If youre a fan of the bestselling J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon from California and havent tried the 2019 Escudo Rojo Reserva Cab Sauv from the Maipo Valley in Chile , youre missing out.
Its costs less than the $23.95 J. Lohr wine and tastes just as good. Its a Vintages release though, so wont last.
Escudo Rojo is a winery owned by Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Bordeaux fame that consistently earns high accolades from respected critics. And the 2019 Escudo Rojo Cabernet Sauvignon is a standout buy.
In the glass, its deep, dark and teems with heady scents of muddled blackberries drizzled with blackcurrant liqueur. Then it sweeps in with velvety fruit thats complex and layered. Each sip shifts from blackcurrants and black cherry to grilled hazelnut and cedar before tobacco leaf, cocoa and a touch of warm clove emerge through the elegant fruit centre. Languid, long and luxurious, this wine with its chalky-chocolaty finish seriously overdelivers. Score: 96
If you gravitate to the wildly popular NV Meiomi Pinot Noir from California the bestselling Pinot Noir in Canada theres a wine from Ontario that tastes quite similar, but more sophisticated better balanced, more complex and longer. Its the 2019 Henry of Pelham Speck Family Reserve Baco Noir, VQA Ontario , that costs a mere two dollars more at the LCBO than the Meiomi.

The Brand Went From Zero To 5000 Real Quick
A lot has changed in the 24 years since Kim Crawford was founded. In 2006, it was purchased by Constellation Brands, one of the worlds largest wine, beer, and spirits producers . The Kim Crawford brand now resides over almost 5,000 acres of land across New Zealand. The brand now produces seven different varieties in two of New Zealands most famous wine regions: Hawkes Bay, which is best known for its Chardonnay and Marlborough, beloved for its Sauvignon Blanc.
For The New Zealand Winery Sauvignon Blanc Remains King
Though New Zealands wine regions produce more than Sauvignon Blanc, the varietal is undoubtedly its largest, accounting for more than 60 percent of the countrys total output. So beloved is Sauvignon Blanc, its also the favorite Kim Crawford product by far: Of its eight products, Kim Crawfords Sauvignon Blanc is the biggest seller by a landslide, accounting for 90 percent of the brands overall sales.

Kim Crawford: The Man Behind The Brand
Early on November 1, New Zealander Erica Crawford enthusiastically tweets her Twitter followers, telling them that today, at last, is bottling day for the new organic .
Loveblock is her husband Kims first new product, other than contract deals, since leaving the company which owns his trademark name, and it has been years in the making. There is reason for her excitement.
Within days, however, she has deleted the message. When youve sold your name for close to 60 million New Zealand dollars , it pays to be careful how you use it: legally, under the terms of the nearly 10-year-old deal, neither of the Crawfords can promote their links with any other wine. But with the explosion of social media, its easy to slip up when your name is no longer just your own, but rather someone elses business.
In 2003, when the Crawfords sold their brand to Canadian wine giant Vincor it created ripples of interest. Not because wine company sales were rare in New Zealand after all, Wither Hills had gone to Lion Nathan, and Montana to Allied Domecq but because millions had been paid purely for the name, with no physical assets such as a vineyard or buildings. About NZ$18 million was exchanged up front, with the balance contained in an earn-out clause over the five years the Crawfords remained in the business to drive up sales and exports.
So why did the Crawfords sell their company to Vincor in 2003?

Kim Crawford Might Be The Reason You Love New Zealand Wines
The U.S. saw its first bottles of Kim Crawford Wines in 1998, two years after the companys founding. Since then, it has gained a cult-like following here in the States.
While this may simply be due to the brands name being easier for Americans to pronounce than most other Kiwi brands Maori names, Crawford attributes the brands success with his decision not to sweeten the wines then a common practice among New Zealand wine brands attempting to accommodate Americans saccharine palates.

The Wine Kim Crawford Makes After He Quit Making Kim Crawford
This story appears in the October 23, 2017 issue of Forbes Asia.
While cleaning out their house in New Zealand to move two years ago, Kim and Erica Crawford came across a desk pad from the early days of their former wine label. On it they had mapped out their future: Grow the brand, sell it within nine years and then buy land.
They had done just that–building a bestselling sauvignon blanc label that they sold for a small fortune, which allowed them to develop sizeable vineyards, land that they love. “We were very focused, between the two of us. We knew exactly where we were going,” says Erica.
Veterans of the grape: We now have infrastructure and know what to plant, says Erica Crawford,… with husband Kim at their Marlborough estate.
Jim Tannock For Forbes
The Crawfords are now almost a decade into their second act, running Loveblock Wines, their organics-driven estate amid the windswept hills of Marlborough in the northeastern tip of the South Island. It’s been challenging, even with their experience and capital. Building a vineyard from scratch is expensive and time-consuming, farming is all about managing risk, and organics are not generally known as a moneymaker. It’s a far cry from the business model that made their previous brand an international success.
MEANWHILE, AT KIM CRAWFORD
Kim Crawford Was Ahead Of Its Time
Working remotely may be considered normal these days , but when Kim Crawford started a virtual winery in 1996, it was seen as an innovative way to make wine without having to invest large sums of money in physical land and equipment. Crawford, already an experienced winemaker in New Zealand, decided to set up shop in his Auckland home, working with a variety of growers and producing his wine labels in local facilities.
