What Else Should I Include On A Cheese Board For Wine Tasting
Well, youre in luck, because I took a wine class in culinary school, and I still have my GIANT textbook.
It gave me lots of great ideas for snack and wine pairings for my wine and cheese board, including:
- strawberries pair with pinot noir
- chocolate chip cookies pair with syrah or cabernet sauvignon
- candied pecans or walnuts pair with riesling
- pepperoni pair with syrah
- sweet potato chips pair with moscato
- white chocolate pair with champagne
- prosciutto pair with pinot noir
- castelvetrano olives pair with sauvignon blanc
Syrah Pairs With Spicy Meats
You may not think that there is any type of spicy food that goes with wine, but Syrah opens up a lot of possibilities. This red wine is so bold and decadent that some even describe the taste as meaty. The combination of its fruity tones with a surprising velvety smokiness is divine.
If youre eating any meat that seasoned heavily with spices like cumin, curry, or chilli, youll be blown away once you try it with a glass of Syrah.
Duck With Orange Sauce
Next up is another classic duck recipe: duck with orange sauce. So whats the best wine pairing with this duck recipe?
First, it helps to know how the dish is prepared.
Usually , the duck breasts will be pan-fried, and served rare. The sauce is usually made by deglazing the pan containing the cooking juices with orange juice, and adding bits of orange. So what we end up with is a dish with a bit of acidity, distinct orange notes, and of course the subtle gamey aromas of the duck itself.
Here, we can go with either red or white wine depending on your preference.
For whites, I would tend to recommend a Pinot Gris from Alsace, or a Gewürztraminer. What Im looking for is a wine with enough body to match the meat, enough aromas to match the orange, and some richness to match the fat from the sauce and meat.
As for red options, I would aim for a similar balance as mentioned with the white, and also keep the tannins lows, so as not to clash with the dish. Great options would be young Beaujolais. Treat yourself to an appellation like Morgon or a Brouilly. Outside of France, appellations in Piedmont such as Barbaresco or Barolo will also be great choices .

Mini Cupcakes And Moscato
Awww, mini cupcakes, how sweet! If youre snacking on these bite sized morsels, 1) Im jealous 2) consider opening a bottle of Moscato and pouring yourself a glass. The sweetness of the Moscato pairs well with the sugary cupcake bite youre enjoying . Did I mention that excessive sprinkles makes this pairing EVEN BETTER?
Pinot Noir: Slow Cooker Pork Carnitas Tacos
Since pork basically straddles the line between white meat and red meat, your safest bet is to select a light-bodied red wine, like pinot noir. With just a hint of spice, it complements the taco seasoning in this slow-cooker recipe flawlesslybut thanks to its lower tannins and high acidity, it will still let the flavorful meat shine. An alternative option for these slow-cooker pork carnitas tacos is a dry rosé.

Moscato Dasti Pairs With Fruits
Fruits are obvious snacks to serve with wine since wine can be made from more than grapes. Moscato dAsti is always a wise choice to serve with plain fruits or fruity desserts because its not too sweet. Since its also sparkling wine, it can also help cleanse your palate between each bite so you can enjoy the full flavours of each fruit.
Spicy Indian Takeout And Riesling
Why they’re a perfect pair: Slightly sweet, low-alcohol wines like German, Australian or New York Rieslings give the palate some relief from a spicy meal. A highly alcoholic wine would make you feel the burn.Similar pairings: Spicy Asian food or highly spiced Mexican dishes like enchiladas also pair well with Riesling. A dry Gewurztraminer also pairs well with heart-pumping cuisines like Thai or Indian.

Bruschetta With Basil And Tomato Sauce
Bruschetta makes an easy base for countless finger foods and appetizers. Of course, its the toppings that you use on the bruschetta that determine the best wines to match with the finger food.
When you use basil and tomato sauce, you end up with similar flavors to a margherita pizza, with much less effort. Because the finger food is Italian themed anyway, you could easily pair it with an Italian red wine blend. Or, if you want something different, how about a cabernet sauvignon or merlot?
Wine Pairing Is Not Black And White
When it comes to wine pairing, weve all heard that fish goes with white wine, and steak goes with red wine. But exactly which reds and whites are we talking about?
Lets use fish to demonstrate how youd go about choosing the right wine. The subtle flavors of white fish like sole or halibut pair well with light-bodied whites such as gewürztraminer, pinot grigio, and pinot blanc. However, a more oily fish like salmon is best paired with an oaked chardonnay or a lighter-bodied Burgundy that will complement the fuller body and weight of the fish.
Seared tuna is another meaty fish that adapts as well to red wine as it does to white. Try it with a merlot or a syrah. Meanwhile, smoked trout is ideal with dry sparkling wine or German riesling to balance the flavors.

Riesling: Thai Chicken Curry
Salty, sour, and spicy all at once, this Thai chicken curry demands a wine that can stand up to its powerhouse of flavors, which include lemongrass, garlic, and chiles. Is Pinot Noir The Be All And End All
When talking about duck and wine pairing, Pinot Noir tends to be the blanket answer. And there is certainly a lot of sense in that recommendation. Duck tends to be a little fatty, rich but not as strong as game, and either pan fried or roasted.
As a result, choosing a wine that has good acidity and freshness will help to balance the fat. Fruity and smoky aromas will pair well with the meat flavors.
But because the fat content isnt very high, you want to keep the tannins medium to low. And there you have it, weve just described the taste profile of Pinot Noir .
So while I agree that Pinot Noir work well with duck, Ill try and go in a bit more detail and offer alternative suggestions depending on the recipe.

The Secret To Pairing Sweet Wine With Savory Food
Is any wine descriptor more taboo than the term sweet? Despite the fact that we guzzle soda and will spend $15 for a milkshake with an actual slice of cake in it, Americans stave off sweet wines like theyre the devil. But if theres any occasion to drink sweet wines, some of which are among the worlds most complex and long-lived vino, its sugar-filled Valentines Day.
The general rule of thumb is that sweet wines should always be paired with sweet food and that the wine should always be sweeter than the dish. But theres something to be said for the combination of sweet and savory. Do you dare to pair a sweet wine with the main course, rather than relegating it to the end of the meal? A few simple guidelines can lead to an adventurous and show-stopping pairing.

Which Wine To Drink With Paella
If youre a bit hesitant about the idea of matching fish and red wine you might automatically think of pairing paella with a white wine. But I think it goes just as well with a rosé or a red.
Recipes vary – and are much argued over – but typically the dish will include chicken or rabbit, prawns, mussels or clams, red peppers, pimenton and saffron-flavoured rice. Some Latin-American versions also include spicy sausage but in general its more a savoury than a spicy dish and the seafood note isnt dominant.
Its also typically eaten at a relaxed sort of family gathering so I wouldnt advocate anything too grand. A chilled dry roséfrom Navarra or Rioja generally hits the spot perfectly but theres absolutely no reason why you shouldnt drink an inexpensive red Riojaor other medium-bodied tempranillo or garnacha or garnacha blends . But I’d avoid ‘fruit-bombs’ or overly alcoholic, tannic reds.
Looking outside Spain, lighter reds and rosés from the neighbouring Languedoc-Roussillonwould work well as would the new wave of characterful roussanne, marsanne and viognier-based Languedoc whites if white wine is your preference.
What I look for in a white with paella is an earthy richness rather than a sharp citrussy or floral character so I personally wouldnt go for a sauvignon blanc or a riesling.
