Napa Valley Vs Sonoma Valley
The second biggest confusion is Napa Valley vs. Sonoma Valley. These are to different wine regions! While they are near each other, a large mountain range runs between them which makes it a very bad idea to try to go wine tasting in both Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley on the same day
Also, Sonoma Valley has the town of Sonoma just like Napa Valley has the town of Napa, so that confuses people a LOT.
Sonoma Valley also has a really different vibe, landscape and wine specialties compared to Napa Valley. I chat more about that in this post.

Stags Leap Wine Cellars Oakville Napa
Founded in 1970 by Warren Winiarski, this winery brought international acclaim to Napa Valley winemaking when their 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon won the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting. A bottle of 1973 Stags Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon was inducted into the Smithsonian National Museum in 1996 as a result of being awarded first in this competition and to reflect the impact that the achievement had on the US wine industry as a whole. The winerys newly remodeled facility provides a centerpiece of all encompassing views of the gorgeous vineyards and Napa countryside. The winerys cave is the moral center of the universe, according to founder Warren Winiarski. He installed an amazing floor-to-ceiling Foucault pendulum at the center of the vaulted caves. Its an awesome sight to behold as it swings methodically. And, as a side note, the winery was sold to a joint venture by Château Ste. Michelle and Marchesi Antinori in the summer of 2007, so that Winiarski is no longer involved. Reservations are required.

What To Wear To A Winery In The Spring
The weather in Napa during the springtime ranges from the high 60s to low 70s during the day and mid to upper 40s in the morning and evening.
Napa Valley in May is chilly in the mornings and evenings, but the daytime temperature is perfect. Perfect to me is the 70s, so if you like it a little warmer during the day, I would recommend waiting until last spring or early summer to visit Napa Valley.
In the spring pack more sweaters than you expect. Keep the sweaters handy in your car if you dont plan on going back to the hotel before going to dinner. Its also useful to keep them in the car when the tasting room is too cold or if you want to enjoy a glass of wine outside in the winery patio and its too breezy.

Where To Find Our 10 Best Wine Hotels In The Napa Valley
Napa is the biggest centre in the valley, and has a good range of accommodation options, but its not as pretty as some of the smaller towns, and a greater concentration of the best wine hotels in the Napa Valley can be found higher up the valley. Napa does have a great produce market and a number of excellent restaurants in its favour though.
Yountville, nine miles north of Napa, is a foodie favourite, with more Michelin stars per capita than any other American town. And one of the main reasons to stay in Yountville is so you can walk home after a boozy supper.
St. Helena is one of the prettiest, and thus most popular towns, also known for having the most expensive boutiques and most glamorous visitors.
Calistoga is the least developed town in the valley with an old fashioned feeling main street. But what its really known for are its natural springs, so theres the bonus opportunity of enjoying the natural hot springs and hot mud baths.
This is also a great place to come if you want to really escape, and some of the best wine hotels in the Napa Valley are converted – or partly converted – wineries, offering serene vineyard views and often grape related spa treatments.

Napa Trip Report 5/9 Sorry Long Too
We were all looking forward to a brand new day of wine tasting. Ate a plentiful breakfast at Blackbird Inn .
10am – Schramsburg tour & tasting
Couldn’t find Schramsburg. The sign was soooo small & placed very low on the ground it was hard to see & very easy to miss. Schramsburg’s explanation was that they only allow 80 people visiting them on a daily basis & they didn’t want too many people to just walk-in to their property. Very interesting… we spent 15 min circuling around before finding this gem.
The tour was very interesting & informative. They started out telling us about the history of their winery, then followed by a visit to their underground cave. We saw layers & layers of thick spider web on the caves’ ceiling, and a thick film of dust on the bottles. They still use the old methode champenoise to settle the yeast. For $25/pp, we get to taste their reserve , rose, and a couple others. We thought the tasting was money well spent. We liked their J Schram & wanted to get a case, but after a quick call to my friend in Houston & checked the price at Specs, we found we could purchase in Houston instead at a better price. We did purchase a couple of their sparkling wine stoppers on the way out.
JV wine & tasting bar
Thousands of wines to choose from, mostly cheaper than if ordered at the winery. We loaded up what we needed and headed back to Blackbird Inn.
