How Do I Choose The Ideal Packaging
How to choose the ideal packaging
At TotalWinePack we are experts in protective packaging for shipping bottles of wine. As such, we have developed four packaging models which, although they look alike at first glance, have important features and differences that make each packaging perfect for each type of use.
The purpose of our packaging is to protect the bottles and ensure that they remain intact during shipment. However, some packaging is designed to be able to deal with greater handling demands, whereas other models are specially devised to save time during assembly.
The safety of all of our packaging is based on air cushions formed by folding corrugated cardboard, enabling the bottles to be suspended and secure inside the boxes during transport.
PREMIUM: Strength double protection 3-mm-thick cardboard thickness of outer box 8 mm manual assembly for high levels of handling inland or international shipment two protective tabs, twice as high and thick to increase the robustness and volume of the air chamber. This is our best-selling packaging with a very low number of breakages. This is the first choice for most of our customers.

During our trip to California, we made it our mission to visit a number of wineries in Sonoma and Napa Valley. Naturally, this led us to purchase many bottles and a need to figure out how to get them safely to our home on the east coast. As information for this is rather limited, we thought it would be helpful to publish a detailed guide for wine shipping options for your visit!
Based on our experiences, there are five popular ways to ship wine from Sonoma and Napa wineries in order to enjoy some delicious bottles at home. But, as with all things with moving bottles of wine, there are some risks and costs involved.
As such, the following is organized from cheapest / most risky to most expensive / least risky as you proceed down. This assessment is based on our experience only.

Its Got A Great Shelf Life*
Once opened, bag-in-box wineyes, literally a plastic milk-bag-style bag of wine in a cardboard boxis good for about a month or six weeks. Compared with an open bottle of wine, which starts to lose its charm after a day or two, the box is great for when you just want a glass and dont want to commit to a whole bottle.
Why does boxed wine have such a great shelf life? The plastic bladder inside the box collapses as its emptied, which protects the liquid from oxygenwines frenemy. A little aeration opens up a wine, but too much will mute the fruit and give it a nutty taste.
Sidenote: Were talking BIB wine here. Carton wine , once opened, lasts about the same amount of time as an open bottle of wine.
Best Overall: Bota Box Old Vine Zinfandel

Region: California | ABV: 13% | Tasting Notes: Black fruits, Pepper, Blueberries
The boxed wine to reign over all other boxed wines with its enchanting flavor is the Old Vine Zinfandel from Bota Box.
Proudly produced from California grapes, this wine is very agreeable on the palate and proves boxed wine is a force to be reckoned with. Bold with balanced acidity and notes of black cherry, black plum, pepper spice and blueberry. This dark and jammy wine pairs well with barbecue and grilled meats.

Best For A Barbecue: Bridge Lane Red Blend
Courtesy of Total Wine
Region: Long Island | ABV: 12.9% | Tasting Notes: Red cherries, Plums, Oak
A Bordeaux-focused red blend from New Yorks Long Island, this medium-bodied wine is full of ripe cherries, as well as plum and red apple skins, with a subtle oak spice finish, says Brown. Its smooth and approachable, and it goes fantastically, she adds, with flavorful cuts like marinated hangar steak and chimichurri sauce.
Plus, with its minimalist, hipster packaging, its a great host gift for your next barbecue at a pals.

Wine Shippers As Checked Luggage
Wine Shippers are essentially boxes with contoured inserts that lock wine bottles into place to minimize movement during shipping. Theyre rather easy to use and are quite effective at protecting your precious liquid cargo when on the go.
The problem with wine shippers is that they can be quite difficult to find. Some shipping stores may have them available, but most are moving towards promoting dedicated wine suitcases which well talk more about below .
We were given a box by a friendly vineyard who had an extra one laying around with room for six bottles , but they also are available online for about $25-$35 depending on bottle count for those who want to purchase one in advance to take with you .
What is nice about these shipping cases is you can put them on the plane as a piece of checked luggage, so pending your baggage allowances you may be able to check this box at no additional charge. At first, we were worried about placing our bottles in the box , but everything turned out quite fine.
I put this on the riskier end of the spectrum for two reasons. First, there is the difficulty in finding a box in Napa/Sonoma to begin with. Second, there is the risk of shipping it as a checked box on a plane. I think the latter is a bit lower if you package your bottles correctly if only because boxes with fragile stickers get handled much nicer than luggage .

Are Wine Boxes Recyclable
Fortunately, wine boxes and their inserts are made from cardboard, meaning that they are easily recyclable, whilst also having many ways to repurpose them. One of the most useful ways of repurposing wine boxes is to use them in the areas that have high traffic to protect your flooring safe. Additionally, you can choose to welter down the wine box to help combat the weeds in your garden. You can achieve this by cutting the wine box into small strips, placing them above the affected area, then wetting them to ensure that they stay in place. This can be resulted from cardboard boxes being decomposable, and therefore leaving them to breakdown over time and suffocate the weeds. If none of these are suitable for you, we can buy back your wine box at the end of your storage with us and provide you with compensation.

Get The Right Packing Supplies
The most secure way to pack wine bottles is to use a specialty wine shipping box. You can find them online and have them shipped to you, or pick some up at a local shipping office.
Wine boxes are available in different sizes that will hold either one, six, or 12 bottles. Most include Styrofoam dividers that keep the bottles cradled snugly and prevent them from bumping against one another. These boxes are surprisingly expensive, but they are the best way to ensure your bottles will arrive without breaking. You can also keep the boxes and use them for trips home from the wine shop or to ship wine as a gift.
If you’re not terribly concerned about breakage, you can save some money and simply use cardboard cell boxes, which have cardboard dividers to separate the bottles. You can get these free at liquor stores or purchase them from shipping offices.
In addition to boxes, you’ll also need packing tape, packing paper , and a marker for labeling.
