Our Rating 5/5

You can buy Firstleaf membership plans and do the tasting quiz for your recipient if you know their tastes or leave it to them. There are also gift cards so I give it a 5.

Firstleaf gifts include eGift Cards ranging from $25 to $200, unlike customized wine club subscriptions. You can add the name of the recipient as well as a personal message. These are sent to the recipient directly and if you wish to do so yourself, add yourself as the recipient before forwarding it along.

Firstleaf Review: Is This Wine Club Worth It

This wine subscription box offers an introductory box which contains three bottles of wine for $15 a month . If youre not a devout lover of great wine or youre just looking to dip your toes in the water with this wine club subscription, the introductory box is a great option .

However, I delved straight into the Firstleaf wine subscription and ordered their club box, which runs $79.98 and $9.95 for shipping. In my club shipment, I received a whopping six bottles of wine!

Before I get too deep into my Firstleaf wine subscription service review, Im going to be discussing the overall value of Firstleaf wine club by looking at:

  • The quality of the wines and bottles I received with the wine subscription

About Firstleaf Wine Club

Firstleaf is an online wine club that specializes in providing a tailored, award-winning wine subscription service.

Firstleafs founder, Philip James, created the company with the goal of creating the most customer-centric wine club in the wine industry, providing great wine for a surprisingly affordable price.

And its working Firstleaf has over 100,000 happy members!

What sets Firstleaf apart from other wine clubs is the way they partner directly with various wineries and winemakers. Firstleaf Wine Club Customer Reviews

For this FirstLeaf Wine subscriptions review, we decided to take a good look at the customer and members reviews, so we checked not only the brands official website, but also other review websites such as Trustpilot, Reviewopedia, and Consumers Advocate. While most reviews are highly positive, there were some mixed reviews as well.

Mixed reviews revealed that they had had issues canceling their subscription, which led to more unwanted shipments. The company then decided to make subscription cancellations possible by email, phone, and straight from customers accounts on the FirstLeaf website. Other customers highlighted the shipping carriers are not always very efficient, as parcels are lost or broken due to the fragility of the items. In response, FirstLeaf now offers ground shipping, so your package is better protected during the delivery.

On the other hand, happy customers among the thousands of faithful members proved to be die-hard wine lovers. They raved about the customer services excellent communication and reactivity, the variety and deliciousness of wines, and the easy, well-packed parcels. The ability to delay parcel shipments also turned out to be a feature that many members enjoy.

One customer writes: All good. The wines are varied and tasty. The delivery is easy and well packed. In several years as a monthly member, I have had only one minor issue and the company quickly resolved it. Great communication and customer service.

Dont Overspend On White

Elizabeth Schneider, host of the Wine for Normal People podcast, told us most clubs arent really offering you a savings. Theyre acting as both the distributor and the retailer, so theyre cutting out all this margin that you would normally have to pay. But then they mark it up. It should be cheaper, but in reality youre likely paying the same amount of money, she said. Once you factor in the cost of shipping and sales tax, the average price per bottle increases even more.

A lot of clubs selling private-label wines claim they are rare or exclusive, which is technically true since the label is unique to their subscription service and often cant be bought elsewhere. But thats not an indication of quality, nor is it a reason to charge more for wines that may cost significantly less to make. You can find similar-quality wines at lower prices from stores like Costco, Trader Joes, or BevMo. So it may not be worth it to buy these types of wines through a wine club, unless your biggest priority is the convenience of home delivery. Also, these brick-and-mortar stores can typically offer a better deal for their wines because theyre bought in bulk. You can also find plenty of great wines for under $20 at your local wine shop.

A lot of people just assume wine is a pastoral agricultural product. But the vast majority of wine is as much a processed product as breakfast cereal. Eric Asimov

Thing Not To Love About Firstleaf

Even though there were several things we loved about Firstleaf, no subscription service is perfect.

Here’s 1 thing not to love about Firstleaf:

1. Nichelessness

Customizable wine subscriptions are a dime a dozen, but each offers something that the others dont except for Firstleaf. Some focus on rare wines, some on wines with remarkable origins, and some make their own wines. Firstleaf makes buying great wine easy like other companies that offer a unique approach to wine curation.

This can, of course, be a plus point too if you are always on for an adventure.

Is Firstleaf Wine Club Worth It

In this Firstleaf Wine Club review, we provide our impression on the Firstleaf Wine Club, and whether or not its worth the money.

Since youre getting the wine directly from Firstleaf, theyre passing savings on to you. The convenience of previewing the shipment, setting your delivery date, and making desired changes online is helpful. Including shipping, the cost of $15 per bottle is very reasonable.

For these reasons along with various positive reviews and other information contained in this Firstleaf review, we feel the Firstleaf Wine Club is worth trying out.

Describe The Process Of Launching The Business

Looking back, our launch was more of a stone toss than a launch. We were two people managing everything traveling to take the videos, writing all the notes, packing the boxes, editing the myriad videos, all while running a busy wine bar, and in Italy meaning lightyears behind in technology, utilizing Gravity Forms and PayPal to collect data from the subscriptions and managing everything with a manual entry in excel. Archaic.

We know it often takes up to 7 touches for people to buy. Collecting emails to maintain a near-constant engagement has been crucial to our success.

Launching the Roscioli Wine Club was little more than sending a newsletter to maybe 10,000 subscribers via Mailchimp and promoting it nightly during our famous Wine and Food Tasting Dinner.

At that time we said wed be happy with 1,000 members and that became our goal. Over time weve adjusted our goal to be closer to 2,000 members, but beyond that, it would be quite challenging to offer the quality of wines that we provide now from small family-run wineries with annual productions of less than a few hundred cases of each wine.

Firstleaf Red Wines Review

For subscribers of Firstleaf, there are different kinds of wine choices they can settle for. Even their favorite wine color has numerous types in a bid to settle wine lovers. Amongst the numerous types, one would find Cabernet Sauvignon, which has varieties for the treating of customers preferences.

But explaining what Cabernet Sauvignon is all about, it is pertinent to understand that it is one of the worlds most widely-recognized wine grape varieties. Often referred to as the King of Redwine Grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon has its roots firmly in France, especially in Bordeaux.

Wine lovers typically view it as a type of wine that is fairly robust with appealing acidity, and rich-fruit flavor components. It is affordable, as the price ranges from $19 to $26.

Offering rich-fruity flavors, and average tannin levels, Malbec, which is under Firstleafs red wines category, has a higher quantity of alcohol compared to other types of red wines. It is low in sugar, plum, and cherry flavors. The price ranges from $17 to $23.

You can categorize this type of red wine into two, which are New World Malbec, and the Old World. Compared to the latter, the former is softer and less tannic.

Other Firstleaf red wines are -Merlot, Pinot Noir, amongst others.

About This Firstleaf Review

Firstleaf Review & Taste Test: Is This The Most Personalized Wine Club?

Ive been reviewing Firstleaf since August 2018, roughly a year and a half after they opened for business. Since then Ive received six separate shipments of their wine, totalling 33 different wines either produced by them or their partners. I am still actively reviewing their service and recently received a shipment in February 2021. This review incorporates my Firstleaf experiences along the way and my experience with more than 100 other wine clubs.

Any wine subscription service is about more than just the wine and this review covers all aspects of the service. The key things I look for in a wine club are: How was the wine sourced? Is the wine selection personalized or curated? How often does it ship? How well does the company communicate about shipping and billing? Do they offer a satisfaction guarantee? Are the shipment sizes and wine selection flexible?

I also examine what kind of wine education they offer with their bottles and whether or not a service is set up for good gifting. These aspects are not core to a wine club being worthwhile, but they are important for many would-be members.

I have a couple of gripes about Firstleaf :

First, when you are shown your recommended wines and given the chance to swap bottles, they show you some of the awards , but not specifics about who issued the awards. When you then click on the View Wine Details link to see more info, they dont expand on the awards. This is what a wine looks like when its been recommended to you.

Firstleaf Wine Club: Customer Service

As mentioned above, Firstleaf offers a great money back guarantee, though youll have to discuss the refund with their customer service first. This is especially useful during summer, when the heat is liable to damage the wine.

As for shipping, it goes through UPS and typically takes 2 to 5 days . It comes with cardboard protection, which is much better than the usual Styrofoam if youre environmentally minded . They are rather insistent on there being someone older than 21 to sign for the shipment.

Firstleaf Wine Flavors And Quality

After hearing that the Firstleaf team samples over 10,000 wines annually, I was not worried about the quality of wine I was getting. Among the six bottles I received, the flavor profiles were rich and decadent with some light citrusy notes and deeper spiced fruit varieties. Though I usually prefer red wine, I thoroughly enjoyed all the selections Firstleaf sent me. These were the bottles in my box:
