FITVINE WINE REVIEW | KETO DIET

Well, it depends. Manybut not allwines are keto-friendly. It all comes down to how much residual sugar they contain. Ideally, a keto wine will have zero residual sugar and less than 13.5 percent ABV .

When it comes to finding a wine that fits within the keto diet, your safest bet is to err on the dry side. Wines with high residual sugar content will taste sweet, while dry wines are relatively low-carb. But even wines marketed as dry can contain up to 30 grams per liter of residual sugar, so a true zero-sugar wine is hard to come by. And since the U.S. has no labeling requirements, its all about looking in the right place: Wines from France, Italy and Greece are usually drier, as is anything categorized as bone dry.

Here, 10 wines that are keto-diet approved.

The More Alcohol The More Calories

The way to reduce calories in wine is to lower the amount of alcohol, according to Bershaw. Unless we are talking about overtly sweet wines, alcohol content is by far the largest driver of calories, he said.

But this creates a bit of mystery. FitVines ABV ranges from 13.4% to 13.9%, similar to other wines, according to Bershaw. He is unsure why FitVines reduced-calorie wines are lower in calories than other wines with a similar alcohol and sugar content.

When Bershaw did a calculation for a lower-alcohol Riesling, it was slightly lower in calories than FitVines wines because of the lower ethanol content. In other words, there may be other lower-calorie wines out there, but they just may not be marketed as such, he explained.

Censes Sauvignon Blanc, the product of a partnership between Truett Hurst Wineries and Weight Watchers, is made using an exclusive technology that offers consumers a wine with an ABV of 9.6% and only 85 calories per 5-ounce glass . In essence, we can capture the alcohol and take what percentage out we want, but we keep the aromas and essences and mouthfeel of a full alcohol wine, said Jason J. Strobbe, Truett Hursts executive vice president. He said the company will be releasing a lower-calorie rosé in February.

Calories In Merlot Wine

Merlot wine has an average of 24 calories per ounce. Somewhat surprising for a red, merlot can actually have fewer calories than a number of white wines. Like chardonnay, merlot turns out to be 120 calories a glass and 600 calories a bottle. If you are a lover of red wines, merlot is one of the best for sticking within a certain calorie count. Dont think youll have to give up all red wine for your diet.

Taste Test : Brancott Estate

Fitvine Cabernet Sauvignon, California, 2017

First up was Brancrott Estates Flight Song Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. This pick is naturally 20-percent lighter in calories than the other wines in the Brancott Estate family, due to the winemakers selecting and harvesting the grapes earlier than usual, when their sugar levels are lower.

The four of us all agreed it tasted more like a mixed drink than wine, but one friend chose it as her favorite of the three. While it was by no means terrible, if youre looking for wine flavor, we just didnt get it.

Coming in at 89 calories per 5-ounce serving, is the taste sacrifice worth a 20-percent calorie savings? Nah. Not to mention, the alcohol content is pretty low at only 9 percent, which may lead to drinking more and defeating the whole lower calorie thing. A bottle retails for $13.99.

So it makes sense that our keto-obsessed, clean-eating, health-focused society would crave healthier wine options.

Enter: FitVine, a “healthy” wine company that claims to help you “crush life.” But is it actually any healthier? Here, a FitVine wine review that dives into the ways this “healthy” wine is different from “regular” wine.

Fitvine Wine Cabernet Sauvignon

Unsurprisingly, FitVine is a brand with a wide range of low-calorie wine options. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is a great choice for a low-calorie red wine because its a full-bodied and richly flavored wine without all the added sugar. Its also low in sulfates, which can be very helpful if you have a wine allergy. Best of all, its still 12%-14% ABV, which is a good wine alcohol content, especially for a low-calorie option. This is definitely a red wine worth trying.

    Best White Wines For Keto

    Fitvine Cab

    1. Sauvignon Blanc

Despite its almost sweet crispness, sauvignon blanc contains the least amount of carbs and sugars, making it a top dry keto wine to choose from. In just one glass of sauvignon blanc, youll find only 3 grams of carbs.

    2. Chardonnay

While both sauvignon blanc and chardonnay are considered dry wines, the former is a light-bodied wine and the latter is just the opposite: a full-bodied wine.

Despite this difference, a glass of chardonnay will run you 3.2 grams of carbs, just slightly above a sauvignon blanc, but not by much.

    3. Pinot Grigio

A glass of pinot grigio will set you back around the same amount of carbs as a glass of cabernet sauvignon. And if youre in the mood for white wine, pinot grigio and pinot blanc are about equal nutritionally.

    4. Pinot Blanc

Pinot blanc, which closely resembles a pinot grigio, also clocks in at 3.8 grams of carbs per serving.

You may have noticed there isnt much of a difference between the carb counts in these top seven keto-friendly wines. Each glass from this list ranges between 3 and 3.8 grams of carbs.

However, you will see a much different picture when you compare these seven to the rest of the wines out there.

Rieslings are typically a light golden, medium-bodied wine with a bite of acidity and relatively low alcohol. These hit a little higher in carb count at 5.5 grams per glass, but one glass shouldnt kick you out of ketosis.

    Low Carb Sangria Recipe

Time to put this new formula to work! Remember my recipe for white wine sangria? Well I revamped it to be more low carb & keto friendly using the tips above!

Youll notice that I didnt specify a flavor of sparkling water in the recipe. Thats because theres a lot of room to play with flavors here. I want you to take all the liberties to make this your own! Choose flavors that compliment the fruit in your sangria. I would personally choose to make this recipe with peach or mango flavored sparkling water. A citrus option like lime or grapefruit would also create a nice balance with the berries.

If youre feeling particulary ambitious, you can use different flavors of sugar free syrup to jazz up the cocktail. I am a huge fan of Jordans Skinny Syrups. Heres a code for $5 off your order at skinnymixes.com!

    White Wine Skinny Mojito

FitVine’s Pinot Grigio is very dry, clean, and crisp. It’s natural hints of citrus and goes beautifully with lime and mint. At only 90 calories, .2 grams of sugar, and 3 carbs, this Skinny Mojito is a girls new BFF! Just chill the wine , muddle a few mint leaves, and squeeze some fresh lime wedges. Out comes a refreshing, light, skinny mojito!!

And These Types Of Wine Have The Most Sugar

Clocking in at seven to nine percent residual sugar, it’s no surprise that dessert wines tend to have the highest sugar content of any wines, says Largeman-Roth.

For context, while a five-ounce glass of Chardonnay has just one gram of sugar, five ounces of Port contains around 12.

The following wines tend to have the most sugar:

    • Whites like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Chenin Blanc
    • Reds like Cabernet, Zinfandel, and Grenache
    • Sweet sparking wines, which range from 17 to 50 grams per liter: Sec, Demi-Sec,and Doux
    • Dessert wines, which pack around eight grams per five ounces: Port, Sauternes, and Tokaji

    What My Friends Said

My wine score did not match up with my friends this time around, which makes sense because everyone has different wine preferences! Heres what my friends thought of the wine we sipped

    Chardonney

Chardonnay is my go to wine, always. This is eh. It has the after toungue tingle of a normal chardonnay, but tastes lighter. I would chose to drink this in the beach, pool or watching the Bachelorette alone, but not at a house party or nice restaurant.

    Pinot Noir

A good, solid red. Id drink this anywhere, anytime.

    Cabernet Sauvignon

    Stronger tannins throughout. Steak.

    Sauvignon Blanc

Tastes more like wine than the chard. I would invite this wine to a house party and would chose it if it was on a happy hour menu on a patio.

    Other Feedback

If I were going to a party and wanted to bring a bottle, I would not be embarrassed to bring either of the reds.

Given that these are all diet wines or healthy winesthat changes the perspective. If I was in the mood to drink, or was day drinking all day, FitVine here I come. In other words, its good.

I loved the reds, on target as far as the taste I expect from a Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. The whites struck me as lighter versions of what I expected, but Im a Pinot Grigio drinker so wasnt surprised when I didnt gravitate as much towards the whites the Chardonney and Sauvignon Blanc. Id say fewer calories and less sugar, the reds are a good bet.
