Negative Effects On Teeth

COFFEE TEA WINE: WHICH STAINS INVISALIGN MOST? Dr. Bailey finds out

While many people choose Invisalign for the advantage of their invisibility, they do not choose Invisalign for their convenience. If you do choose to drink anything other than room temperature water and fail to remove the aligners each time you take a sip of that drink, you risk your oral health.

When you drink a liquid with the aligners on, that liquid can seep down between the aligners and your teeth. Acidic drinks like tea, coffee and alcohol and sugary drinks like juice and soda are especially dangerous. The tiny space between your teeth and the aligners acts as a breeding ground for bacteria, and this is exacerbated by sugar and acid:

  • Sugar is a food source for this bacteria, allowing bacteria to nurture cavities.
  • Acid can drain minerals from the teeth, causing weak and decayed teeth.

Saliva would normally help prevent sugar and acids from destroying your teeth but, with Invisalign, the aligners form a barrier between the saliva and teeth. This adds to the negative impact drinks other than water can have on your teeth while you are being treated with Invisalign.

It is important, therefore, that even when you remove the aligners to eat and drink, to brush and floss afterwards to prevent the build up of any acidic or sugary food remnants between the aligners and your teeth.

Invisalign And Drinking With A Straw

We have a lot of patients ask if they can still drink whatever they want if they use a straw with Invisalign. While you may have heard of this trick for teeth whitening, it does not work in regards to keeping your aligners safe. Hot drinks will still cause heat damage, and sugars can still be trapped in your teeth.

It is important to remember that while these drink restrictions sound like a downside to Invisalign treatment, Invisalign clear aligners are made to be comfortable and fit your lifestyle. When you compare the dietary restrictions with braces vs Invisalign, youll find that clear aligners are much easier to manage!

A Problems With Sugary Beverages

Background.

Saliva provides some beneficial functions for your teeth:

Unfortunately, when you wear your orthodontic aligners, the barrier they create inhibits these actions.

Sugary drinks that seep inside your aligner can promote tooth decay.

An example.

Take the situation where a sugary drink is consumed while a person is wearing their appliances.

  • At least some of the beverage will seep into the internal aspect of their aligners
  • And once it has, it becomes a food source for the cavity-causing bacteria living in the dental plaque on and around the encased teeth.

Since the presence of the aligner acts as a barrier and therefore inhibits the movement of saliva, the tooth-damaging acids created by the bacteria wont be diluted and neutralized as effectively, and any potential for remineralization will be inhibited. As a result, the net effect can be one where the environment within the aligners is tipped towards active tooth decay formation.
