Its much easier to get a sense of what Pomerol-produced wine is like than Sainte-Foy-Bordeaux, just because youll be spending far less time driving around. Rest assured that every appellation produces excellent red and white wines and wineries are eager to help you find a blend that you love. Where To Stay In Bordeaux Region
My wife and I plan to fly into Bordeaux in early September and then spend 4-5 days in the region prior to driving to the Dordogne. We generally prefer to stay in one place and day trip to surrounding areas. Is it best to stay in the City of Bordeaux and then tour to the Medoc, St. Emilion and possibly Graves while based in Bordeaux or perhaps stay in St. Emilion with a similar itinerary including a day or so in Bordeaux? If we stay in Bordeaux, is it best to delay car rental until we are ready to drive to the Dordogne and work with tour guides for our day trips?
I always suggest to my clients to use Bordeaux city as a home base, especially if they’re going to be staying in the area for several days and plan on seeing sites dispersed around the region. The city is centrally situated for heading north to the Médoc, east to Saint-Emilion, the Graves to the south, and west to the Atlantic coast.
For greatest flexibility, you’d want to have a car since getting around outside the urban areawhere the vineyards are, for examplecan be inconvenient, albeit possible, depending on public transport.
There are lots of possibilities of where to stay depending upon your tastes. Bordeaux is the center of all the vineyards so accessible to all.
I work a lot with les Sources de Caudalie in the Graves. Its a wonderful hotel with a vinotherapy spa. It is out in the vineyards however so a little remote. You would definitely need a car at all times. Getting to the medoc will take a good hour.
