It Wasn’t Included In A 2015 Arsenic Scare

In 2015, wine drinkers got news that made them pause before they popped their corks: A lawsuit alleged many popular California wines contained dangerously high levels of inorganic arsenic essentially, poison. Testing experts confirmed that the wines sampled we high in the toxin and, “in some cases, up to 500 percent or more than what is considered the maximum acceptable safe daily intake limit.”

While 83 wines were listed in the suit, including recognizable names like Charles Shaw, Wine Cube, Sutter Home, and Beringer, one producer was noticeably absent: Gallo.

So how did Gallo manage to dodge this allegation? Wine blogger The Gray Report surmised that it likely wasn’t something nefarious, like Gallo paying off the plaintiff’s lawyers, or Gallo being behind the suit as a way to mess with competitors. No, Gray suggested something far less provocative: “Gallo, known for its technological prowess for decades, can make super-cheap wines with arsenic levels lower than others.” In fact, the plaintiff’s attorney told him, “From the testing we’ve done, Gallo does it right. They try to be competitive and try not to have excess arsenic in their wines. To me that’s proof that it’s not necessary to have excess arsenic in wine.”

For what it’s worth, the lawsuit was eventually thrown out in 2016, but you can still rest easy knowing that Gallo and its Winking Owl wine for safe for the drinking.

These wines are made in California by Burlwood Cellars, which is a subsidiary of E & J Gallo. Burlwood produces wines for Aldi, as well as for the hotel and restaurant industry.

These wines are not traditional fruit wines made with the fruit on the label. They are actually made with grapes , and then the fruit flavor is added to the wine.

My Final Impression Of The Range

Overall, I think most of these wines are pretty dang wonderful for the price. The only ones that are questionable, in my opinion, are the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and I recommend saving those specifically for cooking. For less than three dollars each, the Pinot Grigio, Moscato, and Shiraz are an impressive budget wine to sip and enjoy with your family or friends.

If you’re curious, I recommend giving your favourite type a try it’s only three dollars after all.

Winking Owl: Reviews Of An Under $3 Wine

The first thing I thought when encountering a wine called “Winking Owl” had nothing to do with the fact that it sells for less than $3, is exclusive to the Aldi grocery store chain, and is made by Gallo. No, my first thought was, “Can an owl wink?”* Fortunately, many have chimed in on how the wines taste. Here are a few thoughts:

Robert Scheer, The Indianpolis Star: A fan of the Shiraz because it …tastes like it should, with good fruit flavors that remind me of blackberry, and some smokiness that’s reminiscent of South African pinotage. I’d buy it again. You can do a lot worse for $10, more than triple the cost of this.”

Dave Van de Walle, Metasip: More praise for the Shiraz: “Quite tasty, some fruit, but pretty dry. Good finish blackberry, black pepper. Earthy as well.” He goes on to give it a “B+”. In case you are in shock, he reiterates, “Yes, you heard me. This wine cost us $3 and gets a B+.”

Dave, Cheap Wine Finder: Regarding the Cabernet Sauvignon: “What it is, is a very drinkable, very inexpensive bottle of Red wine. It is slightly on the sweet side and the tannins are missing, so there is not a ton of structure, but it has a nice mix of flavors and no ‘off’ flavor or odd textures.”

Cory, Central Track: No review per se, but food pairings are offered. Cory recommends any of the varieties of Winking Owl with “Brown Sugar Toaster Tarts, Happy Farms Cheese Wedges, Horse Meat ‘All Beef’ Patties.”

Winking Owl White Blend is a super affordable California white wine blend that comes in a 3 liter box. White wine blends use a mix of grapes that doesnt fall into one of the major wine types like Chardonnay. Generally white blends are going to be balanced with a bit of sweetness and not much complexity. From that tasting notes online it appears that Aldis white blend fits with this category. Most report that it is not overly flavorful or complex but it drinkable and is better chilled.

This would be a good everyday white wine to keep in the fridge for when you need a bit for cooking or want just one glass. Being able to keep the wine for a long period of time after opening is one of the big benefits to buying boxed wine vs bottled. Typically an open bottle of wine should be used within a few days after opening and will start tasting sour after a week but boxed wines typically last about 6 weeks after opening. You typically dont even need to refrigerate boxed wine after opening but it may last longer if kept cool and this white wine is best served chilled.
