How to Make a Margarita (and 5 Mistakes to Avoid) | Bottle Service

Ah, the Margarita A simple mix of tequila, lime juice and triple sec, this piquant, thirst-quenching cocktail is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, and a celebration of its base spirit to boot.

Served straight up in a fancy cocktail glass, or down and on the rocks, this is a drink for any occasion, from relaxed alfresco sundowners at home to parties and gatherings.

One word about the recipe, however . While the traditional cocktail calls for triple sec to be used as the modifier, a twist on the classic has become so popular especially amongst bartenders that it is usurping the original recipe.

This twist is called a Tommys Margarita, and it calls for the triple sec to be switched out for agave syrup instead. The richness of flavour of the syrup really amps up the agave flavours in the tequila, producing a moreish, well-rounded cocktail that leaves you clamouring for more.

Percent Agave Tequila Is Your Best Option By Far

Isle says you have two choices for your tequila. Theres basic, inexpensive tequilas made with a mixture of grain spirits and agave spirits , but theyre typically colored with caramel coloring and grain spirits arent very tasty, either. Plus, the bottle Ray picks up includes natural flavorswhat are those natural flavors? The only flavors in there should be tequila, he quips.

The second and best option is 100 percent blue agave tequila. He gives 1800 as an example, which is made entirely from an agave plantits pure tequila and tastes much better.

How to Make the Perfect Margarita

We couldnt compile a list of wine margaritas without throwing a bone to our red wine lovers. Turns out white wines tend to do better as a replacement for tequila, but when used WITH tequila, red wine can really create a margarita like no other. Its sweet, its tangy, its unique, and its going to win you any margarita competition you enter. Start by mixing up a regular pitcher of margaritas by using simple syrup, 5 ounces tequila, 3 ounces of triple sec, and fresh lime juice . Stir or blend thoroughly and pour into salt-rimmed glasses. Next, hold a spoon rounded side up over the drink, and slowly pour in our Vintner Red Blend. You want to pour enough to create about a 1/4 inch of red atop the green. The colors stay separated so long as you pour slow and controlled, and your guests stay impressed.

How To Make Wine At Home

Have you ever wanted to make homemade wine? Here’s how.

In theory, making wine is very simple. Yeast meets grape juice in an environment that allows fermentation. Just nature being nature. No doubt wine was first discovered by happy accident thousands of years ago: Natural yeasts, blowing in the wind, settled down upon a bunch of squashed grapes, whose juice was pooling in the shaded bowl of a rock; soon after, some lucky passerby stops and stoops down for a taste…and likes what she’s discovered.

From there, the process of winemaking will be refined, as you can imagine, and the environment carefully controlled, to the point where winemaking becomes both science and art.

And DIY home winemaking? Well, it probably falls somewhere between the curious stone-age wanderer and the modern vintner who applies artful science to the process. Let’s take a look.

Basic recipes combine tequila, triple sec, and fresh lime juice to create a tangy, earthy, and slightly sweet drink. White Wine Margarita Is A Fresh Take On A Classic

Theres something special about a margarita. Lime juice, salt and bright orange create a refreshing combination. Sometimes, however, the pungent flavor of tequila can overwhelm that freshness. The alcoholic potency of tequila can make margaritas dangerous to drink.

This White Wine Margarita takes care of both those problems. Instead of tequila, it uses white wine and triple sec for a milder taste and lower alcohol level. This adult punch offers a fresh, sophisticated take on the famous cocktail.

The History Of The Margarita And How To Make It Right

    White Wine Margaritas Cocktail

Its hard to say definitively who created the margarita, Mexicos classic Tequila sour that has become one of the most beloved cocktails in the world. Stories of its origin are as numerous as the variations of the drink.

One story claims that the drink was created in 1938, as Mexican restaurant owner Carlos Herrera mixed it for gorgeous Ziegfeld showgirl Marjorie King. Supposedly, Tequila was the only alcohol that King would abide, so Herrera added lime juice and salt.

Other claims include that Texas socialite Margaret Sames mixed the first drink at a house party in Mexico during 1948. Or maybe it was named for actress Rita Hayworth during a gig in Tijuana in the 1940s.

In his book, Imbibe, cocktail historian David Wondrich agrees that the margarita was invented during the above timeframe. He says that the drink evolved from The Daisy, a classic cocktail popular at the time that mixed alcohol, citrus juice and grenadine, and served over shaved ice.

A Frozen Margarita Requires Different Proportions

As tempting as it is to dump your “on the rocks” margarita in a blender with tons of ice, dont. Isle says a frozen margarita recipe requires different proportionsfor each drink, youll want two ounces of tequila, one ounce of Cointreau, one ounce of simple syrup, and one and 1/4 ounces of lime juice, which is slightly more than the on-the-rocks recipe. In the video above, Isle makes enough of the mixture for two drinks, and then combines it with two and half cups of ice in the blender. After blending, rub the edge of the glass with lime, salt the rim, and voila! Youve got a perfect frozen margarita too.

Pro tip: Pre-mix your margarita mix ahead of time and chill overnight, so its ready to go in the blender the next day.
