Best Grocery Store Champagne Under $20

Is Champagne Bullshit? | How to Drink

These four are the best grocery store champagne for when you want to drink bubbly. I love these for just sipping on and enjoying with a meal or on their own. They are consistent in their flavor and will never leave you disappointed. They are my go to grocery store brands because I can always count on them to be around and they pair well with just about everything.

Chandon Brut

This is constant, always giving you a consistent flavor. When I am at a restaurant and they have splits, this is typically what I order. Its crisp as youd expect from a brut and very easy to sip on and enjoy.

Mumm Napa Brut Prestige

Another one of my go-tos when I am out and cant find my favorite local wineries. This is an award winning bubbly that also is very consistent in the taste youll get. Its crisp, but has a bit of a vanilla aroma as well. And I really love that toasty, vanilla-y flavor.

Rosé All Day Sparkling Rosé

Super fun, right? This is actually harvested and bottled in France. I love the pink color and while it may have a strawberry aroma, I dont find this overly sweet . I do like it chilled a bit more, so in my perfect world, I drink this at about 40 degrees.

Meiomi Sparkling Wine

Another consistent bubbly. This one has a green apple aroma. If you dont like hints of yeast or minerals, this one isnt for you.

Champagnes Climate And Wine Growing Areas

The Champagne region is located in the northeast corner of France, about 100 miles east of Paris. The regions cool temperatures make it difficult for the grapes to ripen, but this factor also provides the perfect environment to grow grapes with high levels of acidity, which is ideal for making sparkling wine.

Of the five growing areas, Côte de Sézanne and Côte des Blancs grow mainly Chardonnay. Côte des Bar and Montagne de Reims grow mainly Pinot Noir, while the Vallée de la Marne grows both Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Combined, the five areas include 17 Grand Cru villages and 42 with Premiere Cru ranking.

Make Sure My Bottle Is Chilled

Champagne should be drunk chilled in order to appreciate its finesse and aromas to the full. Chilled but not ice-cold! The ideal temperature for a bottle of Champagne is between about 8-10°C.

To get it right, put the bottle in an ice bucket half filled with water and ice, from 20 to 30 minutes before serving. You can also put it in the bottom of the fridge a few hours before you open it.

The wines ofChampagne are fine, lively wines. They express themselves best when served chilled but never “shocked”. The ideal way to chill Champagne wines is gradually, by immersing the bottle into a bucket of ice cubes. These wines get their unique character from their terroir, the harsh northern climate and the implantation of the vines on well-draining slopes. The Champagne region is divided into four main areas: Montagne de Reims, Vallee de la Marne, Cote des Blancs and Cote de Bar. The vineyards of Champagne are planted with three main grape varieties, including the Chardonnay , Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir . Champagne comes in a wide range of styles, including Blanc de Blanc, Blanc de Noirs and rosé! A champagne bottle can also come in a wide range of sizes, called formats.

Opening And Serving A Bottle Of Champagne

Opening a bottle of Champagne can be an impressive sight. The pressure in the bottle can send the cork flying, especially if the bottle has been shaken up a bit… Take care not to hurt somebody! A gentle touch and a little circumspection are in order. If you follow this advice, dont worry: everything will be fine!

Once its at the ideal temperature, around 8-10°C, take the bottle out of the fridge or ice bucket. Wipe it with a cloth if necessary.

Start by removing the muselet and its foil cap, with the help of the tear strip provided or by untwisting the loop on the muselet. Take care to keep a firm grip on the cork and dont point the bottle at anyone.

Next, still keeping a firm hold on the cork, grasp the bottles body and rotate it gently, removing the cork from the neck without letting it escape. Once youve got the cork out, you can amuse yourself by checking that it actually includes the term Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée Champagne and, if applicable, the vintage year.

At last the time has come to pour the Champagne. You should do this in two stages: first of all, a small quantity. Take a few moments to breathe in its aromas, enough time for the wine to aerate a little. Then fill the glass, pouring the Champagne slowly and regularly until its two-thirds full.

This roundup was edited by Jesse Porter, who’s worked as a sommelier for several excellent Champagne programsand yet who finds it challenging to maintain a decent Champagne collection at home, as they tend to pair so nicely with pretty much any meal.

How Do You Properly Store Champagne

Store your Champagne like you would any other fine wine: on its side in a cool, low-light environment. “Cellar temperature” is ideal, but even if you don’t have a wine fridge that maintains this temperature, you can get away with keeping your bubbly in a dark closet or cabinet where it will be away from its two main nemeses, heat and light. But don’t store your Champagne in the regular refrigerator: the vibrations from the motor and the frequent light will disturb the wine and may alter its taste.

Blending Dosing And Aging

Champagne Barons de Rothschild Ritz Brut NV (375mL)

The production process isnt so different from that of other wines, but there are some notable differences. Rather than just blending base wines from various parcels and varieties, as in the case of most still wines, it allows for a blend of various parcels, various varieties and various vintages as well. In fact, most of the wines of the region is sold as Non-Vintage or NV to designate a blend of different vintages, with some reserve wines from previous years blended in with the current vintage. Originally, this process was a way of mediating the effects of a poor vintage in a region with plenty of climate variation. In certain exceptional years, however, many brands do release Vintage Champagne produced exclusively from grapes harvested in that year. These Vintage Champagnes are usually made to age longer and represent the higher end of the quality spectrum. Famously, the Dom Perignon cuvee is always a Vintage cuvée and is never produced as a non-vintage wine.

Overall Experience & Value For Money

The box is beautiful with its cream and red and gold colours. Its bold, just like the champagne, but its still retained some elegance, again, just like the champagne! The plaque is equally regal. I wouldnt say its ornate. Were looking at more kind of an Imperial presentation with a bold shield in black with 1829, the house name and Äy, which is where its made.

As for the cork, the cork hasnt retained its original shape. It hasnt puffed out as you would want from a high-quality cork. That being said, it has been sitting probably in this bottle for quite a while. Then again, theyre also rested for three months after theyve been corked.

It should expand eventually to a relatively cylindrical shape, but that hasnt happened just yet. Otherwise, its a good quality cork, nice and firm, and it does bounce back, but here does feel a little bit stiff.

As for the occasion, Bollinger is very versatile champagne that you can drink for a variety of occasions. Its going to be more champagne that you would accompany with a meal or as a starter. This isnt something that I would consider really as just an apéritif.

It can be also enjoyed on special occasions. Indeed, this is probably one of the best of the major house standard non-vintage Cuvées that you can enjoy for a lavish moment, but you can also drink it casually with some friends.

Is Champagne Region Worth Visiting

If youre a huge fan of champagne or just want to see something different in France, visiting Champagne is well worth the trip. They were discovered to be so special that they were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

A Coat Is A Must In The Evening, And Youll Want To Layer Up During The Day.

If you are attending a champagne house party in style, you must be prepared. If you want to stay warm in the evening, its best to layer up in the morning. In Champagnes cool northern climate, a coat is required in the evening and a layer is required at night. The temperature of the wine cellar should be at least 10oC. Wear shoes that are both comfortable and practical during the day. On foot, cellar tours and winery tours can include climbing steep flights of stairs and uneven terrain. If youre attending a champagne house party, think about what to wear.

What Sort Of Glass Should I Enjoy My Champagne In

Food Theory: You Are Drinking Your Champagne WRONG!

People often believe that the best way to serve Champagne is in a flute or coupe. Actually, these two shapes arent best suited to expressing its full character! Choose a tall , bulbous glass with a narrow top, shaped like a tulip. Your Champagne will then be able to deploy all its aromas and fine bubbles.

Of course, if youd rather serve Champagne in flutes or coupes, what with all the sophistication and imagination that these legendary objects from the Belle Époque and cinema embody, you can do that instead!

Grapes And Types Of Champagne

Real Champagne must be produced with approved grape varietals: Pinot Noir , Pinot Meunier , and Chardonnay being by far the most commonly used grapes in champagnes. Other approved grapes include Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Petit Meslier, and Arbane.

The primary types of Champagne are Blanc de Blancs, Blanc de Noirs, and Rosé, indicating the varieties and the colors of the grapes used.

Blanc de Blancs means the champagneis made using 100% Chardonnay its light and dry taste make this type of Champagne a popular choice for apértifs.

Blanc de Noirs are white champagnes made from the black grape varieties of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Blanc de Noirs Champagnes tend to be richer and full-bodied.

Pink or Rosé champagnes are produced by adding a small amount of Pinot Noir or by pressing the grape skins .

Most champagnes are non-vintage , meaning they are made from a blend of wines made from grapes from different years, as opposed to one years harvest for vintage or millesimé Champagne .

Vintage Champagnes typically reflect the qualities of a single year. Each Champagne house decides whether it will produce a Vintage Champagne in any given year. Non-Vintage Champagnes, on the other hand, reflect a signature house style that tastes consistent year after year.

Chloe Jeong / Liquor

Looking for the best bottle of Champagne can be a fun, relatively easy process. First, know that Champagne is defined by sparkling wine that comes from the Champagne region of France. Though winemakers in California make a Champagne-style sparkling wine, this style of wine made outside of Champagne is merely sparkling wine.

Not just for special occasions, Champagnes are available in an array of styles and price points for nightly imbibing. On the more affordable side, look for non-vintage-dated brut bottlings, which are typically the entry-level house style Champagnes of most producers. But dont miss out on opportunities to drink vintage-dated bottles from some of the best years in recent decades: 2012, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2004 and 2002. Additionally, look for Premier Cru or Grand Cru on a label, which indicates the Champagne is from vineyards of top quality like our top choice the Krug Grande Cuvée Brut. With that said, here are the best Champagnes to drink now.

How To Pair Champagne With Food

The Champagne Cocktail

Champagne on its own is quite an indulgence. But if youre looking to pair it with a snack or a meal, you might as well dive headfirst into decadence. As an appetizer, sip on Champagne alongside a soft French cheese like a baked, triple-cream brie with toasted pecans on top. For entrees, anything salty or fried will balance the acidity in the wine nicely. Try it with fried oysters or smoked salmon if youre a seafood lover, or crispy fried chicken or stuffed mushrooms for a thoroughly enjoyable culinary experience. For dessert, avoid overly sweet dishes as theyll compete with the dryness of the Champagne. Alternatively, pair like-with-like and pop a Demi Sec or Doux bottle.
