If you need to know how to remove a red wine stain, youre probably in a panic trying to remember that killer technique you heard someone rave about at the last wine tasting party. That technique was the result of a study of red wine stain removers conducted in 2001 by the University of California, Davis. The eight stain removers included in the study were as follows:
The procedure: They soaked swatches of all-white fabric in red wine. Then, after 2 minutes or 24 hours, the red wine stain was treated and the swatch laundered in cold water approximately three hours after the treatment. After drying, the darkness of the stain was measured using a Minolta Colorimeter in order to obtain very precise measures of residual stain. Tests were done in triplicate to validate the results, and treated fabrics were compared against controls of both stained and unstained laundered fabric swatches.
How Do I Get Red Wine Out Of A Tablecloth
Red wine is a tough stain to remove. If you catch it in time, it can often be successfully treated. The problem is that wine stains tend to happen at a party or social event when you simply cant drop everything to treat the stain before it dries and sets.
For one, the stain may already be dry by the time anyone notices. Before you know it, a drip down the side of a glass caused by a misdirected pour can find its way around the bottom of a glass, leaving a lovely red ring on the tablecloth. To make matters worse, guests may not openly mention a stain to their host out of embarrassment or sheepishness.
Its also overly dramatic to ask all guests to remove their plates, glasses, cutlery, serving platters, etc. from the table while you swap the dirty tablecloth for a clean one, especially if the stain is small. Doing so would probably break at least seven rules of party etiquette.
If you catch the stain when its still fresh, blot from the top with a dry light-coloured absorbent cloth, make sure the table underneath is OK, but dont let it ruin your party.
Once the guests have left for home, treat the tablecloth with an Oxy product, then wash according to package directions. If the stain is still there, repeat the treatment before allowing the cloth to dry.
As in so many cases, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Dont use a cherished antique tablecloth at an event where red wine will be served, or where spills are likely to happen.

Carpet fibers can be either natural or synthetic. The major synthetic yarns are nylon, olefin, acrylic and polyester. Wool is the natural fiber used in carpet. Cotton and other natural fibers are widely used in rugs. Nylon is the most common carpet material in the United States.
Nylon was designed to be a synthetic substitute for silk. It has a chemical structure similar to silk, so wine stains can bind to its fibers. - First of all, you need to act fast here – the second you see the red wine spill – grab a clean paper towel and blot the stain to soak up all the excess wine.
- Secondly, take several spoons of table salt and generously pour it directly on the stain. Cover the stain completely.
- Leave the salt-covered stain for as much as needed – until it will start to absorb the wet red wine stain. Let the stain dry completely.
- Finally, vacuum all the dry salt. At this point, if the process was successful, the salt should have sucked up the red wine stain.

Dish soap or hydrogen peroxide wont work on their own but, together, theyre a potent combination. The experts at La Crema recommend mixing one part dishwashing liquid and three parts hydrogen peroxide. Apply it to the stain with a sponge or cloth, then let it sit 20 minutes to an hour. Blot clean and repeat if necessary. This is one of those hydrogen peroxide uses you may not have known about, but definitely comes in handy in a pinch.
