What Is St Germain

St. Germain is made from elderflower, a flower that is used to make cordials, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks. Elderflower grows in the United Kingdom and it is a tradition to use them to make homemade cordials in the summertime. In 2007, the elderflower liqueur was released under the name St. Germain, giving this versatile spirit a more prominent place on the liquor store shelves. St. Germain pairs nicely with not only champagne but also gin, vodka, white wine, and whiskey. It can also be enjoyed over ice on its own.

Ingredients For This Champagne Cocktail

  • St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur The star of the show! This liqueur is wonderfully floral and aromatic without being overwhelming, which is why is pairs with dry champagne so famously. Dont substitute this ingredient with any other liqueur, as the results simply wont be the same.
  • Lemon Juice For the best flavor, you must use freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  • Champagne When choosing a bottle of champagne, try to be a bit selective. While you dont necessarily need a top shelf bottle, avoid cheaper bottles. Remember that the quality of your champagne really determines the quality of the cocktail as a whole.
  • Club Soda club soda or seltzer will do the trick.
  • Rosemary This garnish is optional, but highly recommended! The aromatic experience of fresh rosemary combined with the floral essence of St. Germain is lovely.

The blushing pink color of this cocktail should be enough to encourage you to make this recipe. How adorable does that look?

If you do give this a try, youll find its light, refreshing, tart, sweet, and floral with just a few bubbles to boot.

Rosé vodka was new to me, and if you cant find it, just add extra rosé to the mix. Although, I would go for something slightly sweeter in that case.

How To Garnish It

Half of the fun of cocktails is the garnish! For this St Germain cocktail, you can use just about anything. Here weve shown it with fresh rosemary because we had some on hand, and it gives it a bit more of a holiday drink vibe. But you can also serve it with a lemon twist. Heres how to make a lemon twist without any special tools.

Best Cocktail Shaker To Use And A Substitute

Its worth buying a cocktail shaker if you make cocktails often! It quickly chills cocktails by shaking them against ice. It has a perforated lid so you can easily strain out the cocktail. Heres the one we use:

What if I dont have a cocktail shaker? You dont need to be a semi-professional mixologist to make this St Germain champagne cocktail. Use a glass mason jar instead! Place the cocktail in the jar and fill it with ice, then screw on the top and shake. Use a mesh strainer when you pour out the cocktail to keep the ice inside the mason jar.

St Germain And Champagne: Which Champagne To Use

When Im combining St. Germain and champagne, I like to reach for a dryer, more brut champagne.

St. Germain is slightly sweet, so the sweetness of the elderflower balances nicely with the dry champagne and also brings out any floral notes in it as well.

If you dont love champagne , feel free to substitute your favorite sparkling wine, such as prosecco or cava, instead.

Get more info on each of these options in my champagne 101 guide, which explains how to choose the right bottle. I recommend choosing one in the $10-20 range.

Dry champagne, which will say brut on the label, is a good pick to pair with the sweetness of the elderflower.

This NYE cocktail is fantastic and you definitely need to make a round of them for your New Years party!

History Of The St Germain Cocktail

Liquor pioneer Rob Cooper created his own exclusive brand of Elderflower Liqueur in 2007. Its made from fresh elderflowers handpicked every year in late spring. Theres only a two or three-week window, so speed is of the essence when it comes to making this delicate botanical liqueur.

Over 1,000 fresh elderflower blossoms go into one bottle! While many people tend to associate Elder trees with the English countryside, the elderflowers in this liqueur actually come from France.

When the elderflower liqueur was launched, Simon Difford created the delicious cocktail, also known as the Elderflower Spritz. The contemporary recipe calls for sparkling wine or Champagne, but the original recipe created by Difford called for Sauvignon Blanc.

Either choice works well, as the delicate elderflowers give the effervescent wine a lightly sweet and floral taste. This liqueur is also a beautiful golden yellow color, which is naturally derived from the elderflower pollen.

Why Should I Torch Rosemary As A Garnish

This is an amazingly aromatic trick I learned from one of the seasoned bartenders I used to work with. There are many cocktails out there that go well with rosemary flavors and benefit from the bold scent. When you lightly torch rosemary, it releases a lot of aroma that fills the room and stays around the cocktail glass. While taking a sip, you will breathe in the aroma, and it will enhance the overall flavor of the cocktail!

Blackberries are fresh, juicy, and wonderfully sweet.

Theyre not as sweet as blueberries, but theyre also not as sour as raspberries, making them a great middle ground.

Since they have earthy notes, theyll only get better when you add the florals of elderflower. Plus, theyll have the most amazingly intense color.

Tips For A Better Cocktail

St-Germain and Pisco Champagne Cocktail | Bruno Mars Recipe | Happiest Hour

Here are my tips for making the best version of this elderflower champagne cocktail:

Choose a floral gin. I like Hendricks for its floral and botanical notes. I would stay away from flavors of pine and juniper that might not pair as well with the delicate floral taste of St. Germain.

Choose a bottle of dry champagne. St. Germain is a sweet liqueur, so you dont want to add more sweetness to this cocktail. Stick with a bottle that says brut on the label for the ultimate flavor magic.

Use a pretty garnish. I used a lemon twist, but you can use a cocktail pick or lemon wedge if you like.

What Is A St

A St-Germain champagne cocktail is called a St-Germain Spritz. It is made with St-Germain elderflower liqueur, prosecco, and a splash of club soda.

With only a week until New Years Eve, its time to toast the occasion with a glass of champagne. Cocktails can be elegant, sophisticated, or simply enjoyable. It only takes five minutes to prepare and serve, with three ingredients and a garnish. To achieve the best balance of flavor, brut champagne is the best choice. Extra dry champagne is more flavorful than brut champagne, but it is also less sweet. If you dont have the option of using champagne, use dry prosecco instead. A bartender who has worked for decades taught me this incredible trick.

In a champagne flute, combine St. Germain and lemon juice with club soda. Pour a few drops of champagne at a time as you go to top off your day with this. Toasted Rosemary is an option. To aromatically heat the rosemary stems, gently torch some of them with a kitchen torch.

What Kind Of Champagne Should I Use

For the best balance of flavor, use brut champagne. Brut champagne is slightly less sweet than extra dry champagne, and much less sweet than dry champagne. Since you will be using a sweet St. Germain liqueur, you dont want the champagne to be too sweet, otherwise the cocktail will taste far too sugary.

If you dont have the option to use champagne, use dry prosecco. Prosecco is usually less sweet than champagne, and it also has fruity and floral hints of flavor as a delicious bonus!
