Drink Wine In Bordeaux

Where to play, where to stay in the Bordeaux wine region of France

Ok, so youve visited some of the Bordeaux wineries, had your wine tastings, and now its time to drink more of the varieties youve enjoyed. Unfortunately for those on a budget, most restaurants and cafes in Bordeaux tend to offer wines only by the bottle. And ordering wine by the bottle in Bordeaux can get very expensive.

Even if you do find a cafe with wines by the glass, youre often looking at about 8 per glass for anything decent. Thatll add up real quick. Go as a couple, sip on three glasses of wine and next thing you know theres a 50 check waiting to be paid. Yikes!

Instead, we highly recommend a place where wine by the glass starts at only 2. Yes, 2!

Thats essentially four glasses of wine for the price of one! Were not just talking about wine tastings. These 2 glasses are full pours. View our Where to drink recommendations in the subsequent section to see where you can relish in these amazingly affordable 2 glasses of Bordeauxs finest!

You Can Plan A Diy Bordeaux Wine Tour

It is absolutely possible to explore on your own. In fact, you might not even need a car! You can use public transportation to visit many châteaux just outside the city of Bordeaux. If youre willing to add on a bike rental, your options increase even more. The tourism board has an excellent page outlining the different options. Ive followed their instructions for traveling between the city center and Podensac and had an excellent experience.

If you do explore the region on your own by car, plan on appointing a designated driver with a fully charged phone and GPS capability for navigation. With your own wheels, the world is your oyster You can explore by interest or appellation. The Bordeaux Wine Trip blog , has lists of vineyards according to theme like artsy vineyards, eco-properties, historical vineyards, and so on. If youre overwhelmed on where to start, consider embracing a theme to guide your journey.

Alternatively, choose an appellation and start exploring. Id go with a tiny one. Its much easier to get a sense of what Pomerol-produced wine is like than Sainte-Foy-Bordeaux, just because youll be spending far less time driving around. Rest assured that every appellation produces excellent red and white wines and wineries are eager to help you find a blend that you love. You can expect warm welcomes that might even make those Niagara producers change their minds!

Best Places To Stay In Bordeaux France

Say Bordeaux and people will immediately think of wine. That isnt necessarily untrue Bordeaux is the definitive capital of the Bordeaux wine-growing region. Theres certainly plenty of wine to be had in this city, thats for sure. But although the name is famed throughout the world, theres a lot more to Bordeaux than fermented grape juice.

Bordeaux is a beautiful place to explore. Its bursting at the seams with grand old mansions and towering churches, huge public squares full of old world extravagance, and historic streets to wander.

Staying here wont break your budget there are a few hotels that are thankfully mid-range. That said, if you want to splash out on something lavish, with all those historic buildings around, you can definitely do that.

Where To Stay In Bordeaux Region

My wife and I plan to fly into Bordeaux in early September and then spend 4-5 days in the region prior to driving to the Dordogne. We generally prefer to stay in one place and day trip to surrounding areas. Is it best to stay in the City of Bordeaux and then tour to the Medoc, St. Emilion and possibly Graves while based in Bordeaux or perhaps stay in St. Emilion with a similar itinerary including a day or so in Bordeaux? If we stay in Bordeaux, is it best to delay car rental until we are ready to drive to the Dordogne and work with tour guides for our day trips?

I always suggest to my clients to use Bordeaux city as a home base, especially if they’re going to be staying in the area for several days and plan on seeing sites dispersed around the region. The city is centrally situated for heading north to the Médoc, east to Saint-Emilion, the Graves to the south, and west to the Atlantic coast.

For greatest flexibility, you’d want to have a car since getting around outside the urban areawhere the vineyards are, for examplecan be inconvenient, albeit possible, depending on public transport.

There are lots of possibilities of where to stay depending upon your tastes. Bordeaux is the center of all the vineyards so accessible to all.

I work a lot with les Sources de Caudalie in the Graves. Its a wonderful hotel with a vinotherapy spa. It is out in the vineyards however so a little remote. You would definitely need a car at all times. Getting to the medoc will take a good hour.

Saint Pierre And Saint Paul Bordeaux Historic District

Bordeaux Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia

The areas of Saint Pierre and Saint Paul make up the historic center of the city. It is bordered by the Garonne river to the east Grand Theatre, Bordeauxs opera house to the north Rue Sainte-Catherine, the longest pedestrian shopping area in all of Europe to the west and Cr Victor Hugo to the South.

The historic district is packed with charming narrow streets with historic buildings, charming monuments, and squares giving you the chance to take a stroll back through time.

Some of the most famous monuments are the bell tower, la Grosse Cloche the ancient gate to the city, Porte Cailhau and the Gothic-styled Saint Pierre church

Throughout you will also find a number of the best bars, hip cafes, and restaurants the city has to offer. Many of them centered around the citys popular squares like Place du Palais, Place du Parlement, and Place Fernand Lafargue.

This makes it a fabulous destination to try an incredible range of drinks and cuisines, both modern and traditional, while surrounded by iconic landmarks and architecture.

Being located on the left bank of the Garonne river, it also has a lovely promenade where to can take a pleasant stroll, and stop at the worlds largest reflecting pool, Miroir deau in front of the Place de la Bourse.

While admittedly one of the more expensive parts of the city, it is well worth it for all it offers.
