Is The Conundrum Wine By Conundrum Vineyards The Same As The Old Caymus Conundrum
Hello there! I’m Dr. Vinifera, but you can call me Vinny. Ask me your toughest wine questions, from the fine points of etiquette to the science of winemaking. And don’t worry, I’m no wine snobyou can also ask me those “dumb questions” you’re too embarrased to ask your wine geek friends! I hope you find my answers educational, empowering and even amusing. And don’t forget to check out my most asked questions and my full archives for all my Q&A classics.
Dear Dr. Vinny,
Is Conundrum wine by Conundrum Vineyards owned by Caymus, who has made Conundrum for years? Is it the same wine? I cannot find a recent vintage from Caymus.
Alan G., Santa Barbara, Calif.
It is the same wine, but a couple things have changed. When the aromatic kitchen-sink blend of white wine was first introduced in 1989, it was originally called “Caymus Conundrum.” Conundrum is still owned by Caymus Vineyards’ Wagner family, but they split it into a separate brand beginning with the 2001 vintage. In addition to the name change, Conundrum is now made at its own winery in Monterey County, while Caymus remains up in Napa’s Rutherford district.
What Type Of Wine Is Caymus
Caymus Vineyards is known for its flagship Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon. Their signature style is fruit-forward with deep color and elegant, smooth tannins. It’s a wine that ages well, so it can be enjoyed now or cellared. Other non-Cabernet varietals of Caymus wine for sale as part of the Wagner Family of Wine include the very affordable Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon. If you would like to experience an assortment of Caymus wines, we offer a Caymus Vineyards & Wagner Family Wine Tasting Set.

Caymus Wine: The Story Of A Family
In 1971, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and Charles F. Wagner asked their son Chuck Wagner whether he was interested in starting a family wine business. Chuck agreed and the company was born, the fruit of the union of three pioneer families in Californias Napa Valley. Lornas paternal grandfather actually made wine at an old stone winery in Howell Mountain back in the late 1800s before arriving in Napa Valley. Lornas maternal grandparents arrived in Napa in 1857 as part of a wagon train from Bible Grove, Missouri. Meanwhile, the Wagners emigrated in 1906, purchasing 70 acres of land and setting up Honig Winery in 1915. Unfortunately, the Wagner family business was destroyed by Prohibition, which became reality just 4 years later.
Charlie Wagner married Lorna Belle Glos in 1934 and in 1941 they purchased 73 acres of land in Rutherford, which they planted to fruit orchards and to wine grapes. In the 1960s, they decided to devote the entire property to wine grape production, planting Pinot Noir, Johannisberg Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon from cuttings of Fay Vineyard in the Stags Leap District. Back then, the couple sold the grapes they produced to the nearby Inglenook Vineyards and other producers. But in 1971, the plan to produce their own signature wines was hatched, and Caymus Vineyards was born.

Express Your Gratitude To Friends And Loved Ones In A Grand Way By Sending This Caymus Cabernet Gift Basket And Let Them Enjoy The Plush Flavors Of Premium Napa Valley Wine Alongside A Variety Of Delicious Fare
Founded in 1972 by Chuck Wagner, Caymus Vineyards is one of Napa Valleys most celebrated wineries known primarily for their exquisite offerings featuring the regions quintessential varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. Despite decades of near-constant, the winery remained, at its core, a family-owned-and-run company allowing them to focus on producing extraordinary wines free from the constraints that often stifle most corporatized wine producers.
Serving as their signature offering since its establishment, the Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon is a premium red wine offering known for its rich fruit flavors and silky smooth tannins making it a truly decadent treat that is guaranteed to enamor even the most discriminating of drinkers. Each vintage of this wine begins with the grapes being manually harvested, washed, and carefully pressed before undergoing fermentation. After this, the resulting wine is then left to age for several months in oak barrels for several months before finally being bottled and labeled.
Dark, scarlet red in color, each sip of this wine greets its drinker with a luscious bouquet of currants, ripe dark berries, raspberries, cherries, and cocoa which continue well into the multi-layered palate where they are joined by lovely notes vanilla and soft, velvety tannins before wrapping up with an incredibly long-lasting finish.

Winemaking And Wines By The Wagner Family
Caymus Vineyards currently produces two Cabernet Sauvignon wines, the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon. To achieve the flavors and aromas desired in both of these wines, the grapes are left to hang on the vine for longer than those of neighboring properties. During this hang time, the fruit develops a higher maturity of tannins and deeper, more concentrated colors. Although this technique risks losing the fruit if winter comes early and frost destroys the crop, it results in a greater suppleness in the finished wines and an abundance of tannins, which are nevertheless velvet-soft. The vineyard team also practices crop thinning as a way to allow more sunlight to reach the fruit and help ripen them. The Caymus Napa Valley has become known for its signature dark color, along with rich and ripe cassis fruit aromas and soft tannins. The blend includes fruit from eight of Napas 16 sub-appellations: Howell Mountain, Atlas Peak, Oak Knoll, Yountville, Rutherford, St. Helena, Wooden Valley and Calistoga.
Besides Caymus Vineyards and Conundrum, the Wagner Family Wines portfolio also includes brands Meiomi, Mer Soleil and Belle Glos.
