APPLETON, Me. Unless you have trained eyes, you could drive the narrow roads winding through the heart of coastal Maines wild-blueberry country and never realize you were surrounded by acres of blueberry vines.
They slither along close to the ground, the narrow leaves as green as grass. A field of wild- blueberry vines resembles nothing so much as a vast lawn.
If you visit in late July as the berries near peak ripeness, you may spy a glint of blue here and there. Look closely, and troves of berries begin to reveal themselves, nearer to lavender than blue, and tinier than the more familiar plump high-bush berry that makes up most of the countrys blueberry crop.
Wild blueberries are Maines bounty, the official state berry and a staple of roadside farm stands in the late summer. They are nutritious, tart, piquant and subtly complex. But there are problems: Because of competition, climate change and low commodity prices, farmers are not making enoughmoney to sustain their businesses.
This situation has been more than disturbing to Michael Terrien, a California winemaker who lives in the city of Napa with his wife, Hannah Henry, and four children.

Pffffft! A deep-purple cloud spritzes from the bottle in Michael Terriens hands, and the fragrance transports us to a Maine blueberry field at the height of summer. In reality, were standing in the fieldstone cellar of a circa-1820 barn in Jefferson, where the vintners of Bluet are hand-disgorging a few bottles of their wild-blueberry sparkling wine. Terrien offers a sip: the wine is crisp and dry, its berry taste lighter than its dark color suggests. Then he sets about disgorging another bottle, popping a temporary crown cap to expel spent yeast before quickly corking it, preserving the wines essential effervescence. Pffffft!
This is the old-fashioned way to do it, Terrien beams, his face freckled with purple spray. Coaxing champagne-style wine from wild Maine blueberries is both messier and more labor intensive than making still wines . But for Terrien and business partner Eric Martin, that challenge has become a calling.

Most sparkling wines are an industrial product, says Terrien. Bubbles are forced into the wine as CO2 theyre not developed like they are with the Champagne method were using. These are handmade wines with profound Maine integrity.

Do you remember the blue wine, Gïk, that came out last year? With cerulean hues that came from a grape skin pigment known as anthocyanin and indigo extracted from a plant, the wine was only available in select European countries. Why Wild Blueberry Wine
In Maine, we know our wild blueberries are special. Smaller, sweeter, more packed with antioxidants, a mosaic of colors and flavors, this native 10,000 year-old wild fruit grows almost exclusively in the glacial soils here and to the north in Canada. It is the original blueberry, foraged by our paleolithic ancestors and still harvested every August, this special time when local markets, roadside stands, and tables briefly burst with the vibrant, fragile fruit that tastes like summer in Maine.
Whats less known about Maines wild blueberry is that its secretly great for making wine.
When a winemaker looks at a blueberry, we know were not looking at a grape, but theres also something intriguing and familiar: the right chemistry for wine, a fruit that even shares a certain affinity with the white wine grapes of Champagne. And so in considering how to approach blueberry wine, we think about Champagnes sandy slopes and meager soil which lie near the same latitude as Maines barrens and produce a tart fruit with low sugar and vivid minerality. These conditions gave birth to one of the great innovations in winemaking, a combination of bubbles and dosage that brings out the unique fruit and character of that special place.
