Wine Drunk Versus Beer Drunk

How Much Alcohol Percentage is in Wine?- V is for Vino Wine Show (episode clip)

To make things straight, alcohol is alcohol regardless of if youre drinking wine, beer or a spirit because it is all ethanol at the end of the day. However, depending on your mood state they do affect you differently when youre drunk, and you could even have a biased to how it makes you feel creating an allusion of the effects.

The way ethanol travels through the body is by the bloodstream. It enters the stomach and small intestine before it is broken down by the liver to help you metabolize everything. Whatever cant be processed by the liver goes to other organs such as the brain that ends up regulating your mood.

So how does this all fit into being wine drunk or beer drunk? Well, this tells us that depending on how fast and well your body breaks down ethanol before entering your brain could have a huge effect on the way your mood is when drunk by either wine or beer. It also means that a lot of it is mind over matter as well.

So, if you think that wine drunk feels better than being drunk from beer, it will feel better. We all know that the brain is a very powerful and important organ in the body. If your brain isnt functioning properly, then nothing else will as a result. Therefore, it makes a lot of sense that scientists have found that what you think influences your perception.

So is wine drunk really different than being drunk by beer? No. The only difference is how fast youll get there depending on some factors alongside the alcohol by volume.

Alcohol Use Disorder In The United States

Everyday Use Of No/low Terms

Whilst the labelling rules might be slightly confusing for no/low alcohol drinks, the main problem with them is that outside of labelling, theyre very rarely followed.

As you can imagine, most people haven’t sat down and read the Food Labelling Regulations from 1996 and so don’t know the rules. Consequently, in everyday use people will use the terms they think best describe the drinks so freely swap the terms alcohol-free, non-alcoholic, dealcoholised and low alcohol.

This can prove a challenge for anyone in the no or low alcohol drinks market.

Here at Good Stuff Drinks, we know the rules about the labelling of these drinks. However, we deliberately choose to use these terms interchangeably to reflect peoples common use of the terms. If we only talked about dealcoholised drinks, nobody would find us online as most people are searching and using terms like alcohol-free, non-alcoholic and low alcohol.

For those customers where the exact alcohol content is important, we will always try and include the alcohol content on the product description as shown on the labels.

Alcohol Levels Of Wine From Lowest To Highest

How Much Alcohol Is In A Wine Cooler

Depending on who you ask, the alcohol content of wine can be broken into several different categories with varying ABV thresholds. Some will say that there are four or more categories ranging from low and medium-low to medium-high, high, and very high.

We say that’s just plain finicky. Instead, we’ve taken a broader approach to these imaginary limits to keep things practical and easy to understand.

As with most things in life, there are always exceptions to the rules. The numbers we use here are general assessments of the alcohol content in different wines. As such, be sure to check the ABV percentage on the wine label to confirm how much alcohol youre actually drinking. We also included the winegrowing regions since local climate plays a role in alcohol levels.

White Wine Alcohol Content

The alcohol content in white wine varies from 5% to 14% but comes in at an average of 10% ABV. The less ripe, white grapes used in fermentation have less sugar than darker grapes. This sugar converts to ethanol at a lower rate as well. This gives white wine its sweet taste but keeps it light and refreshing.

Since there’s less alcohol, it’s also easy to drink more white wine in one sitting. This can sometimes be more than intended. To avoid this, try only using a standard wine pour or pick up a set of wine glasses with pour lines.

Risks Of Alcohol Abuse

An estimated 14.8 million people aged 12 or older had an alcohol use disorder in 2018, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health report.10 This means that about 1 in 9 people, or 5.4% of Americans, are struggling with the disease.10 When it comes to monitoring your own drinking habits, keeping track of your blood alcohol levels and knowing how fast alcohol is metabolized can help you avoid risky drinking habits that could create more serious issues in the future or turn into an AUD. Being better informed about the dangers of alcohol can also help avoid a cycle of growing tolerance, physical dependence, and a compulsive pattern of use that can develop into a potential addiction.

Differences In Lower And Higher Alcohol Wines

How much alcohol is in wine? The alcohol content in wine varies depending on the type you choose. This is because, as the yeast in the wine converts the sugars to alcohol, the winemaker can decide when to stop that process, resulting in a higher or lower ABV.

Lower alcohol wines are classified by an ABV of less than 10 percent. They tend to be more balanced, pair well with a wide variety of foods, and due to the low alcohol content, can be consumed in larger quantities. Low-alcohol wines are typically sweeter due to the sugar leftover from the fermenting process .

Higher alcohol wines have an ABV of 10 percent or higher. They are notorious for scoring better in wine competitions due to their intensity and fuller body. Although rare, wines above 15 percent do exist. These include Madeira , Port , and Sherry .

Its important to pay attention to the higher alcohol content in wines, as the bottle can turn due to the presence of bacteria. Specifically, acetobacter is a common culprit that turns your wine into acetic acid, which has a pungent, vinegar-like odor. To combat this, most winemakers add sulfites to the wine mixture.

Some have a lower alcohol by volume content and are ideal for mixed drinks while others have a pretty respectable alcohol by volume content and should be consumed as is. Here are some of the most common sparkling wines:

Prosecco

Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine that has an alcohol content ranging from 10.5%-13%. Prosecco is made from Prosecco grapes. This type of bubbly is mainly produced in Venito, Italy. Prosecco is an affordable alternative to champagne, and you can find a quality bottle of Prosecco for under $20

How Much Alcohol Does It Have

Typically wine starts at around eight percent ABV extending all the way to twenty-five percent ABV. While beer starts as low as zero point zero five percent ABV to twelve percent ABV. But, dont let the alcohol by volume fool you. Just because you have twenty-five percent, ABV doesnt mean youll automatically get drunker than the twelve percent ABV counterpart. It is really all in the way you ration it out. Proportions matter!

Plus not all wine and beer are made alike. You can have a hard cider or low alcohol beer that is zero point zero five percent ABV and still get hammered. Many different factors will determine how drunk you get such as:

  • Weight
  • How fast you drink your beverage
  • Alcohol by Volume
  • How easily your body metabolizes alcohol
  • The age of the alcohol
  • Youre biological gender
  • Any Medications Youre on can be affected or affect you
  • How much food youve eaten or lack thereof
  • Your Overall Health

All of these factors play some type of role in your ability to get drunk and how many drinks it will take for you to get there.

How Many Beers In A Bottle Of Wine

Learning About Wine Archives

Okay, okay! So now youre getting it! But beer can also come in different-sized containers. What if youre having pints of Miller Lite at the bar? What then?

The ABV for the Miller Lite remains at 4.2%, but a pint is 16 oz. . This gives the pint 2.0 alcohol units. If we do the same math with this new figure, we find one bottle of 2018 Late Harvest Riesling is equal to 3.8 pints of Miller Lite.

You can use these equations to determine the comparative ratios for any wines and beers you please.

What if we start getting into wines or beers that have higher alcohol content?

To do that, lets take the Chateau Grand Traverse Cherry Port Reserve, which has an ABV 18.5% and a smaller volume of 375 ml. Now lets match it up to a 12 oz. can of Bells Two Hearted Ale, which has a relatively potent ABV of 7%.

The Cherry Port has 6.9 units of alcohol per bottle. The Two Hearted has 2.5 units of alcohol per can. This means that one half-sized bottle of Cherry Port Reserve is equal to almost three cans of Two Hearted.

How Many Glasses Of Wine Will Get You Drunk

Unless you weigh 250 lbs or more, two glasses of wine in an hour makes you legally drunk. In order to achieve the same effect with beer, youd have to consume 3 to 4 of them in an hour. You only have so much time in an hour, and you really need to concentrate on your drinking to get that much beer down.

Brain And Behavioral Changes

Youre likely well aware of the immediate effects of alcohol use: slurred speech, slowed reaction times, even blackouts where you cant remember the night before.

Drinking heavily can also lead to long-term effects on your brain. Alcohol abuse has been linked to memory loss, loss of coordination, and sleep disorders. Even longer-term, it can put you in a high-risk category for earlier cognitive decline.

Binge drinking is also damaging to your overall mental health, especially if its used as a coping mechanism. Mood changes, depression, and anxiety are all possible with long-term alcohol abuse.

Cooking Wine Alcohol Content

Cooking wine is intended to be used in the cooking process and usually has an alcohol content between 12% and 20%. Many wines can be used in cooking, but “cooking wine” is created differently than drinking wines. Cooking wine is fermented with the intent to achieve a higher amount of alcohol. This is paired with a large amount of salt in the wine. This is due to the fact that much of the alcohol and salt will be burned off during the cooking process. If the wine had a lower ABV, you may not get the intended effect in the end result.

Abv & The Aging Process

Winemaking: Measuring the Alcohol

The ABV of wine is not affected during the aging process, as the sugars have already converted to alcohol. However, the taste of the alcohol may become smoother and more understated the longer the bottle is aged. During the aging process, the phenolic compounds in wine link together, which mutes some of the primary flavors, including the harsher alcohol taste. Subsequently, the subtler notes and flavors are brought to the forefront.

So How Much Is That In Terms Of A Bottle A Night

So say you had a bad day at work and decide to come home and watch a movie.

Its part of everyday life.

You notice a bottle of wine in the fridge and states it is 12.5% alcohol by volume, so ABV.

You can always find this on the back of the bottle, by the way.

Now imagine you consume the whole bottle just relaxing with your feet up. So in effect, your allowance for that night is a whopping seven Standard Drinks. Not large but standard. Simple right?

It all adds up, but we may not think about it. Why would we?

The ABV figure is not on the glass. Its on the bottle. So once the bottle is open, thats it.

The wine glass, which has now got bigger and bigger over the years, has no label, and after a glass, you have probably forgotten about it anyway.

Effect 1 Per Mille Alcohol

In the so-called intoxication stage, visual acuity and especially spatial vision deteriorate further. We are confused and have clear speech, reaction, balance and orientation disorders. If you have so much alcohol in your blood, youve lost your ability to criticize. These are clear warning signals for alcohol poisoning.

One Bottle Of Wine Equals How Many Beers

If youre a regular wine drinker curious about how many beers worth of alcohol is in a typical bottle of wine, a decent estimate is about five beers. While this rule-of-thumb average is convenient, be sure to consider the ABV and volume of your wine or beer when making these comparisons. Miller Lite and Two Hearted Ale are very different beers when it comes to ABV.
