Best Botanical: The Botanist Islay Dry Gin

The Botanist is a Scottish gin made on Islay, the region best known for its smoky, peated scotch. The Botanist incorporates a whole lot of local flavors by using locally foraged botanicals around their distillery, said Smith. They managed to put quite a lot of botanicals together that works in a remarkably harmonious way. Sometimes local flavors means this wont really taste like gin, but thats not the case with The Botanist. This gin is a rich and cohesive experience on the palate.

Chicago distillery KOVAL puts its flagship Dry Gin in its own whiskey barrels to create this barrel-aged version. This infuses the already-fragrant bouquet on the palate with notes of oak, vanilla, and butterscotch. This is a gin that is complex enough to sip neat, but it also works wonderfully as a whiskey substitute in drinks like an Old Fashioned and brings an extra layer of flavor to a Negroni.

Gordons London Dry Gin

Never in a million years would I have realized that Gordons gin tastes like rosewater. But these are the kinds of weird revelations one has in a blind tasting. While sipping her Gordons martini with a faraway gaze in her eyes, Tammie said, Id like to drink this with Moroccan food. Gordons hits first with juniper for a split second, then the rest is intensely sweet, floral, and a little bit fruity. This flavor profile makes for an interesting martini. A Rare Visit To Hendricks Gin Palace

Tucked away on the coast of Ayrshire in Scotland is a palace thats off-limits to the public : Hendricks Gin Palace, an invite-only destination where visitors can immerse themselves in the creation of the liquor, with access strictly contained to trade partners and a scant few industry VIPs. Its a temple to the Rube Goldberglike eccentricity thats synonymous with Hendricks, festooned with taxidermy peacocks and a hothouse that grows Buddhas hand and similarly freakish varieties of citrus.

Ordinary gin lovers have never been inviteduntil now. Hendricks will welcome a Robb Report reader and their guests, wholl be squired round the site by the British brands own master distiller, and industry legend, Lesley Gracie. Shell showcase her lab, where she devises the latest expressions of the gin, and give a sneak peek of whatever shes mulling to add to the assortment soon.

Master Distiller Leslie Gracie

Hired by William Grant & Sons, Leslie Gracie was tasked with the responsibility of creating a new premium gin. Besides her selection of beautiful botanicals, she incorporated the use of two stills, the Bennet and the Carter-Head. The latter is an extremely rare copper still from 1948 which uses a basket to hold and gently steam the botanicals during distillation. This method produces a softer, more elegant and delicate expression of the gin. The Bennet, on the other hand, is a common still found in many distilleries today. It slowly infuses the spirit overnight by steeping the botanicals. This results in a complex and richly flavored gin. The combination of the two spirits from the respective stills are what makes Hendricks Gin so unique. You can see that all of these components helps drive Hendricks Gin costs.

What Is London Dry Gin

Though its name hints otherwise, London Dry gin is defined not by geography but by process. Its made by redistilling neutral alcohol with predominantly juniper, plus a variety of natural aromaticsand no artificial flavorings or colorings. For a gin to be classified as London Gin, the European Union legislation of spirits definitions and labeling says the flavor can come only from the botanicals added in the second distillation. This means that gins with natural flavors added after distillation are not London Dry gintheyre technically distilled gin.

Plymouth is technically not a London Dry gin because, up until 2015, gin produced in Plymouth, England, was considered to be a distinct style, protected by a geographical indication . But that protection ended when Pernod-Ricardthe conglomerate that owns the brand Plymouth Gin, now the only gin actually produced in Plymouth. Flavor-wise, Plymouth is very much like London Dry gin, but everything is a bit more smoothed out and cohesive .
