Texas Hill Country & Winery Tours

Imagine sitting outside, surrounded by gentle rolling hills covered by acres of twisting grapevines, dramatic cloudscapes, and sweeping vistas. Tall grasses flutter lazily in the breeze, as if the world is sighing with contentment. At hand, reflecting long, dancing prisms of sunlight onto the wrought-iron table, are all sorts of glasses, full of a beautiful and tasty range of 3-ounce wine pours in varying flavors, hues, and aromas. Theres the opaqueness of a red mourvedre, the crispness of an albarino the color of fading morning sunlight, the bubbly effervescence of a poppy-pink pétillant naturel, the minerality of a jeweled-amber chenin blanc, the smoothness of a bold-purple tannat, the tart, creamy unfilteredness of a malvasia bianca. These wines are luscious and wonderful and unique, and even better, every single one was made right here in Texas. Yes, youre drinking Texas grapes and, in fact, Texas wine is great, and theres never been a better time in history to drink it.

Now, even California wineries are eyeing expansions to the Lone Star State. Sonoma winery Foyt Family Wines and Paso Robles winery Halter Ranch plan on opening Hill Country tasting rooms, which were in the works before the pandemic. These moves indicate that West Coast wineries understand the significance of Texas wine and its potential for growth in the coming years.

And all of that barely scratches the surface of the Central Texas wine ecosystem.

/ Best Place To Refuel: Pecan Street Brewing

Whether its lunch or a snack before heading back to Austin, staying properly fueled is a requirement for any wine trip. For this, my recommendation is Pecan Street Brewing. This restaurant is in Johnson City and serves a full menu of American favorites. On a recent visit, my friend and I shared a burger, as well as chips and salsa. But we were also tempted by the pizzas and chicken fried steak.

In addition to great food, Pecan Street is also a brewery. A seat at the bar will give you a view of the working brewery and beer flights are available. While I usually am wine focused on my trips, I see that a day would be happily passed at this brewery alone.

A post shared by Pecan Street Brewing on Oct 22, 2018 at 3:21pm PDT

Insider information/pro-tips: The storefront visible from the street is only one part of the brewery. Be sure to walk through the restaurant to see the biergarten, which opens to a park behind the brewery. If you would like to continue your wine travails, many Texas Hill Country wines are available at Pecan Street Brewing.

Your Guide To Texas Wine Country Forbes Travel Guide Stories

Thank you to Visit Fredericksburg and Stonewall Motor Lodge and or hosting us at some of these places so we could explore #FredTX.

What have we gotten ourselves into?, asked the lady through my window who just drove up next to us behind the rickety-metal building.

Actually that same phrase had crossed our mind a few times during our stays in Fredericksburg/Stonewall/Hye. Each one an adventure and each of one of them have always come out to be much better than we could ever imagine, which is why we keep going back to the area lovingly called Texas Wine Country.

We reassured her that the sandwich she was about to have and that we had devoured was the best sandwich we had ever eaten which is why we had come back a second time in two days.

And it was. This loaded BLT had everything on it but the kitchen sink and couldnt make me any happier than a week at Disney World.

Actually everything we had in the post office-turned-general-store-turned-restaurant-wine-tasting-still-post-office known as Hye Market was THAT good. Deceptively good as nothing there put on any heirs it was what it was and that was why you loved it. Its exactly the best example of why I love this part of Texas it just is what it is and invites everyone to enjoy it. And if you just let go, youll have one of those best days ever experiences every time you visit

Lost Draw Cellars is the one best on this list that is in Fredericksburg proper. The managing team consists of Andy Timmons, his nephew Andrew Sides, and Sides father-in-law, Troy Ottmers. All are familiar faces in Fredericksburg and have been part of the community in several other capacities beyond wine. Timmons was a peanut and cotton farmer until 2006 when he turned to grapes, and the Lost Draw tasting room sits on the location of Ottmers former business.

After a day of touring, wine making, growing, and other functions related to the industry, this is where industry pros go to relax and be with each other.
