I understand this is a fine dining restaurant and agree that the atmosphere and the ambiance are very inviting there. The food is great too, no doubt, but the prices could be less steep and the service more attentive. However what really turned me off was seeing the host using the lady’s room, then coming out before washing her hands. I was speechless!!! Another thing was when the people in our party tried to pay with the credit card, there were informed that the card was declined, naturally making feel everyone uncomfortable, especially in this sort of the place. We later found out from our friends, who checked their account, that there was never an attempt to charge that card. And finally, one of the people in our party got so sick, she couldn’t eat solid food for at least three days after that dinner. All she ate was a Lobster bisque and a couple of appetizers. Going back to the prices, I’m just wondering how much of the caviar does the $175 appetizer has on it that makes it so darn expensive!!!

The following blog is based on a piece originally written in the fall of 2018, and has been revised for this Special Edition of WineSpeed devoted to Oakville, Napa Valley.

A recent morning tasting Screaming Eagle has convinced me of one thing: it doesnt scream. But it does soar with such an incredible lightness of being it hardly seems corporeal. I was more than impressed with the wine. I was moved by it.

Like many others, I have heard Screaming Eagle mocked as the penultimate example of wine hubris. A $1,050 cabernet? A $500 sauvignon blanc? Are they mad? Or just maddeningly narcissistic?

About that, I dont know. But, during the visit, this part was clear: money is not what comes to mind when you look around.

Screaming Eagle is a small unadorned vineyard dotted by some dilapidated red barns. Not fancy new barns made to look old. Actual worn-down old barns with old pick-up trucks in front of them. And a couple of old black labs splayed out in the cool shade of the trucks. Until a simple crush pad and rectangle of a winery was built, the original owner, Jean Phillips, made wine in a stone building smaller than a single car garage.

At first, I found it hard to understand why this unassuming place makes such uncommonly good wine.

My notes on the 2015s are below, but first, some insight on the name Screaming Eagle, as well as some further facts about Oakville.

Screaming Eagle Winery and Vineyards is a California wine estate producing limited amounts of varietal wine due to the small quantities produced and high prices commanded, their wines are considered cult wines. The Terroir Of Screaming Eagle

Located in Oakville, in the middle of the Napa Valley, the vineyard is made up of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc. Oakville is known for well-draining soils and sits in between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. The climate on the east side of the Napa Valley floor allows this vineyard to reach ideal ripeness, and harvest sooner than many other Napa wineries. The daytime heat ripening the grapes and the afternoon breezes providing a cooling effect. There are 57 acres in total and only 27 of those acres are used to produce the Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon, with the rest providing grapes for the other Screaming Eagle wines including The Flight and Screaming Eagle Sauvignon Blanc.
