How Do French Wines Get Their Names

Wine with Women ep. 3: FondOfBeetles – Dr. Emma Hilton

Vineyard location is the organizational principle behind French wine law and the basis for naming French wines. Terroir is the French word for the set of natural conditions that any one vineyard has – the unique combination of climate, soil, altitude, slope, and so forth, in any one location. How are wines named and labeled? There are 2 main styles of wine labels commonly found in the stores. A wine identified by its brand name or a wine designated by its appellation credentials. A wine that is labeled by it’s brand will indicate what grapes it’s made of on the front label .

The plimsoll line is often confused with the single pour line. It is used by restaurants to serve food.

Any glass printed with ink that contains small particles of ground-up glass is referred to as fritted glass. The glass is fused into the ink as a result of the printing process. Some of the methods of digital printing include screen printing.

Women Are Taking The Winemaking Industry By Storm With Many Award

In 1804 France, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin became a widowor Veuve in Frenchat just 27. This left Madame Clicquot in control of a company with holdings in banking, wool trading, and the Bouzy Vineyards. Rather than sell the vineyard business and live off the resulting fortune, the often audacious Madame Clicquot secured funding and invested in research and development of champagne. Two hundred years later, Veuve Clicquot Champagne is still among the most popular brands on the planet.

Today, women like Madame Clicquot continue to take the winemaking industry by storm with award-winning options in every varietal. There are some phenomenal women of wine today. Here are a few of my favorite women-made wines.

Tyler winemaker Justin Willett has been lucky enough to craft a celebrated pinot from this vineyard for over a decade now.

“Utilizing cooler climate single vineyard sites with close proximity to the ocean, Justin Willett creates perfectly balanced pinots and chardonnays,” says Lopez. “All of his wines are made the exact same, to express the individual terriorsand this juicy, vibrant, and salty offering is among the elite wines of all of California.”

Women Who Drink Wine Get Pregnant More Quickly

Best wines for your heart

Women who drink wine achieve planned pregnancies faster than other women, new research has shown.

A study of almost 30 000 women shows that women who drink wine get pregnant more quickly than those who drink beer or spirits.

“Wine drinkers experienced significantly shorter waiting times compared with those who reported no wine intake,” says a report of the study in Human Reproduction , which was based on the Danish national birth cohort.

The aim of the study was to examine the relation between specific types of alcohol consumption and waiting time to pregnancy. Although several studies have looked at alcohol consumption and women’s fecunditythe time it takes for a sexually active couple not using contraception to achieve pregnancythe authors say that to their knowledge no study has had the power or data to examine the effect of specific types of alcohol.

All of the participants were asked how much they drank and whether it was beer, wine, or spirits, and how long they had tried to become pregnant before succeeding.

Half of the women became pregnant within the first two months of trying, and 15% waited long than 12 months. In general, while they were trying to get pregnant, women consumed more wine than beer and a very small amount of spirits. Almost 80% had a moderate intake of winebetween 0.5 and 7 glasses a weekbut only half of the women consumed the same amount of alcohol by drinking beer.

Other Strange Reasons Why Wine Is An Aphrodisiac

Perhaps youve heard that wine and chocolate are aphrodisiacs. So why is this?

Well, its been suggested that its because of the presence of amines. Amines are organic compounds that are present in very small amounts in wine.

Several analyses of red wines including, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, indicated that wines with the highest amounts of amines tend to be made with natural yeasts, oak-aged, unfined, unfiltered and had undergone malolactic fermentation.

A few of the common amines found in red wine are histamine, tyramine, spermidine, putrescine and serotonin. Histamine correlates to an increased sex drive, alertness, and weight loss.

However, despite its positives as a stimulant, histamine can also cause inflammation and hypertension in people who are highly sensitive to it. So again, with all things

Region: Sauternes, Bordeaux, France | ABV: 13.5% | Tasting Notes: Honeycomb, Ginger, Vanilla cream

When seeking out great dessert wines, Chris Raftery, sommelier at Gramercy Tavern, recommends looking to second releases from top producers. Just like the dry wines of the region, many producers release a second wine at a more affordable price for earlier consumption: enter Petit Guiraud, the second wine of Château Guiraud, a top estate dating back to 1766, he says. Raftery cites decadent notes of honeycomb, ginger, and vanilla cream from the wine, describing it as everything you want from Sauternes, yet doesnt break the bank.

Good to Know:Raftery also explains that in addition to pairing beautifully with dessert, well-made sweet wines also make great savory pairings, too. Sauternes works as a counter pairing to both spicy cuisine and richer dishes like gorgonzola risotto, butter-drenched lobster or grilled scallops, or even corn on the cob and of course, seared foie gras, he reveals.

Best Organic: Larkmead Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Region: Napa Valley, California | ABV: 14.7% | Tasting Notes: Dark fruit, Tobacco, Fresh-turned earth, Dark chocolate

This winery, under the watch of winemaker Dan Petroski, doesn’t just focus on making world-class wine. Petroski helps shed light on the necessary work for studying climate change, and in 2015, Larkmead converted to organic farming practices.

Cabernet collectors should stockpile wines from the 2016 vintage, which are high in naturally vibrant acidity due to a moderate growing season. Hallmark signifiers are deep, dark fruit and a distinct freshness, all of which the 2016 Larkmead has in spades. Adding to that are incredibly alluring brown spices, fresh-turned earth and tobacco wrapped in dark chocolate, with mouthwatering purple violet notes and firm, dusty tannins.

This is a wine to contemplate over many hoursand, ideally, over the next decade, with a bottle or two every year.
