Notre Dame Has Its Own Wine Our Expert Tries All 5 Bottles

#PARIS (Vlog 2): Notre-Dame, vintage shops and trip to Barcelona | Luiza Scandelari

Cheers, cheers for old Notre Dame.

It’s college football bowl season, and oddly, the famous golden dome helmets of the Fighting Irish are nowhere to be seen. All is not lost, however, for Domers and their legion of disciples, the so-called “subway alumni” who never set foot in a Notre Dame classroom but claim the school and its traditions as their own. Because they can now get their hands on the 2016 edition of Notre Dame-branded wine.

Yes, the University of Notre Dame has its own wine. For the second year in a row, actually. Go ahead and roll your eyes, if you must or suppress your cynicism, and embrace the fact that this is more evidence, more good news, that wine continues to gently infiltrate everyday life in the United States.

To arrive at the five California bottles now available for purchase in the Notre Dame Family Wines 2016 collection, ND tasters worked their way through submissions from more than 40 wineries with ties to the university. These are alumni and friends of the school, and just to be clear, none of them learned how to make wine in South Bend, Ind. Notre Dame is not claiming to be a winemaking school.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker to dangle tax relief as part of his first reelection-year budget proposal »

This year, though, don’t save any bottles. If you’re a Notre Dame fan, you probably need all you can get. The Fighting Irish posted an uncharacteristic 4-8 record, including a crippling loss to USC in the final game.

Why We Love It

  • The Domaines vines of Sablet, over 40 years old, are located on the slopes overlooking the village for Grenache and near the village for Syrah .
  • This sleeper in our portfolio is a total steal and Bruno Walkers go-to for a look twice Rhone value.

Varietal Composition: 60% Grenache, 40% Syrah

Elaboration: The selection of old vines is manually harvested and the grapes carefully sorted. All clusters are then scraped. Both grapes are vinified separately, the maceration lasts about 20 days with temperature control. The assembly is carried out at the end of the fermentation, malolactic.

Tasting Notes: Very beautiful purple color, bright brilliant. Nose of fresh fruit, intense, on morello cherry, blackberry, red fruit coulis. The palate is fleshy, round, crisp, full of fruit, with matter, without hardness and silky tannins.

No 9 Oklahoma State Beats No 5 Notre Dame 37

Oklahoma State running back Jaylen Warren runs against Notre Dame during the second half of the Fiesta Bowl NCAA college football game, Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022, in Glendale, Ariz.

GLENDALE, Ariz. Oklahoma State was a step slow in the first half, appearing to be stuck in the desert sand while Notre Dame raced around the field.

A quick scoring drive just before halftime gave the No. 9 Cowboys a spark and they rode it one of the biggest victories in school history.

Led by Spencer Sanders, Oklahoma State pulled off the biggest comeback in Fiesta Bowl history, overcoming a 21-point deficit to beat No. 5 Notre Dame 37-35 on Saturday.

Sanders accounted for 496 yards and threw three of his four touchdown passes to Tay Martin, including a 9-yarder to cap a four-play, 75-yard drive just before halftime.

Us going down and scoring quickly just before the half, that gave us hope, Oklahoma State Mike Gundy said. That gave us a chance as coaches to say, Guys, were fine.

Oklahoma State came up inches short of securing a College Football Playoff spot in a loss to No. 6 Baylor at the Big 12 title game and fell into 21-point, first-half hole against Notre Dame .

Jack Coan led Notre Dames early charge while throwing for a Fiesta Bowl-record 509 yards and five touchdowns.

Sanders and Martin brought the Cowboys back.

One the game down to on, it was anybodys game and we just decided to pull a little harder, Sanders said.

Notre Dame still had a chance.

Where To Buy Alcohol In Every Province In Canada

Notre Dame has its own wine? Our expert tries all 5 ...

Buying booze for a night out can often be a huge chore. In Ontario, we have three options: the LCBO, the Beer Store, and the Wine Rack. A brewery, a winery, and a government owned liquor licensing bureau. This doesn’t give us a ton of freedom, especially when you compare us to our neighbours in Quebec, who can buy alcohol at grocery and convenience stores. But thanks to this handy map below, we can see just how different Ontario’s situation is from the rest of the country.

The map shows that we are the only province that gets our beer exclusively from the government, or beer and wine companies. In fact, we’re the only province that has to deal directly with a brewery and a winery to get our booze. Newfoundland, Quebec, and Alberta allow their residents to pick up booze from private retailers, while most of the rest of the country has private liquor stores to get alcohol from.

The only provinces with tougher alcohol laws than us are PEI and New Brunswick, where you can only get alcohol from government-owned stores, and Nunavut, where you apparently can only have booze sent to you by mail! It’s nice to know we don’t have it the worst in the country, but this map’s information definitely gives pause in the middle of all of this debate about the Beer Store’s monopoly over Ontario.

Things To Pack For A Trip To Montreal

  • The Lonely Planet Montreal and Quebec City guidebook for your trip. I used a Kindle version during my first few trips to Montreal. This was especially helpful for information about Old Montreal.
  • Backup Charging Bank for your cell phone since youll be using it as a camera, GPS system, and general travel genie.
  • A Camera since Montreal in fall is super photogenic. I use a mix of my Nikon D810 and my Samsung8 smartphone these days.
  • A Full Sized Travel Towel for anyone taking advantage of Montreals hostels or shared accommodations. This is the best travel towel in the world, and youll need it if you are staying in hostels or anywhere that requires you to bring your own towel.
  • Travel Insurance Policy information, because things happen on the road. I pay for World Nomads, and I happily recommend them. Its especially important to get travel insurance when in cities like Berlin where there are pickpockets that target tourists.

I have been a paying customer of World Nomads for travel insurance for two years, and I happily recommend them. Its especially important to get travel insurance when participating in outdoor activities. Even in the cities, though, youll be happy when youre able to replace your stuff if its lost or stolen.

Where To Stay In Montreal

Every time Ive been to Montreal, Ive been pleasantly surprised at how great a deal weve been able to get on quality hotel rooms. There are a ton of accommodation options in Montreal, and I think its much more affordable than other East Coast cities. Ill list a couple of my favorites, one for each of these price categories:

  • Budget: A room in a hostel, usually $20-25 USD per night for a dorm bed or under $50 for a double.
  • Mid-range: Around $50-80
  • Luxury: Around $100 per night or more

Budget: For a great budget-friendly hostel, you can stay in the dorms at M Montreal Hostel on Rue Saint-Andre. The rooms are modern and clean, but the real photogenic aspect of this hostel is the roof deck . Youll also love the funky common areas like the billiards table and the bar. Check the pricing, reviews, and availability here.

Mid-Range: For an affordable, yet luxurious stay in Montreal, I recommend the three-star Hotel Chateau de lArgoat. The rooms have an old-world charm look and feel, yet they are still rich in color. Just imagine tucking in by a beautiful fireplace complete with a warming fire for those cold Montreal nights. Check the pricing, reviews, and availability here.
