Which Wines Have The Lowest Alcohol Content

Now for the other side of the equation. These lighter wines can be appealing if youre trying to watch your diet or only want a mild buzz to lull you in the middle of a movie.

As explored above, Moscato is on the lower rung when it comes to alcohol content. Dont expect a bottle to go beyond 4% or 5% ABV, though some might creep up to 9%. Following close behind are some of the lighter white wines, such as Italys Pinot Grigio and Austrias Grüner Veltliner.

Although not as low as sparkling wine, rosé is frequently marketed as a cute and casual wine for a reason. This wine type tends to hover below the strongest wines while not being quite as watered down as your average Moscato.

Is Rice Cooking Wine Contain Alcohol

How High Alcohol Content Wine Is Made

Before we go any further with the discussion, heres a bit more background for the novices reading this as grapes grow on their vines, they collect more and more sugar. Grapes that grow in cooler climates will have less sugar and tend to make for more acidic and lower alcohol wines, while those grown in warmer climates will make more fruit-forward, full-bodied wines. Also, the longer grapes stay on the vines, the more sugar they contain. This translates into wines with robust fruity flavor. It also means higher alcohol content in the wine.

There is a catch though. The yeast that is used to ferment the grape juice is a living organism. Even if you grow and crush the sweetest grapes, the yeast can only live so long. Most natural yeast will be killed by an alcohol content of around 13 – 15%. This means they can’t keep converting sugars into alcohol. To get the highest alcohol content wines, the winemaker needs to work outside of natural fermentation.

Definitive Guide To Wine Alcohol Content (Infographic)

Although weve arrived at our simple answer, the reality is that not all comparisons are going to fall into this convenient average. So how does one solve the one-bottle-of-wine-equals-how-many-beers quandary with variable alcohol contents?

Lets take a look at some examples to find out!

Ready to test your math skills?

First, we need to determine the units of alcohol for each of the drinks were comparing. This done by multiplying the total volume of the drink by its ABV, and then dividing the result by 1,000.

The equation looks like this:

ABV x Volume ÷ 1,000 = Number of Alcohol Units

Lets begin with some lower ABV wine like the Chateau Grand Traverse 2018 Late Harvest Riesling compared to a lighter ABV beer like Miller Lite.

The Late Harvest Riesling has an ABV of 10.4% and a volume of 750 ml, meaning it has 7.8 units of alcohol per bottle.

Well use a standard 12 oz. can of Miller Lite for this comparison. The Miller Lite has an ABV of 4.2% and a volume of 354 ml, giving it 1.5 units of alcohol per can.

To determine how many cans you would drink to equal one bottle we divide the Riesling alcohol units by the Miller Lite alcohol units!

Riesling 7.8 ¸ Miller Lite 1.5 = 5.2 Miller Lites in a bottle of our Late Harvest Riesling.

What If I Cant Find A Tech Sheet

Ariel Non

If you cant find or if the residual sugar is not listed, here are a few tips:

  • Cheap wine usually has residual sugar. Its safe to assume that most affordable wines from the US contain some residual sugar, perhaps anywhere from 215 g/L. There are, of course, excellent exceptions to this rule so look for more information first.
  • Drink slightly better wine. If you spend a little more on a bottle of wine, say around $1525, producers tend to feature less residual sugar . Grapes are higher quality so the wines dont need sweetness to taste fruity.
  • Drink slightly less. Even at 15 g/L RS, a wine will only add about 7.5 sugar calories which isnt much! Like with all things, moderation is key!
