The Company Abruptly Closed Its Manhattan Location Earlier This Month

On August 11, Trader Joes abruptly shuttered its Manhattan Wine Shop, which was located in Union Square and considered a staple by many . The closure has raised a lot of questions, and the conversation has grown complicated. Some, including some employees of the store, are claiming the Wine Shop crew was about to vote to unionize and Trader Joes allegedly shut down the store in retaliation. Heres what we know so far.

So as of now, it is not clear where, or whether, the Trader Joes Wine Shop will reemerge, or if it will be a unionized store when and if it does. What is clear is that for now, New Yorkers will need to take a road trip to get their hands on Two Buck Chuck.

Trader Joe’s Shuttered Nyc Wine Store To Snuff Out Union Drive Workers Say

The abrupt closure of a popular Trader Joe’s wine store in New York City came just days before its 30 employees were planning to call a union election. Workers had been organizing for months and were ready to go public with the campaign, they told CBS MoneyWatch.

But on August 11, a few days before the planned announcement, the grocery chain suddenly shuttered the location, only informing affected workers of the closure at 12:01 a.m. that very day. Some employees learned that the store was permanently closing its doors when they showed up to work in the morning.

“I found out because I woke up to a million missed calls and texts,” said Robert Bradlea, an employee who worked for four years at the Trader Joe’s wine store and one of the leaders behind the union drive.

“That day was kind of a blur waking up, being punched in the gut and drifting through the next hours, hearing how upset my coworkers were, hearing surprise from people who were used to shopping there,” Bradlea said, adding that more than two-thirds of the workers were in favor of forming a union.

The closing “doesn’t make sense to me, unless they didn’t want to risk a successfully organized store winning a union vote,” Bradlea said. “They are hoping to make an example of us so that other people don’t follow suit.”

In addition to these private-label brands, Trader Joes is also said to purchase most of the other brands they sell in bulk, which also helps keep the price down.

Everything You Need To Know About The Closing Of The Trader Joes Wine Store

On August 11, Trader Joes abruptly closed its popular New York wine store. The company posted a note on the East 14th Street outlets door informing customers of the closing, noting that it intends to explore another location and that employees will be paid for shifts through August 28 and given opportunities to transfer.

The suddenness of the closing immediately raised questions. Why shut down a busy store in a good location? This branch in particular has plenty of fans, including some who go out of their way to shop there. One friend of Grub Street travels from his apartment in the South Bronx to buy wine there.

In the days since the closing was announced, however, more information has come out . Heres what you need to know:

Employees were trying to unionize. Workers tell the Huffington Post they were mere days away from going public with their union campaign. One employee named Robert Bradlea tells reporter Dave Jamieson that the closing took him completely by surprise and that he believes the company is hoping this dissuades other workers. Former employee Jonathan Reuning theorized the closing was totally to stop the union effort before it can begin. Anthony Small, who supported the union, told the Huffington Post that the suddenness of the closing doesnt make good business sense.

Economic Exclusivity And Gentrification

In spite of being known as a “neighborhood store” with affordable options, Trader Joe’s locations are mostly in well-off neighborhoods. In 2022, the typical Trader Joe’s customer was a married person living in an urban area, between 25 and 44 years old, earning at least $80,000. When deciding where to open locations, the chain typically looks for areas where the median household income is over $100,000. In effect, this systemically contributes to the “food desert” phenomenon, where residents in certain areas may have limited access to nutritious food.

Conversely, Trader Joe’s has also faced opposition for contributing to gentrification. Between 1997 and 2014, Zillow found that homes grow more rapidly in value if they are closer to a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods, with such homes consistently being worth more than the mean U.S. home. In 2014, Trader Joe’s agreed to halt plans to open a store in a historically black neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, following protests led by the Portland African American Leadership Forum. The organization objected to the $2.4 million subsidy offered by the city to Trader Joe’s and emphasized that they were not against Trader Joe’s, but instead were pushing back against the city’s history of displacing African Americans. In 2015, along with a proposal to build new affordable housing, the city announced that a different store, Natural Grocers, would be built on the vacant lot.

Trader Joes Closed Down A Wine Shop Days Before Workers Planned To Unionize

trader joe

The company’s union busting has reached a new low.

In August, Trader Joes abruptly closed down a wine shop in New York just days before workers were set to unionize. The store was a neighborhood staple and the only Trader Joes Wine Shop in the country. We took to the streets to see how workers and customers reacted. Read the full transcript below:

Maura McHugh: Does anybody miss the wine store?

Customer: I miss the store terribly, daily customer, and I think it should come back.

Jonathan Reuning: Did you hear what happened?

Customer: Well, I read this letter and it seems like they must have shut it down so they could open one in a higher end neighborhood.

Jonathan: What would you say if I told you it was because we were unionizing?

: A Trader Joes in Union Square abruptly closed just days before its employees were planning to call a union election.

Jonathan: Ah, its so good though its been a while since Ive had this. The wine store is really interesting you use all your food and beverage knowledge.

Maura: Which I love, Im kind of a nerd with that. And we passed on our knowledge to the customers. which they really appreciated. And the fact that it had been there for, what, 15 years.

Rab Bradlea: A group of people who had known each other for a long time, who worked together for a long time.

Anthony Small: And they do go above and beyond. Im sorry. I love the people I work with. It would be irresponsible not to stand up for them.

Is Mirin Rice Wine

Mirin is a Japanese cooking wine that is made from rice. It has a sweet flavor and is used in many Japanese dishes.

The seasoning and glaze agent, known as a mirin , is also known as sweet rice wine. When you use malt in cooking, it tenderizes the ingredients and adds a mild sweetness to the overall flavor of the dish. Furthermore, it masks the smell of fish and seafood, allowing the flavors to soak in better. There is one significant distinction between mirin and Hon-mirin: in mirin, sake is used instead of shochu. Mirin-like condiments, which have a similar taste, are a cheap alternative to Mirin. Because Hon mirin contains more alcohol, it can be kept in a dark, cool place for up to 3 months. Mirin can be replaced with sake or sugar, but it will not be the same as it is now.

Mirin can be replaced by dry white wine or sweet marsala wine. If you are unable to consume alcohol during your cooking, you can buy Honteri Mirin from Mizkan. Mirin can be used in a variety of sauces, seasonings, marinades, broths, glazes, and other dishes. This recipe is best served with a variety of fish, meat, and seafood dishes, as well as tofu and vegetables. In contrast to vermouth, sake is frequently added during the cooking process to evaporate some of the alcohol, making it possible to treat it untreated.

Trader Joes Workers Decided To Unionize The Company Abruptly Closed Their Store

TRADER JOE’S Holiday Favorites are Back!

Labor Reporter, HuffPost

Workers at the Trader Joes Wine Shop in Manhattan spent the last four months laying the groundwork to unionize their store. A small organizing committee met regularly to discuss strategy around building support to join the United Food and Commercial Workers union, and they planned to go public with their effort the week of Aug. 15.

But in the early morning hours of Aug. 11, Trader Joes abruptly informed them it was closing the popular wine shop, its only one in New York City.

Robert Rab Bradlea, a worker at the store and member of the committee, was blindsided when he woke up to texts about the closure last Thursday. Like three other workers from the store interviewed by HuffPost, Bradlea said he sees only one logical reason for it.

Theyre hoping this dissuades other workers from doing the same thing weve done, the five-year Trader Joes veteran said.

Bradlea said conversations with coworkers had led the committee to believe there were at least 22 yes votes among the 30 or so workers they expected would be eligible to unionize. They planned to have supporters sign union cards this week and quickly submit them to the National Labor Relations Board by Friday to petition for an election.

Trader Joes did not respond to inquiries from HuffPost on Wednesday regarding the closure.

Is Alcohol Cheaper At Trader Joes

Trader Joes does have lower prices on beer and wine, and liquor where available compared to most alcoholic beverage stores in the same areas. And their private label alcohol is significantly cheaper.

A bottle of that might be $20 elsewhere can typically be found at Trader Joes for $15. So, you might be wondering why they are cheap.

So how cheap? Its very cheap when you consider that a bottle of one of its most popular wines, Charles Shaw, goes for less than $3! It practically goes for a song. Its available as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay, in red and white varieties.

Its so popular, more than a billion bottles have been sold.

Its being made for TJ, under a contract, by Bronco Wine. Bronco Wine employs a variety of strategies to keep its overhead very low. This is why TJ gets to sell the wine at such rates. What of Vodka? Vodka at Costco goes for $12.99, while Gin at TJ sells for $11.99.

But I used to regularly buy my tequila, bourbon, and vodka at TJs when I lived in California.

And, for example, I used to buy Puerto Vallarta Tequila Blanco in a 750ml bottle for under 15 bucks. These days that same bottle sells elsewhere for $28.

These days, they mostly sell their private label tequila, but the prices will almost always be better on all alcohol at TJs.
