Whole Foods Sources Some Of Its Chicken And Beef From Tyson And Perdue

But big poultry is incorporating;many of Whole Foods’ practices to meet demand.

In the lead-up to Amazon acquiring Whole Foods in June for $13.7 billion, the organic grocery store was steadily losing market share to larger companies like Kroger and Walmart. While it seemed clear that Whole Foods would need to make serious changes in order to keep pace with its competitors, Whole Foods CEO John Mackey reassured the public that he wasnt going to let Amazon mess with the highest quality, delicious natural and organic products that youve come to love and trust by replacing them with lesser quality versions of themselves. However, it seems like that promise was not an easy one to keep.*

According to a Bloomberg report, a growing percentage of Whole Foods’ poultry and beef is now sourced from mega-sized producers, including Perdue and Tyson-owned brands. One way this occurs is that after the products are delivered to Whole Foods for final processing, the company packages the chicken under the 365 Everyday Value label and sells it in its stores, despite being available for a lower cost at other supermarkets. Additionally, while Whole Foods only sells meat that is certified as Step 1 or higher by the Global Animal Partnership , the company sources some of its beef from Meyer Natural Angus, which processes its meat in a Cargill facility in Colorado that also processes GAP-uncertified cattle simultaneously, albeit separately.

The Best Biodynamic And Organic Wines For Under $30

Sustainability Trends in Wine Packaging

As Ive admitted in the past, one of the results of my month-long vice detox is that Ive become a bit of a fancy pants when it comes to wine, especially red wine without additives.

Over the last few years, since completing The Wellness Project, my pursuit of healthy hedonism has meant less wine, but also better, cleaner wine that is responsibly made.

Luckily, organic wines have been cropping up more and more on restaurant lists, going toe to toe with the conventional heavy weights. The contents of these bottles are made using organic farming and harvesting practices meaning, no additives, pesticides and such.

If a wine is also biodynamic, it means that the vineyard is harvested sustainably according to the lunar calendar. Usually, biodynamic vineyards also have a working farm nearby, as the wine production is weaved into the overall sustainability of the operation as a whole.

Biodynamic wines have no added sulfites, sugar or other additives. You can also safely assume theyre organic, even if they dont have the certification.

For a while natural wines were also thought to be a flavor seekers gamble. Without a little help from laboratories to correct imperfections and irregularities from crop to crop, these bottles can often have a funky, off-putting quality. As my good friend, natural wine enthusiast, and soon-to-be sommelier, David Bruno told me: this is a big misconception.

Dry Farm Wines Review

Whole Foods Market China Organic California blend ?

The sad thing is, I could go on and on but why beat a dead horse? We get it. Conventional wine is disgusting. So lets talk about some natural wine options. One in particular: Dry Farm Wines.

Dry Farm Wines is the largest buyer and reseller of natural wines in the world. They source, taste and lab test organic, natural and biodynamic wines worldwide THEN deliver it to your door monthly or every other month. Heres whats up.

Natural wine, defined by Dry Farm Wines, is real wine made from healthy grapes and happy yeast. Its nature at its best IMO. To be considered natural, wines are farmed organically and/or biodynamically, free of chemical sprays, additives and fermented with native yeast.

There are so many bennies here but I have to start out with the the one that knocked my socks off: taste.

Wait, first let me say, next to the birth of my two sons, arriving home to 6 bottles of organic/biodynamic Dry Farms Wine at my door was literally the best day of my life. Little did I know it was only about to get better.

I got the mixed delivery, which included three reds, a rose, a sparkling white and a sparkling rose.

Where To Buy Organic Wines

Dry Farms Wine is a great option and I highly recommend it but if this is not for you there are several other options for organic or natural wine.

  • Look for the USDA organic seal on your bottle of wine at the grocery. This wine will be made with grapes that were farmed organically but the likelihood is that they still use machinery and other additives in the winemaking process. Farming is only one step in the winemaking process. But this is still a better option than non-organic in my opinion.
  • Check out Whole Foods Eco-Friendly wine sectionthey have an assortment of organic + biodynamic wines.
  • Ask to speak to the wine buyer at your local liquor or wine store. Tell them you want a natural wine either organic or biodynamic and they will help you with some options. Most natural wines are not marked as natural. Rely on the experts!
  • Order international wines over domestic wines when dining out. Specifically, wines from French regions like Loire Valley and Jura. Dry Farms says they have been making wine in a drinkable, clean style for far longer than Americans have. It wont be perfect but its better than domestic labels.

Buying And Storing Tips

Whole Foods vs. Trader Joe

Ready to find your new go-to or special-occasion Italian wine? Check out Melanies insider tips for navigating our Wine department. After youve found the perfect bottle, make sure to store it properly if youre not planning to drink it right away.

  • Know how to navigate our aisles: In each store, the Wine department is organized to mirror the geography of Italy. Left to right showcases wines from north to south.

  • Check the region: Cooler regions tend to produce lighter wines with higher acidity and more tannins. As you work south to areas with warmer growing seasons, the profile becomes darker, riper and jammier, with notes of spice.

  • Trust the importer: When in doubt, look for the wine importer on the label. Think of importers as art curators if you love one of their wines, chances are youll like other selections in their portfolio too.

  • We can help: Team members in the Wine department are happy to help point you in the direction of age-worthy candidates or something perfect for tonight.

  • Store with care: It doesnt take a wine cellar, a special fridge or even a rack to age wine safely. Find a cool, dark, temperature-controlled space like a closet and stash away a few bottles. Lay them flat so that the cork doesnt dry out. You might be surprised at the nuance and change a few years of maturity can bring.

Does Whole Foods Recycle Wine Corks

4.1/5Whole FoodsRecycle Wine CorksWhole Foodswine corkscorksrecyclingWhole Foods

The issue with wine corks is that they can‘t be recycled through most of the normal doorstep recycling methods but you can put them in your compost bin. Companies like ReCork America, the largest cork recycler in North America, take natural corks and turn them into shoes, yoga blocks, and more.

Subsequently, question is, are wine corks worth anything? Auctions for wine corks sell in lots as small as 20 and as large as 500. The wine bottles usually sell for about 50 cents per bottle, but fancier bottles can fetch near $5.00 each . Wine corks, however, generally sell for about 10 cents each.

Similarly, where can I donate wine corks?

Below are three organizations that empower you to get involved in the cork repurposing process.

  • Cork Club. Cork Club is a sustainability initiative funded by WIDGETCO to benefit Forest and Ocean Conservation.
  • ReCORK. ReCORK is North America’s largest natural wine cork recycling program.
  • Whole Foods Cork ReHarvest.

What do you do with used corks?

  • Pour Spouts. If you have a bottle of oil or vinegar that pours overzealously, then slice a small wedge lengthwise out of a cork and jam it in the bottle neck.
  • Cleaning Knives.

The Wine Department At Whole Foods Kensington Brilliant

My Purpose l Company Info l Whole Foods Market

A couple of days ago I popped into the Whole Foods store in Kensington , and browsed their wine department. Its simply brilliant: a great list of wines, with a good spattering of natural wines, too. This is one of the best places in London for buying wines by the bottle I reckon, and while their prices arent the keenest, theyve got stuff that its hard to find elsewhere.

Theres also a bar section where you can buy wines at cost price and drink them with a selection of small plates. I really would like to organize a small lunch there one day theres just so many good wines that Id like to drink on their list.
