A cheat day that involves consuming high-carb foods may disrupt ketosis, but a glass of wine wouldnt. That amount of wine in a day is optimal because too much alcohol will negatively affect your body.

Being on a keto diet makes you prone to stronger hangovers because the lack of carbs decreases your alcohol tolerance. Being drunk also lowers your inhibitions to eat high carbohydrate foods, thus disrupting ketosis.

Drinking Alcohol & Still Losing Weight Is it Possible? Dr.Berg

No matter your diet, relaxation is an important part of life. For over half of Americans, relaxation involves alcohol, while some people’s bodies respond problematically to alcohol. For many of us a drink or two is the perfect way to chill out and alcohol does have a range of moderate health benefits in its favor. Humans are no strangers to drinking as the genetic mutation we developed ten million years ago enabling us to digest ethanol is credited with our evolution from tree dwelling creatures to land dwelling ones. That’s because the ability to digest ethanol enabled us to eat fruit that fell to the forest floor rather than only being able to eat fruit still attached to trees.

You dont have to avoid all alcohol in order to stay in ketosis. With the right choices, its quite possible to enjoy a drink or two and stay on the keto diet.

Some alcoholic drinks can fit into a healthy ket diet, while some over-the-top mixed drinks contain massive amounts of sugar. In short:

    How To Handle A Hangover

If you only have a few drinks, then you probably won’t have to worry about dealing with a splitting headache and/or inside-out stomach feeling the day after drinking.

But if you do end up having more than 2-3 drinks , then don’t be surprised when you wake up with symptoms of a nasty hangover.

I don’t drink often, nor have I ever drank enough to get seriously sick, but I have experienced some of the undesirable consequences of drinking a little too much.

Here are some of the things I do to both limit the chances of a hangover and also recover from one:

    • Stay hydrated throughout the night: A lot of the groggy and low-energy feelings of being hungover are usually a result of being mildly dehydrated.
    • Eat, or don’t: Listen to your body, sometimes a hearty breakfast is all you need to get up and going while sometimes it’s best to avoid food until your stomach settles. Whatever you choose, just be sure that you are drinking plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
    • Man Up!: Honestly, there’s not a whole lot you can do to eliminate the negative effects of drinking entirely. You may just have to suck it up and fight through it temporarily.

Your body isn’t worried about how much your head or tummy hurts while it’s trying to get rid of the ethanol poison you forcefully shot down your mouth.

Drinks are usually measured in ounces . This is equivalent to 12 oz of beer, 5 oz of wine, or 1 oz of spirits. The amount of liquor is 5 ounces. The problem with having a drink every day, however, is that it will be too much for keto dieters. Dr. Weiss says while drinking occasionally is okay, drinking every day can slow fat burning.

    Mixed Drinks / Cocktails

Can I Drink Wine and Still Lose Weight?

If things seem likely to go off the rails with cocktails for carb counts, your worry is with good cause. It’s actually the mixers in mixed drinks that tend to contain all of the sugar. This is fairly straightforward: sugary sodas, fruit juices, and liqueurs are sweet from sugar, whether added or naturally occurring. When you add any of them to alcohol, you increase the carbohydrate count significantly and make yourself much more likely to fall out of ketosis. You also increase your chances of a hangover from the sugar content.

There’s no doubt that cocktails are more enjoyable than sipping on straight alcohol. If cocktails are your drink of choice, pick simple low or no calorie mixers such as soda water, stevia sweetened soda, pure cranberry juice, flavored sparkling water, or tea.

How To Drink While In Ketosis

    KETO DIET AND ALCOHOL

Ok so while Im preaching to stay away from alcohol if you want to lose weight on keto, I know thats easier said than done.

Hell, Im only in week 2 of my current keto cycle and Ive already managed to knock myself out of ketosis because of one weekend. Le sigh.

If you do want to indulge and not find yourself knocked out like me, here are a few tips:

    • Stick to hard liquor shots or chased with zero carb chasers such as soda water or diet sodas. I still think diet sodas are a terrible idea with the artificial sweeteners, but if you must
    • Have just one drink. Especially if this is your first time drinking while on keto. Watch for your new tolerance level.
    • Drink lots of water. Remember that the keto diet is diuretic in nature and so youll want to be replenishing plus helping your liver to flush out where possible.
    • Eat a big keto meal beforehand. Drinking on an empty stomach is always a bad idea and can be deadly on the keto diet. Just ask about alcohol ketoacidosis.
    • This goes without saying but always have a designated driver when youre planning to have drinks. Never drink and drive.

    What Is Keto Wine

Keto wine refers to wine that is friendly to a keto diet, i.e., it wont disrupt ketosis. Basically what this translates to is wine that is low in carbs.

As you probably know if youre reading this, the keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat and moderate protein diet that aims to burn fat by keeping your body in a state of ketosis. When your body enters ketosis, your liver uses stored and consumed fat to produce ketone molecules for energy, thus making you lose weight. If you are thinking of going on this diet, make sure to consult with your doctor first as it is not safe for everyone.

How Many Glasses Of White Wine Can You Have On Keto

Keto dieters should avoid excessive consumption of wines on a daily basis, even if they are allowed on occasion. Stick to the general wine consumption guidelines, which state that women should drink no more than one 5-ounce glass per day and men should drink no more than two glasses. Ketone testing strips can be used to stay on track if necessary.
