.
Either way, you’re a wine lover and the very thought of giving up your favorite drink makes your whole body shudder. So, before we move along any further, let’s first get our bearings and offer a quick rundown of what going keto actually means. Then, we can get to all those questions that are still swimming around in your head.
Which Wines Are Keto
Dry wines have little sugar left after fermentation, which is why they don’t taste sweet. These low sugar levels mean they’re low in carbs. Some examples of low-carb wines would be dry sparkling wines or Champagne that are labeled brut,” “extra brut,” “brut nature,” or “zero brut.”
Meanwhile, sweet wines such as Zinfandel, Moscato, Port, and late-harvest Rieslings have the highest sugar content, so be sure to steer clear of those.
It’s important to note that just because a wine is fruity doesn’t automatically mean it’s sweet or high in sugar. Dry wine simply means that there are little or no residual sugars. Also, the amount of sugar in wine isn’t directly correlated to its color there are both sweet and dry red wines, white wines, and rosé wines.

Types Of Champagne By Carb Count
Here are seven types of champagne, broken down according to their sugar content:
#1: Brut Nature
This is the driest of them all. The name, nature, implies that there is little to no sweetness added. Although this type of champagne can be hard to find, its ideal for a keto diet. One 5-ounce glass typically contains less than 1 gram of carbohydrate.
#2: Extra Brut
With just a little sweetness added, this champagne still tastes quite dry. Extra brut typically contains 1 gram or fewer of carbs per 5-ounce serving.
Around 95% of champagne is classified as brut. Brut will still taste pretty dry, but it has a hint of sweetness to balance out the acidity. Brut champagne typically has 1-1.5 grams of carb per 5-ounce serving.
#4: Extra Dry
This is where things start to get confusing. Although its called dry, youll actually get more sweetness in extra dry champagne. A small amount of sugar is added to extra dry champagne, giving it a slight but distinctive sweet taste. However, its still considered relatively dry. A 5 oz serving of extra dry champagne is typically 2-2.5 grams of carbohydrates in a 5-ounce serving.
With dry champagne youll begin noticing more sweet flavor, and a bit less acidity. A 5-ounce serving of dry champagne typically has 3-6 grams of carbohydrates per serving.
Why Does Wine Contain Sugar In The First Place
Heres the thing about wine: Though you need sugar to make it, that sugar doesn’t make up much of the final product.
When a grape is ripe enough for harvesting, its juice should come in at between 21 and 25 brix , explains Brian Azimov, wine expert and founder of Wine With Brian.
Through fermentation, which occurs when yeast is added to grape juice, that sugar starts to turn into alcohol, Azimov says.
Stop the fermentation process early and youll have a wine with higher amounts of sugar and less alcohol. Ferment for longer, and you’ll have a wine with lower sugar content and more alcohol.
In climates that don’t support proper grape maturity, some winemakersespecially in France, which tends to be cooler than, say, Californiarely on chaptalization. In this process, winemakers add cane or beet sugar to the unfermented grapes, Azimov explains.
Dont stress, though: This sugar merely initiates the fermenting process. Just like the sugar in the grapes themselves, it gets turned into alcohol during fermentation.
Though winemakers ultimately decide how sweet to make any variety of wine, different types of wine generally contain different amounts of sugar, says Azimov.

How To Choose Low
If youre shopping for your own champagne, make sure the bottle states which type it is.
Remember, the added sugar can make a huge difference in the amount of carbs youre going to get per glass.
If youre trying to stay in ketosis go for the brut, extra brut, or extra dry. If you can find brut nature thats ideal but pretty rare.
If youre out and want to order a glass of bubbly, make sure to ask your server which type of champagne they have. Any upscale restaurant will have trained their staff on the different varieties. And if youre at a dive bardont drink champagne at a dive bar.
One thing to stay on top of is pour size. A 5-ounce glass of extra dry champagne may contain 2 grams of carbs, but five glasses contains 10 grams. And as lovely as it is to have a heavy pour, those grams count and can add up quickly. Stay alert.
Wonderful Wine Co Malvasia Bianca
The wines in the Wonderful Wine Co collection are just about as healthy as it gets: low-sugar, low-carb, low-sulfite, vegan and made from grapes that are organic and farmed sustainably without pesticides. And, I might add, they come in highly Instagrammable bottles.
The Malvasia Bianca deserves a shoutout, though, and not just because it only has 0.03 grams of sugar this rare crossbreed is a white wine made in the style of a red, resulting in an unusual orange color. Bolder than a typical white but mellower than your standard red, its ultra-versatile. When you cant choose between a white or red, its the best of both worlds: Refreshing enough for a warm summer night, but with enough body and acidity to stand up to a wide variety of foods.
The Wonderful Wine Cos lineup also includes a rose, Spanish syrah, and French white blend, all of which can be purchased in a three-, six-, or 12-pack. Or, if youre feeling indecisive, you can try The Starter Pack to sample several.

Hangovers Can Be Worse On Keto
Keto can worsen hangovers, too. If youre already keto adapted, youre most likely used to feeling pretty fantastic. Clear headed, great energy, no obnoxious cravings throwing you off youre living the dream.
Alcohol is dehydrating, and your body holds less water when youre running on ketones. When your body stores carbohydrates in the form of glycogen, it stores water along with them .
When youre keto, you dont carry as much water because youre running on fat, which doesnt need water for storage. Thats why you lose several pounds of water weight during your first couple weeks on keto.
Calories In Ros Or Blush Wine
Rosé and blush wines, which come in delicate shades of pink, are particularly popular when the temperatures outside are steamy.
Rosé wines can be produced from just about any red wine grape, per the Wine Institute. The pale color comes from only allowing the red or black grape skins brief contact with the clear juice during production.
A standard 5-ounce glass of rosé wine contains 126 calories, per the USDA. This sweet wine has 5.8 grams of sugar, which is far more than other wines .
There are some health benefits to drinking wine. However, moderation is key: For people assigned male at birth, drinking in moderation amounts to 2 drinks or less per day, and for people assigned female at birth, it’s 1 drink or less, per the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
And keep the size of your pour in mind: For wine, the National Institutes of Health defines a serving as 5 ounces. If you’re not measuring out ounces, it’s easy to exceed that amount.

Will Alcohol Knock You Out Of Ketosis
While Im in ketosis one drink will usually do me just fine. Im the type of girl who typically enjoys a few cocktails when Im out for a good time. A keto lifestyle is completely different. You will feel the effects of alcohol a lot sooner. This is due to a change in metabolism and depleted glycogen.
In general, while on a healthy lifestyle alcohol can inhibit results if you are trying to lose weight. When you drink alcohol your liver will use the products of the metabolized alcohol instead of fat. Which means instead of burning fat, your body is working to get the alcohol out of your body.
Occasional drinks should not harm results. If you drink often during the week or every weekend, you could be slowing your fat-burning process down. Read more about If Alcohol Will Knock You Out of Ketosis here.
Bellissima Zero Sugar Sparkling White
Even a dry prosecco can pack 17-32 grams of sugar per liter, which is almost a teaspoon per glass. But Bellisima, which happens to be legendary supermodel Christie Brinkleys wine brand, developed a state-of-the-art technique to eliminate all the sugar from their sparkling wine without compromising the taste.
This sparkling wine, which is made from 100 percent glera grapes from the Treviso-Veneto region of Italy, is vegan, organic, carb-free and only 92 calories per serving yet its velvety smooth and perfectly balanced. Its also frothier and lighter than your typical champagne, thanks to lower pressure used during the carbonation process. Sip it straight or use it as a base for mimosas at brunch.

If you follow all these tips, alcohol can have a place in a keto diet.
And These Types Of Wine Have The Most Sugar
Clocking in at seven to nine percent residual sugar, it’s no surprise that dessert wines tend to have the highest sugar content of any wines, says Largeman-Roth.
For context, while a five-ounce glass of Chardonnay has just one gram of sugar, five ounces of Port contains around 12.
The following wines tend to have the most sugar:
- Whites like Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Chenin Blanc
- Reds like Cabernet, Zinfandel and Grenache
- Sweet sparking wines, which range from 17 to 50 grams per liter: Sec, Demi-Sec,and Doux
- Dessert wines, which pack around eight grams per five ounces: Port, Sauternes, and Tokaji

How To Order Keto Cocktails And Drinks At The Bar
For me, the best drink to order at the bar is a vodka, club soda with fresh lime. If they dont have fresh limes, do not opt for their lime juice. Simply drink the vodka and soda. This is the safest route. A lot of bars and coffee shops will offer sugar-free syrups, but you cant always trust they are using the appropriate one. To stay safe, I stay clear of those while out at bars.
Calories In Sparkling Wine
These fizzy beverages are ideal for celebrations, which is why it’s so common to toast with sparkling wine at weddings. Examples of sparkling wines include Champagne, prosecco, Lambrusco and vinho verde .
Sparkling wine is classified in terms of its dryness or sweetness. If the label says “natural” it’s very dry, while a brut is dry, per the Wine Institute. Sec and demi-sec sparkling wines are sweet, according to the Wine Institute.
Sparkling wine is sometimes used in cocktails. Mix orange juice with prosecco or Champagne for a mimosa, for instance.

Does Barefoot Wine Have Sugar
. Regarding this, is there a sugar free wine?
Without sugar, there is no wine. Ripe grapes naturally contain sugars, and in the process of turning grape juice into wine, most of the sugars are converted into alcohol via fermentation. Any sugar that remains after the fermentation process is called residual sugar.

The most important factor in enjoying keto wines is perhaps the portion. RS and overall carbohydrate content are determined by a 5-ounce glass. Anyone who drinks the bottle will probably get knocked out of ketosis. The second factor is the type of wine. The kinds with the least RS are champagne, pinot grigio, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc. Higher carb wines tend to be sweeter and include Riesling, zinfandel, port wine and dessert wines.
But in order to be sure a wine is really keto, the process has to be monitored to ensure full fermentation, low sugar and ideally, lower alcohol and no additives. Third-party labs can also test for carb content.
Even though certain wines may be acceptable on a keto diet, its better not to indulge in them daily. Stick with the general guidelines for wine consumption, which includes no more than one 5-ounce glass a day for women and no more than two glasses for men. If necessary, use ketone testing strips to stay on track.
Then sit back, relax and enjoy that glass of wine.
