Reminiscent of a fine port, this bottle is heavy on fig, raisin, and brown sugar. This also has a profound chocolate note which could help explain why it pairs so well with actual chocolate.

What Makes A Wine Sweet

A very good sweet red wine. #finewine

Wine is made through the process of fermenting white or red grapes. The sugar content of grapes is sufficient for converting to alcohol with the addition of yeast. Grapes also provide the required amount of tannins, acids, and ester to produce a natural wine.

During the crushing process, the skins are removed to prevent discoloration in white wine and to reduce the level of tannins. With red wines, the skins remain giving this wine style its coloring, flavor, and extra tannins during fermentation.

Its during the fermentation stage of making wine that the sweetness level is most often determined. In simple wine jargon, sweet wine is the result of fermentation being halted before all the sugar content is converted into alcohol. This process is often managed by the winemaker producing certain types of wine.

While the sugar content is the main factor determining the sweetness of a wine, other components also contribute to how sweet red or white wines are. These include:

  • The acidity of the wine
  • Presence of tannins
  • Alcohol content

Different grapes have varied levels of sugar content. Winemakers select the grape varietal for the type of wine theyre producing whether its a red or white wine. So, wines made with grapes with a higher sugar content will naturally be sweeter. Grapes which have been harvested after theyve ripened on the vine will also be sweeter.

LIQUOR / Chloe Jeong

Sweet wine is one of the most overlooked and underrated styles of wine on the market. These wines provide thought-provoking and delicious drinking experiences, especially when paired with the right foods. Still, knowing where to start is key.

“There are so many different sweet wine styles, from light and golden to dark and jammy,” says Carrie Lyn Strong, sommelier and owner of Strong Wine Consulting, LLC. “The names dont always indicate if its white or red, so just ask an expert.” Jeff Harding, beverage director at New York’s Waverly Inn, agrees. “Asking the sommelier or salesperson is the most important,” he says. “Then, decide what you like in sweet wine. Acid? Get a sauternes or Tokaji. Nutty flavors? Get a tawny port.”

With that said, here are the best sweet wines for every serving situation out there. Whether youre a dessert wine aficionado or a sweet wine skeptic, weve got the perfect bottle for you.

Semi Sweet Red Wine Types

Semi-sweet, or medium sweet, red wines are some of the most popular across the globe. In particular, European countries tend to have semi-sweet reds on all occasions.

Here are the four most popular semi-sweet red wine types:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet is a full-bodied, oaky wine created in and named after a region in the south of France. It only has a moderate level of acid in wine, making it the perfect wine to drink with dinner.
  • Merlot. One of the most well-known red wines, merlot is a softer and more accessible red wine. It typically tastes like rich, ripe fruit and can have subtle earthy undertones.
  • Pinot noir. Pinot noir is the most popular red wine in the world and is also one of the oldest. Pinot is medium-bodied, with complex and rich flavors that can include cherry, raspberry, and spices. This is a great place to start for beginners and the complexity is also good for learning the ins and outs of smelling wine.
  • Zinfandel. Grown in many California vineyards, red zinfandels have a strong impact on the taste buds. They usually taste like a bold fruit jam with undertones of spices and a smoky finish.

Wine Sweetness Chart Indicators

Wines can be freely divided into sweet, semi-dry or dry. Normally, the amount of residual sugar of a wine depends on its level of sweetness. Remember that during fermentation, the natural sugar contained in the grapes is converted into alcohol by yeast. When fermentation stops before all the sugars are converted, the alcohol content is reduced and the wine becomes sweeter.

In table wines, the lower the alcohol content, the higher the residual sugar content and the sweeter the wine. There are exceptions to this rule, but it is a good general rule. This is one of the reasons why German Riesling is often found with an alcohol content between 8 and 12% GVA, with a significantly higher residual sugar content.
