The Best Wines To Drink In 2021

After the insane year that was 2020, what are people looking forward to drinking most in 2021? Every December, I ask a group of wine writers and sommeliers what they are personally looking forward to enjoying in the coming year, and if there is one common thread this time, its not a specific grape or region its the reminder that wine is a social experience, and we are all missing having a glass with our friends and families, as well as being at our favorite restaurants and wineries. 2020 has taken a toll on many businesses, and this year Ive also asked everyone to name a restaurant or cause where people can help by a contribution or just a takeout order. Cheers to better times in 2021!

For 2021, I’m looking forward to drinking as opposed to tasting for work wines from a few places that I thought I might get to in 2020, but never did because of, well, 2020. First, Oregon Pinot Noir. I’d planned to be at IPNC this past summer no dice . And I recently drank some gorgeous 2010s from my cellar, from Elk Cove and St. Innocent, which put me in mind again of how well these wines age.

Should You Ever Chill A Full

The short answer is yes, sometimes. Have you ever been served a red wine too warm? It can easily happen, especially in hotter climates.

Even for full bodied reds, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz, its important to stop the wine getting too warm before serving.

For a red wine, much warmer than 18°C is too high, said Walls. Its flavours become blurred and soupy, its structure softens and alcohol becomes more noticeable.

Chill it down slightly and flavours come into focus, alcohol becomes less apparent, structure tightens up and the wine is more refreshing to drink.

How To Pick The Best Spicy Red Wines To Drink With Food

6 Best Dry Red Wines for 2020

Cold weather and hearty autumn dishes call for reds with oomph. Here’s where to find them

When someone who works in the wine trade mentions spicy reds, theyre not talking about mulled wine. Instead they are referring to a type of red which has aromas and flavours of clove, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and black pepper. None of this has been added in, of course. The spiciness has developed in the wine naturally, during maceration , during fermentation and then while ageing before bottling.

Its always intrigued me that wine so rarely tastes of the actual fruit it has been made from grapes. Instead, it delivers myriad other fruit flavours, as well as herbs, grass, flowers and sometimes vegetables like asparagus and green pepper. But perhaps the most intriguing are these spicy notes. They come from two sources: the grapes themselves and from oak used to contain the wine while its fermenting and/or maturing.

But this, and plenty of other varieties, can turn that way if put in oak barrels as the oak flavour gradually seeps out into the wine, providing vanilla and black pepper in particular. If the oak barrels are new, the spiciness will be stronger as the casks age through second, third and fourth fill, it becomes more subtle. And, of course, if you combine a spicy grape variety with oak use, you simply turn the heat up on the finished wine.

Tips For Drinking Chilled Red Wine

  • Chilled, not cold. No red wine will sing when it is too cold, so really, you want about 45 mins max in the fridge. Avoid ice cubes in your glass too.

  • Avoid heavy, dry tannic wines and oaky wines.

  • Fruity styles of wine work best.

Some grape varieties are naturally more fruity and less tannic than others, so get to know them and the styles of wine they make. Here are some to look out for:

Best Easy Drinking Pinot Noir: Louis Jadot Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2017

Louis Jadot makes fun, tasty budget wines. Jadot wines are a classic representation of their grape, which means theyre a great tool for learning about how wine should taste. This French pinot noir is light and fruity with a touch of earthy minerality.

Typically, a wine from Europe will be labeled with the region, and a wine from the U.S. will be labeled with the grape variety. This tends to cause some confusion among novice wine drinkers, who shouldnt be expected to know that legally, all reds from Burgundy must be 100 percent pinot noir if they carry the Burgundy label. Louis Jadot wines are friendly and approachable and include both the region and grape on the label.

Different Types Of Red Wine

The Best Red Wines For Beginners (Series): #3 Merlot

Red wines are categorized by varietals the type of grape that is used to produce the wine. Some red wines blend several varietals to elicit different flavors or tasting characteristics. These red blends are also generally more affordable than single varietals from Bordeaux, Napa Valley, or Australia.

Within these types of red wine, each one can have a different style: light-bodied, medium-bodied, or full-bodied. Red wines with a light body have an airy effect on the palate. These wines including Grenache and Pinot Noir tend to have fewer tannins and thus less of a punchy flavor. Medium-bodied red wines like Merlot and Shiraz have a higher alcohol content compared to light-bodied wines and offer a lingering flavor. Full-bodied red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon from California contain more than 13.5% alcohol and offer a full mouth feel. They are rich and bold with intense flavors.

Not sure which type of wine you’ll like? Here, well break down the differences between red wines. Plus, well give you handy tips on which ones you may like based on your taste preferences.
