Though Charleston has a glut of noteworthy accommodations, theres one that particularly stands out its winning combination of a convenient location, dazzling design, and unforgettable amenities that go beyond even the most reputable and luxurious Charleston hotels.

Opened in early 2019 by local hospitality veteran Michael Bennett, Hotel Bennett which is managed in collaboration with Salamander Hotels & Resorts boasts a prime address overlooking Marion Square on bustling King Street. And though the stately, nine-story Italian palazzo-style property with 179 guest rooms and suites seamlessly fits in with the historic city center, it was years in the making and fraught with legal disputes along the way namely, over the hotels proposed height. Thankfully, matters eventually got resolved, and business proceeded as usual.

Despite being open for just a few years, two of them during the pandemic, Hotel Bennett has emerged as one of the citys top places to stay. For starters: the design is nothing short of jaw-dropping, thanks to the efforts of Atlanta-based Design Continuum, Inc . Even just stepping into the entry rotunda which is adorned with hand-painted murals depicting colonial Charles Towne’s 18th-century harbor, gleaming white marble, and a grand double-sided staircase sets the tone for what guests can experience at Hotel Bennett.

Camellias: The Ladies Bar

Back in 2016 when we first learned that Hotel Bennett would have an all-pink and flower-themed bar called Camellias, we were a bit, err, confused, about the bandying about of the term ladies bar.

We toured the space yesterday and yes, its still so pink even Molly Ringwald would pause, but it seems the troubling phrase has, since inception to creation, left the zeitgeist. And yall ladies and gents have to see this bad boy in person. Whether you like flowers, pink, or crystals matters not. Its a sight to behold.

Inspired by a Fabergé jewel box, the oval shaped room features four art panels that depict the camellia flower, plus reflective finishes including an etched-mirror ceiling and strings of crystals cascading from a chandelier.

Camellias was set for traditional afternoon tea when we visited, which is a service theyll be offering Thurs.-Sat. from 2-4 p.m. The tea will include sandwiches, scones, and pastries, as well as curated Champagne and tea cocktail selections.

Camellias will open as a bar at 4 p.m. daily with cocktails like the Pink Perfection made with St. George vodka, Mad Hatter tea, lemon replacement, and Champagne agitated bubbles. The food menu will feature caviar, clearly plus diced tuna and beet tartare with avocado and citrus and pastry chef Remy Funfrocks Camellias cake, made with cheesecake mousse, strawberry marmalade, and lemon Madeleine sponge.

Afternoon Tea At Camellias In Hotel Bennett Charleston Sc

Last week in Charleston, my mom and I decided we wanted to check out the new Hotel Bennet on King Street. After perusing their website for a few minutes, I stumbled across the page for their Champagne Bar called Camellias. I noticed they offered an afternoon tea three times a week, so my mom got on Open Table and booked us a reservation for Valentines Day. They only have 5-6 tables, so a reservation is required!!

  • The Hand Painted Alcove

This place was gorgeous!! Everything was pink and glamorous. There was a giant chandelier hanging in the center of the room that was an amazing focal point. The pink marble tables were actually made from marble that was taken from the Charleston Library that previously stood where the hotel is now, which was a cool little history fact that I loved learning about. The waitress also pointed out that the little alcoves were hand painted!

We were seated right when they opened at 2 PM. The server came over and explained the how the whole tea situation worked. We each got to pick from 12 different tea options, and we both chose Earl Gray. We each got individual little tea pots and they brought out a timer so we could time how long we wanted our tea to seep. Our server also explained that some people get two teas to split between two people one to go with the savory bites and one to go with the sweet treats.

Hotel Bennett has two bars that are open to the public. Its rooftop bar, Fiat Lux, serves everything from “spiked snowballs” to avocado toast. Provided.

After more than two decades of preparation, Hotel Bennett‘s luxury rooms and suites are now open for guests.

Perhaps more important for Lowcountry locals, though, is that the bars inside the palatial downtown lodging are also open for business and open to the public.

The hotel first opened its doors at 3 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon, and, by 5 p.m., almost every seat in both venues had already been claimed.

Next to the lobby, every pink marble table was surrounded by guests holding champagne flutes and wine glasses, and, upstairs, guests sipping cans of beer and cocktails alternated between chatting around the bar, taking photos from the rooftop and peeking at the closed-off pool, which was filled to the brim and lit from below with colorful lights.

Camellias, a champagne bar that emanates pink and sparkle, is located just to the left of the main lobby.

The menu the cover of which, of course, is pink features cocktails with names like “The Debutante” and “Pink Perfection,” along with selections of champagne and rosé, most of which much be purchased by the bottle.

Fiat Luxe: The Rooftop Pool And Bar

Tea Time at Camellias at Hotel Bennett | Charleston, SC | TRAVEL VLOG

The Fiat Luxe rooftop bar and pool draws its name from the Latin phrase for let there be light. Facing toward the Charleston Harbor, the rooftop hangout offers perhaps the clearest view of the peninsula weve ever been privy to. That also means a front row seat to eyesore cruise ships, but thats what cabanas are for!

In the coming weeks, the cabanas and pool area will be open in the evenings to the general public by reservation, including for private parties. Until then, dont pop into the 35-foot pool without a room card, OK?

The Fiat Lux bar will be open daily at 11 a.m. for any and everyone, though. When the weathers nice the bars doors open to a wrap-around terrace. Sip on cocktails designed by hotel mixologist Steven Huddleston like The Swindler, made with Belvedere wild berry vodka, Combier triple sec, simple syrup, lemon acid replacement, and activated charcoal and the Old Fashioned Revolution, featuring Makers Mark, Templeton Rye, Boulard Calvados, Hennessey cognac, rich simple syrup, Bittermans mole bitters, and Angostura bitters. There will also be special bottled cocktails designed for easeful poolside sippin. Bites at the bar, developed by the hotels exec chef Michael Sichel, will include snapper ceviche, roasted beets and feta, and Greek style lamb kabobs.
