They were looking for an alternative to their busy lifestyle in New Jersey and decided to grow grapes for Taylor Wine Co. Land was cheap at about $300 an acre, he recalled, and just a few vineyardists were growing grapes for wine.
Today, Seneca Lake is home to 65 wineries. New York state reached a milestone of 400 wineries this spring. There were 13 in the state prior to 1975, and 35 between 1976 and 1984, according to the New York Wine and Grape Foundation. The Farm Winery Act of 1976 encouraged the growth of smaller wineries after the big companies pulled out of most of their local contracts.
Between 1986 and 2015, 351 new wineries were formed, with 131 launched since 2011. That also has meant a hefty boost in wine-related tourism. And it is putting Finger Lakes wineries on the international map for wine connoisseurs and foodies.
A shift in consumer tastes favoring small boutique wineries is helping to drive the growth for Finger Lakes products. Consumers enjoy getting to know the story behind each winery and the vintners vision of the wines.
The world is getting smaller and theres a cachet to New York, Martini said.

Investment-grade fine wines are distinguished from mass-market peers by their ability to age, their value on the secondary market, and producersâ long track record for excellence, according to Brian Ward, director of wine for the Winston Art Group.3 In the global hierarchy of fine wines, most collectors look to the famous regions of France for truly transcendent bottles. Bordeaux, which produces some 900 million bottles yearly, or nearly 1.5% of the worldâs wine supply,4 leads the pack, usually followed by Burgundy.
However, only a tiny fraction of Bordeaux sold comes from any of the five First Growth chateaus deemed to be la crème de la crème of collectable wine â Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Latour, Chateau Margaux, Chateau Haut-Brion, and Chateau Mouton Rothschild. There might not be a moat, infinity pool or helipad for now but there are ways to get into the vineyard world without spending millions. One is to just buy the vines. Dakin highlights a 10ha vineyard in Terrasses du Larzac, Languedoc, listed for 300,000.
French land agency Safer said last year that AP vineyards in France cost an average 74,900/ha in 2019. Many areas were well below this, with averages of 20,000 in Ventoux, southern Rhône 16,000 in Faugères, Languedoc and 12,000 in Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine, Loire.
Dakin adds that beginning a négociant-style operation without a vineyard is another way of dipping into the wine scene. You can start a business on a shoestring, but if you want to make it from your own vineyards then youve got to have capital and be prepared to wait a few years.
There are several ways to run the winemaking. If its a hobby vineyard thats just for fun, then having a go yourself could be part of the experience. On a more commercial level even if you dont expect a profit you might outsource the process to a local cooperative and buy some wine back under your own label.
Other options range from fully employing staff, contracting out vineyard work or recruiting winemaking specialists to help. However you go about it, running a vineyard can be hard work. New York State wineries may ship up to 36 cases of wine per year directly to a New York resident for personal use. The winery must require the purchaser to provide proof they are 21 or over, and that the wine is for personal use and not for resale.
