Darwine Likes This Wine: 96 Points
May 19, 2021 – opened up in about 45 minutes. Beautiful nose of clove, dark fruit dominated by black cherry and a touch of leather. Taste had black cherry, cassis and blackberry and some mineral touch. The tannins were soft but fully integrated for a long fish and a touch of leather and chocolate. This wine has a lot of life to go and will only get better.

Joseph Phelps Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Out of stock
Blended of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc, sourced from six vineyards, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a medium to deep garnet-purple color and nose of red and black currants, black raspberries and mulberries with hints of pencil shavings, cinnamon stick, cloves and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has great freshness, with the vibrant, open-for-business fruit well supported by ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with good length.
The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon clearly shows the struggles of the vintage. Unusually dark, jammy and powerful, the 2015 is very ripe and at times alcoholic. It will be interesting to see how the wine reacts to the final period of its aging in barrel.
Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard
Winemaker NotesThe 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon from Backus Vineyard is brimming with violet, cinnamon stick, graphite, spice box and cedar notes followed by luscious blackberry jam and dusty cocoa powder. An intensely concentrated wine with seamless tannin and a long, lingering finish.
Winemaking DataEach block remains separate during picking and fermentation. The complexity of the Backus Vineyard can be highlighted through the fruit and depth found in the North and Plateau blocks paired with the structure and concentration in the steep hillside fruit grown in the South block.
Vintage NotesThe 2015 Napa Valley growing season experienced dry, mild winter and spring temperatures similar to the prior three growing seasons. By mid-March all blocks at Backus were 50% through bud break, followed by a normal period of bloom. May temperatures were unseasonably cool, but summer months were consistently warm, with heat spikes in September and October, creating conditions for a low-yielding vintage of high quality fruit from one of the earliest and most condensed harvests on record. On September 7th the winery?s first Napa Valley red grapes of the season were picked at the Backus North block and all Backus blocks were picked by September 15th. Small berries and loose clusters led to intensely concentrated, rich flavors and full-bodied wines from the 2015 vintage.

Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Winemaker NotesA classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with inviting violet, dark fruit, tobacco, subtle baking spice and earthy dried herb aromatics. The palate is filled with expressive black cherry, blackberry and dark plum, hints of spice box and sweet vanilla bean. A focused, concentrated wine with youthful energy and freshness nimbly balanced by supple tannin structure and finesse.
Winemaking DataThe wine was aged for eighteen months in 48% new oak and 52% older French and American oak barrels before bottling. The coopers included Ermitage, François Frères, Demptos , Canton , Dargaud Jaegle, Orion and Taransaud.
Vintage NotesIn 2019, bud break occurred around the same time as 2018 but was delayed compared to our historical averages due to cold, saturated soils from the wet winter. May was cold with an unusual amount of rainfall which delayed bloom in some areas. Canopy management was key in 2019 because of vigorous canopies and moderate temperatures leading to less stress on the vines. July was cooler than average, but August and September warmed to push ripening ahead. Harvest weather patterns remained dry and fruit quality was excellent with well-developed flavors and structure.2019 Cabernet Sauvignon marks the first vintage to include fruit from the new Joseph Phelps vineyard named El Venadito, located in the Oak Knoll District, just south of the winerys Yountville Vineyard.

Leather, tobacco and smoky char define the opening of this full-bodied, rich wine, blended with 15% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc. Woody and structured, its fruit leans dark and plummy, ending on a touch of dark chocolate. Virginie Boone
