Well, youre in luck, because I took a wine class in culinary school, and I still have my GIANT textbook.
It gave me lots of great ideas for snack and wine pairings for my wine and cheese board, including:
- strawberries pair with pinot noir
- chocolate chip cookies pair with syrah or cabernet sauvignon
- candied pecans or walnuts pair with riesling
- pepperoni pair with syrah
- sweet potato chips pair with moscato
- white chocolate pair with champagne

Syrah Pairs With Spicy Meats
You may not think that there is any type of spicy food that goes with wine, but Syrah opens up a lot of possibilities. This red wine is so bold and decadent that some even describe the taste as meaty. The combination of its fruity tones with a surprising velvety smokiness is divine.
If youre eating any meat that seasoned heavily with spices like cumin, curry, or chilli, youll be blown away once you try it with a glass of Syrah.
Duck With Orange Sauce
Next up is another classic duck recipe: duck with orange sauce. So whats the best wine pairing with this duck recipe?
First, it helps to know how the dish is prepared.
Usually , the duck breasts will be pan-fried, and served rare. The sauce is usually made by deglazing the pan containing the cooking juices with orange juice, and adding bits of orange. So what we end up with is a dish with a bit of acidity, distinct orange notes, and of course the subtle gamey aromas of the duck itself.
Here, we can go with either red or white wine depending on your preference.
For whites, I would tend to recommend a Pinot Gris from Alsace, or a Gewürztraminer. What Im looking for is a wine with enough body to match the meat, enough aromas to match the orange, and some richness to match the fat from the sauce and meat.
As for red options, I would aim for a similar balance as mentioned with the white, and also keep the tannins lows, so as not to clash with the dish. Great options would be young Beaujolais. Treat yourself to an appellation like Morgon or a Brouilly. Outside of France, appellations in Piedmont such as Barbaresco or Barolo will also be great choices .

When talking about duck and wine pairing, Pinot Noir tends to be the blanket answer. And there is certainly a lot of sense in that recommendation. Duck tends to be a little fatty, rich but not as strong as game, and either pan fried or roasted.
As a result, choosing a wine that has good acidity and freshness will help to balance the fat. Fruity and smoky aromas will pair well with the meat flavors.

Which Wine To Drink With Paella
If youre a bit hesitant about the idea of matching fish and red wine you might automatically think of pairing paella with a white wine. But I think it goes just as well with a rosé or a red.
Recipes vary – and are much argued over – but typically the dish will include chicken or rabbit, prawns, mussels or clams, red peppers, pimenton and saffron-flavoured rice. Some Latin-American versions also include spicy sausage but in general its more a savoury than a spicy dish and the seafood note isnt dominant.
Its also typically eaten at a relaxed sort of family gathering so I wouldnt advocate anything too grand. A chilled dry roséfrom Navarra or Rioja generally hits the spot perfectly but theres absolutely no reason why you shouldnt drink an inexpensive red Riojaor other medium-bodied tempranillo or garnacha or garnacha blends . But I’d avoid ‘fruit-bombs’ or overly alcoholic, tannic reds.
Looking outside Spain, lighter reds and rosés from the neighbouring Languedoc-Roussillonwould work well as would the new wave of characterful roussanne, marsanne and viognier-based Languedoc whites if white wine is your preference.
What I look for in a white with paella is an earthy richness rather than a sharp citrussy or floral character so I personally wouldnt go for a sauvignon blanc or a riesling.
