When Nesh Patel first moved to New York City three years ago, picking up groceries and a few bottles of wine from the Trader Joes in Union Square was a ritual.
A deal at the time allowed shoppers to mix and match six bottles and get a discount from the total price. That was what made it super affordable, he recalled.
But last week, he walked by the store and was surprised to see that it had been shuttered: It came out of kind of nowhere, he said, calling it a sort of institution for the area. Its kind of unbelievable that its gone.
Trader Joes only wine store in New York State closed without warning last week, sending some shoppers of the grocery store chain with a cult following into a minor tailspin.
We have been operating our small wine shop in the Union Square neighborhood for over 15 years, and we thank you for your business and support throughout the years, a posted sign read. Theories about the reason for the closing abounded: the impacts of the pandemic, the end of a lease, a new location.

Trader Joe’s Abruptly Closes This Extremely Popular Store
There are many things that shoppers love about Trader Joe’s. From its low prices to unbeatable store brand items and cheese selectioneven cheap flowers! One perk, however, has gained almost a cult followingthe chain’s wine.
Which is why residents who frequented the Trader Joe’s Wine Store in New York City’s Union Square were surprised to see it had abruptly closed on Thursday. According to a note posted on the window, the specialty store was permanently shuttered due to issues with the city.

“We have been operating our small Wine Shop in the Union Square neighborhood for over 15 years, and we thank you for your business and support throughout the years,” a note posted on Reddit read. “It is now time for us to explore another location that will allow us to optimize the potential of our one and only license to sell wine in the state of New York.”
The wine shop was located next to the Trader Joe’s grocery store, which remains open. However, the specialty wine store was the only Trader Joe’s of its kind in the state.
One employee of the wine store offered up information on Reddit about the closure, citing that the wine shop’s undoing may have come as a result of its strained relationship with its landlord New York University.

Trader Joe’s Shuttered Nyc Wine Store To Snuff Out Union Drive Workers Say
The abrupt closure of a popular Trader Joe’s wine store in New York City came just days before its 30 employees were planning to call a union election. Workers had been organizing for months and were ready to go public with the campaign, they told CBS MoneyWatch.
But on August 11, a few days before the planned announcement, the grocery chain suddenly shuttered the location, only informing affected workers of the closure at 12:01 a.m. that very day. Some employees learned that the store was permanently closing its doors when they showed up to work in the morning.
“I found out because I woke up to a million missed calls and texts,” said Robert Bradlea, an employee who worked for four years at the Trader Joe’s wine store and one of the leaders behind the union drive.
“That day was kind of a blur waking up, being punched in the gut and drifting through the next hours, hearing how upset my coworkers were, hearing surprise from people who were used to shopping there,” Bradlea said, adding that more than two-thirds of the workers were in favor of forming a union.
The closing “doesn’t make sense to me, unless they didn’t want to risk a successfully organized store winning a union vote,” Bradlea said. “They are hoping to make an example of us so that other people don’t follow suit.”

Little warning was given ahead of the closure of the Union Square wine store. Customers learned of the news via a printed sign at the 14th Street location. Twitter user @evgrieve documented it a little before 5 p.m. on Thursday, posting a photo of the notice.

Its so popular, more than a billion bottles have been sold.
Its being made for TJ, under a contract, by Bronco Wine. Bronco Wine employs a variety of strategies to keep its overhead very low. This is why TJ gets to sell the wine at such rates. What of Vodka? Vodka at Costco goes for $12.99, while Gin at TJ sells for $11.99.
But I used to regularly buy my tequila, bourbon, and vodka at TJs when I lived in California.
And, for example, I used to buy Puerto Vallarta Tequila Blanco in a 750ml bottle for under 15 bucks. These days that same bottle sells elsewhere for $28.
These days, they mostly sell their private label tequila, but the prices will almost always be better on all alcohol at TJs.
