Selling Wine Bottles On Ebay In The Uk

Dollar Tree Craft Wine Glasses to Sell in My Antique Booth

You can, of course, quite legally sell a bottle of wine on eBayjust not its contents. And unless the said empties are of Bordeaux First Growths such a Mouton Rothschild or Petrus, the value will not make the effort of listing on the online auction worth your while.

Believe it or not, there really is a market for empties of these top wines: rare examples of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild are particularly popular, as each year since the end of the Second World War the Chateau has commissioned different famous artists to create a piece of art for the label, making the bottles exceedingly collectible. Even Prince Charles has had a go, producing a lovely piece for the 2004 vintage!

This trade in empty fine wine bottles does have a darker side attached to it. In recent years, top wine companies have taken to destroying the empties of leading Bordeaux and Burgundy vintages after tasting events, to remove the risk of forgers refilling them with fake wines and selling them on. Top branded empty bottles destined to be fraudulently refilled have reportedly changed hands for as much as £300 a piece.

Aside from eBay, there are other online trading platforms, some of which even specialise in selling wine. Yet they still have to cope with the same issues theyre not designed with the seller in mind. There is no proactivity, they just list the wine and hope

Try finding that on eBay.

Think About Your Branding

Wine is an industry with a lot of opportunity, but because there are so many wine sellers already, you need to stand out. Itâs no longer enough to have a great product when customers can easily browse hundreds of wine brands at the grocery store. You can use Americaâs wine lists to jumpstart your branding if youâre feeling stuck.

Your case of wine should have one or more distinct characteristics. Flavor is important, but so is your eCommerce packaging. Some customers will select a wine because the bottle or packaging looks exciting to them.

Many wine drinkers tend to be higher income, interested in excellence, and focused on quality. Use these characteristics and those found in the best wine lists to guide the type of wine you want to sell. You can also use the following to clarify how you want to be seen by customers:

  • What kind of imagery and wording best represent my wine?
  • What type of experience are those who buy my wine looking for?
  • What wine price is a good fit for my products?
  • Is there anything about my wine or its packaging that conveys a message thatâs inconsistent with my branding?

Your brand doesnât need to be fully materialized before you launch your website, but it should be represented clearly. Using a consistent color scheme, hosting an easy-to-use website, and providing answers to FAQs are important factors to include.

How To Find Out Your Decanters Worth

Identifying the maker of your decanter will help determine its value. Place your decanter on its side between two books so it wont roll. By using a magnifying glass, examine its base for the makers mark. Pay special attention to the center and along the edge.

You may also use a loupe to scrutinize the flat surface of the bottom. Once you find a mark, a decanter price guide will come in handy for reference, such as Millers Antique Handbook and Price Guide and Jim Beam Figural Bottles: An Unauthorized Collectors Guide.

If youre planning on selling your decanter, another factor to consider is its condition. New in the box or mint decanters are more valuable than used ones. Damages, especially around the lip and base, will devalue your decanter.

Additionally, engraving may reduce its selling price. You may also check for rarity and artistic merit as unusual designs are more prized by collectors than common ones.

The Man Who Duped Millionaires Into Paying Big Bucks For Fake Wine

Vintage French wine: How much does a bottle of wine sell for?

Ben Goldstein

He was the man with the nose of a blood hound, as one wine critic once put it.

Rudy Kurniawan was once the toast of the fine-wine world, renowned for his ability to find some of the rarest and priciest wines in the world.

He was also, prosecutors alleged, a fraud who duped some of the countrys wealthiest wine purchasers with counterfeit bottles of wine that he manufactured in his home laboratory.

And on Wednesday, a Manhattan jury agreed, finding Kurniawan guilty of fraud in connection with selling counterfeit wines and of defrauding a finance company.

The sensational trial began Dec. 9 in a Manhattan federal court. Prosecutors have argued that Kurniawan used his exceptional palate to blend together younger wines with older French wines of poor vintage. He then slapped counterfeit labels on the bottles, prosecutors say, and passed them off as some of the rarest wines on Earth. When these bottles turned up at auctions, the excitement of coming across them often overshadowed bidders skepticism of whether they were the real thing.

Among those who believed they were duped is billionaire industrialist Bill Koch yes, a brother to those Kochs who said he spent $2.1 million on 219 bottles of Kurniawans wine.

Ive never known him not to bring a bottle, testified Truly Hardy, director of auction operations for Acker Merrall & Condit.

How To Sell Port Wine

Once youve determined the approximate value of your port, you can start the selling process. By far the easiest, safest, and most legal method for selling port wine is to locate a trustworthy, licensed merchant or auction house that has experience selling fortified wines. You will have to pay a fee to the seller if you want to sell port wine using this method, but very often the fee is well worth the price of admission. An experienced merchant or auction house will take care of every detail of the sale, including:

  • The audience/buyer .
  • The wine sales license and any interstate shipping regulations or costs.
  • The full description of the bottle .
  • Storage space while the wine is in the process of being sold.
  • Payment and transfer of ownership details.
  • Specific payment and shipment guarantees.
  • Insurance for damage or theft.

The fee for this type of service is often very reasonable, depending on the merchant or auction house that you choose. Here are some of the most common fees youll come across when you sell port wine through a professional:

A seller will typically charge you just one of the fees above. However, in some cases, a seller may have both a fixed fee and a separate insurance fee, or a sliding scale fee and an insurance fee. Before you choose a seller, ask them how they calculate their fees and, if possible, request a fee estimate in writing in advance.

Be Specific About The Bottle Type

A Bordeaux bottle is different from a Riesling bottle which is different from a Champagne bottle. You can absolutely sell a mixed box, but since youll probably be selling in smaller quantities than corks you should get specific as to exactly what you have. Good news: unlike their corks, Champagne bottles do sell!

What Happens After Your Buyer Bids

If you sell your wine via auction house or online marketplace, shipping is usually already included. The professional sellers already have contracts with shipping companiesyou simply supply the wine. However, if you decide to sell the wine on your own, youll need to consider a complex set of legal steps before your buyer can buy it. You must:

  • Get a wine-selling license through your state
  • Get approval from your state to ship wine to your buyers location
  • Check that your buyers state allows wine shipments
  • Contact a trustworthy shipping company
  • Pack the wine according to the companys standards
  • Send the wine to your buyer

In some cases, you might be denied a shipping license, which means you cant sell your wine at all. This is why the sales fees for auction houses or online marketplaces are often worth the extra cost. Heres what happens when you ship via an online marketplace:

The last step is the most important one for your buyers. A collector who spends thousands of dollars on a top-tier bottle of DRC wants to ensure that the bottle they are buying is authentic and reaches them safely. Selling your wine through other websites like eBay doesnt necessarily guarantee authenticity or a refund for heat damage. Experienced collectors prefer to shop with retailers who offer them shipping thats specifically designed with wine in mind.

How To Determine The Resale Value Of Your Wine

Producers and terroirs that have excellent reputations among collectors will often fetch a premium price. A producer’s overall ranking will usually get you within $100 of the actual market value of the wine, but if you want to find out exactly how much your wine is worth you’ll need to read critic scores for the vintage. Factors like market timing, storage history, provenance, and terroir also impact how much your wine is worth on the secondary market. Consider all of these aspects before you sell your wine. The Backstory To Selling Wine From Canada

Having managed wine storage facilities in Canada since 2004, and working on private cellars across the country, we frequently get asked to assist collectors in sell some or all of their wine. Typical reasons include estate sales, health matters, divorce, debt, etc. Many people realize that their palate has changed since they started collecting and theyre long in California Cabernet, for example, a wine they no longer enjoy.

Iron Gate began by working with US auction houses in 2008 to send Canadian collections south for sale. We would manage all the logistics, inventory, etc. and see the sale through to the client receiving funds.

While many clients were pleased with the results, others preferred not to have the risk associated with auctions in a very competitive market like the US. For this reason we began to form relationships with retailers outside of Canada who would offer a fixed price for the wine which they then resold at their stores.

In 2015 with the help of a US partner we began to look at the possibility of opening a retail outlet in NY. The concept was simple. The wine would come to our facility in Toronto for inventory and photography. It would then ship to a facility in Buffalo, NY where is would be held until sold. Title would pass in the United States through our US retail liquor license and the seller would be paid in USD from our US corporation.

How To Sell Your Wine: A Complete Guide To Liquidating Your Fine Wine Collection

MENTIONED IN THIS POST:

Selling your wine involves more than knowing how much your bottles are worth. You could own an incredibly rare Lafite Rothschild vintage, but if you dont know the best way to sell it, you might miss out on hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of dollars in profits. You should consider the best price to charge for your wine, as well as which selling platform will meet your needs. Youll also want to take advantage of yearly market trends to attract the perfect buyer. Here are the major steps in the wine selling process:

  • Determine when its time to sell your wine
  • Calculate the exact value of your bottles
  • Find a reliable selling platform that attracts the right buyers
  • Sell your bottles during peak market months
  • Safely ship the wine to your buyers via a trustworthy wine sales company
  • How To Determine The Value Of Your Vintage Wine

Once you have decided which of your wine bottles you want to sell, you must then determine the value of each bottle. There are two types of values attributed to vintage wines, inherent value and real value. The inherent value of a bottle of wine is determined by how it was produced, where the grapes were grown, its classification, and the reputation and techniques of the maker. The real value is determined by its life after bottling, including how it has been stored and the number of different owners it has had. Wine bottles high in both inherent and real value bring the best prices.

    Three: Ask A Professional

You found a number. Thats great. But dont get excited or disappointed yet. Past sales, provenance and physical conditionfrom label to cork and everything in betweenare part of a bottles evaluation. If you think your bottle is worth at least $250, talk to a professional.

What matters most, says John Kapon, chairman of Acker Wines, is that the person who appraises the bottle understands the wine market, as well as pricing for specific producers and vintages.

Kapon estimates Acker, a retailer and auction house, has appraised 10 million bottles in the 20 years its held auctions. Like other big houses, it generally deals in quantity, or collections that range from 30 to 3,000 bottles. Single bottles it considered recently include a 2017 Roumier Echézeaux, a 2017 Screaming Eagle magnum and a 2006 Château Pontet-Canet magnum. The pricing of these bottles hasnt been made public.

Shaun Bishop, CEO of JJ Buckley Fine Wines, recalls a client who wished to sell a bottle of 1963 Quinta do Noval Port, worth about $250. After examination, Bishop says, it turned out the bottling was actually the much-rarer label called Quinta do Noval Nacional Port. Its value is around $3,500. The client was very happy.

An appraiser may determine a wines value based on questions like where it was bought, receipts from the sale and how its been stored, says Charles Antin, head of auction sales and auctioneer for Zachys Wine Auctions. And, of course, theyll want to inspect the wine.
