How To Find The Best Bottles Of Low

There are a few key specifications you can look for to identify low-carb wine.

  • Alcohol by volume : The alcohol level is required to be listed, and can be found on the bottle as “ABV,”or alcohol by volume. For a low-carb wine, aim for 13 percent or less.
  • Residual sugars: Low-sugar wines are naturally low in carbs because sugar is a type of carb. Finding residual sugars can be a bit more challenging to decipher compared to ABV. The metric most likely will be listed on a wine’s website on the “tech sheet” . Low-carb wines will have less than 10 grams per liter .
  • Dry taste: Even if you can’t find the exact amount of residual sugars, you can use your taste buds as a guide to find low-carb wines. Wines range from bone dry to very sweet, and those on the drier end naturally contain less sugar.

“The drier the wine, the lower the sugar content. Varieties like Champagne, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot grigio, merlot, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, and Malbec generally contain somewhere between 2 to 4 grams of carbs per 5-ounce glass,” says Lauren Harris-Pincus, MS, RDN, founder of and author of The Protein-Packed Breakfast Club.

“Sweeter wines like port, moscato, plum, and other dessert wines will contain much more sugar, so if you are seeking a low-carb wine, those are probably not your best choices.”

Cut The Carbs While Drinking The Wines You Love

Just because youre watching your carb count doesnt mean you have to miss out on all the fun. Remember to limit full-bodied reds and sweet wines, and opt for lighter-bodied reds such as Pinot Noir. For the best low-carb, high flavor experience, choose dry wines such as sparkling brut or Sauvignon Blanc.;

And dont forget that as with so many things in life, moderation is key in this case, a glass of wine a week. By making a few adjustments and knowing what to look for, you can still enjoy the wine you love and achieve your health goals.

Is Wine Keto Look For These Measurements

Your target should be a wine with a low alcohol content of 13.5% ABV or lower. It should feature a residual sugar measurement thats in the single-digits of grams per liter. A cabernet sauvignon is your best bet when looking for a very dry red wine, and wines like chardonnay and riesling will often fit the bill among white wines. This should offer you wines with less than 1 gram of carbs per serving, and that keeps the calories around 110 or less per glass .

Sparkling wines also tend to have low residual sugar. If youre having trouble finding this information, you can look for a tech sheet. These are easy to find at most wine sellers online. If youre in person, most shops should be able to supply them.

What If I Cant Find A Tech Sheet

The Low Carb Wine You

If you cant find a technical sheet, or if the residual sugar is not listed, here are a few tips:

  • Cheap wine usually has residual sugar. Its safe to assume that most affordable wines from the US contain some residual sugar, perhaps anywhere from 215 g/L. There are, of course, excellent exceptions to this rule so look for more information first.
  • Drink slightly better wine. If you spend a little more on a bottle of wine, say around $1525, producers tend to feature less residual sugar . Grapes are higher quality so the wines dont need sweetness to taste fruity.
  • Drink slightly less. Even at 15 g/L RS, a wine will only add about 7.5 sugar calories which isnt much! Like with all things, moderation is key!

    A few weeks ago I wrote about whether it is a good idea to drink alcohol on a low carb diet. I mentioned various kinds of alcoholic drinks and their carb content for a typical serving. White wine is definitely not one of the worst offenders, but you can reduce the carb content further by mixing it with zero carb soda. It makes a longer drink, and for half the carbs of a regular glass of wine!

    If you have fresh lime, you could squeeze some lime juice and add a twist of peel or a slice of lime to the drink. Or, if speed is of the essence, using bottled lime juice is just fine!

    Can You Stay Healthy While Drinking Wine

    While some research shows that alcohol consumption can increase weight gain, keep in mind that the odd glass of wine is not going to completely ruin your low-carb or ketogenic diet.

    The key is to be mindful of what youre drinking and what youre eating. One survey found that people who drink alcohol dont just ingest the calories from their drinks they also consume extra calories while drinking.

    That said, studies show that drinking red wine in moderation is good for your health, particularly heart health. When it comes to alcohol consumption, drinking in moderation means a glass of wine per week.

    While sweet wines and full-bodied wines are wonderful, its probably best to save these for special occasions and opt for lighter-bodied options with low sugar content.

    Wonderful Wine Co Malvasia Bianca

    Dry Farm Wines: Low-carb/keto friendly wine

    The wines in the Wonderful Wine Co collection are just about as healthy as it gets: low-sugar, low-carb, low-sulfite, vegan and made from grapes that are organic and farmed sustainably without pesticides. And, I might add, they come in highly Instagrammable bottles.

    The Malvasia Bianca deserves a shoutout, though, and not just because it only has 0.03 grams of sugar this rare crossbreed is a white wine made in the style of a red, resulting in an unusual orange color. Bolder than a typical white but mellower than your standard red, its ultra-versatile. When you cant choose between a white or red, its the best of both worlds: Refreshing enough for a warm summer night, but with enough body and acidity to stand up to a wide variety of foods.

    The Wonderful Wine Cos lineup also includes a rose, Spanish syrah, and French white blend, all of which can be purchased in a three-, six-, or 12-pack. Or, if youre feeling indecisive, you can try The Starter Pack to sample several.

    Will Drinking Sugar Free Wines Prevent Hangovers

    There are many theories about what really causes a hangover, and those reasons are different for everyone based on factors including body type, gender, age, lifestyle, food consumed or not while drinking and more. While we know that consuming too much of any alcoholic beverage can cause a miserable hangover headache, the specific sugar content in a wine could also be to blame. What is it about certain wines that make the next morning miserable? One thing that may be a contributing factor is the level of residual sugar.

    Drinking wines with a higher concentration of natural or added sugars before bedtime can be problematic for some, especially if enough water is not consumed at the same time. As our bodies try to flush out both the alcohol and sugar as we sleep, it pulls water from throughout our bodies, including our head. This dehydration is what causes a pounding headache. According to WebMD: Alcohol makes you dehydrated and makes blood vessels in your body and brain expand. That gives you your headache.; For every alcoholic drink you have, your body can expel up to four times as much liquid. The diuretic effect of alcohol and the dehydration it causes contribute to the discomfort of a hangover, explains Jim Woodford, PhD, a forensic chemist specializing in drugs and alcohol.

    Why Is It Hard To Find Low Carb Wine In Australia

    Unfortunately, its not as easy as looking at the nutritional label to determine the nutritional information of your chosen wine.;

    You see, while most food products have nutrition information on their labels or packaging, wines do not. Its because winemakers are not required by law to share nutritional information in Australia .;

    Even those winemakers who share nutritional figures may not be lab testing their wine, and the macronutrient split can vary from batch to batch.;

    However, there are still ways to gauge if a given wine is low carb or not. It all depends on what type of wine it is certain varieties tend to be much lower in carbs than others, but its not an exact method and it can be easy to make the wrong choices based on assumptions.;

    Tip: dedicated sellers such as The Only Keto Wines Co carry out independent lab testing to confirm the carb count of all wines they stock. If you want real certainty about the macros in your wine, this online store is a great choice and you can use the code KETOLICIOUS to get $20 off a 6 or 12 pack.;

    Why Dryness Matters For Keto Wine

    Low Carb Wine Tonight? This Keto Wine Impressed Me ...

    A good keto wine should contain very little residual sugar. In the wine-making process, yeast consumes the grape sugar to produce alcohol. That process might be stopped early to create wines with a bit of residual sugar left over. A lot of wines have some residual sugar because it complements and blends into the taste well. A very dry wine is one where that process is allowed to continue, and so it has very little residual sugar.

    Be aware that dry is also used to describe a taste quality not all wines that are described as dry cut this sugar down that much. They can still have as much as 30 grams of residual sugar per liter.

    The most reliable option is to purchase dedicated keto wines online. With a more varied selection available, there is more chance youll be able to find something youll truly enjoy.

    Low Carb Wine: More Calories But Less Sugar

    If youre counting calories, choose a lower alcohol-by-volume content. This is because wines with high alcohol content are typically higher in calories.;

    However, if youre not counting calories, and only grams of carbohydrates, you get to enjoy a better buzz. Wine with higher alcohol content has less residual sugar.

    This fact can be confusing. After all, isnt alcohol a sugar? So wouldnt it make sense that more alcohol equals more sugar?;

    Not exactly.;

    You see, during the fermentation process in wine making, the yeast eats up much of the sugar.

    Wines with a higher alcohol by volume content ferment longer. Wine starts off as a high-carb beverage. But during fermentation, the microscopic organisms eat most of the fructose and glucose in the grapes.;

    Dry wines are essentially low carb wines. A dry red wine contains only about a gram of residual sugar.

    Low carb red wines are about 14-15% alcohol by volume. Red wine thats 13% alcohol by volume or lower will be higher in residual sugar.

    How Many Carbs In Red Wine Vs White Wine

    Strict calorie counters will probably go for white wine over red. Thats because white wine usually has less alcohol per volume than red wine, which means less calories.

    Remember: the lower the alcohol percentage, the higher the residual sugar. Thats the amount of sugar thats left over after the fermentation process.

    But are red wine carbs lower than those in white wine?

    Regardless if the wine is red or white, a dry wine will have almost no residual sugar. In general, the cheaper the bottle of wine, the more residual sugar it will have. If you buy a decent bottle of wine in the $15-20 range, it will likely have very little residual sugar.

    There are exceptions to the rule, with port wine being a big exception. A serving of port wine can have 10 grams or more of residual sugar.

    Another generalization with wine is that full-bodied varieties are higher in sugar.

    Pure The Winery Zero Sugar White Wine
