Trentadue Winery La Storia Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

2009 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Cabernet Sauvignon

Named the Best in Class at the 2021 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, this Cabernet hails from Californias region. Trentadue was first established in the late 1950s by Italian ranchers and married couple, Evelyn and Leo Trentadue, but today Bulgarian native, Miro Tcholakov, brings his expertise to the winery as head winemaker. Though this wine is every bit of an American Cab, it has a European sensibility to it, according to , sommelier and beverage director at The Waverly Inn. Its not just over-the-top voluptuous fruit, there are some layers and Old World earthiness to it. It pleases the drinker and the Napa drinker. And although youre paying for Sonoma wine, you still get that Napa and Bordeaux quality, he says.

The best cabernet sauvignon is crimson red. When you first take in the aroma, it’s hard to decide whether this will be an experience where you feel like sharing or keeping for yourself – but once your taste buds get involved, they know there’s no question: You’re going to want this wine all to yourself!

The first sniff of this wine is unmistakably spicy with its red currant, plum, and a hint of spice. On the palate is the taste of juicy black currant mixed with subtle coffee notes and savory cedar flavors that give way to a smooth finish that coats the buds gently.

The diversity in flavor profiles makes it uniquely flavorful while being approachable for any occasion or palate type!

Best Australian: 2018 Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon

Region: South Australia | ABV: 14.5% | Tasting Notes: Tomato leaf, Brown butter, Mocha

Try cabernet the Aussie way with this fruity rendition from Penfolds. This South Australian multi-regional blend is made with grapes from the countrys cooler climates, maturing in French and American oak for a full year. The result is this deep and structured wine thats worth crossing the Pacific for.

Youll find aromas of blackberry compote, on-the-vine tomato leaf, cassis, and brown butter sage out the gate. This is a medium-bodied wine with wispy tannins and flavors of black and red currant, cherry and nutty mocha. This wine tastes excellent today, but will also improve over the next decade.

Region: Colchagua Valley, Chile | ABV: 15% | Tasting Notes: Blackberry, Crème de cassis, Olive tapenade

The Lapostolle family is Chilean royalty, and a member of the family, Charles de Bournet Marnier Lapostolle, is president and CEO of Clos Apalta. With the help of two notable French winemakers, Michele Rolland and Jacques Begarie, they are producing some of the best cabernet blends on earth.

With 64% carménère, 19% cabernet sauvignon and 17% merlot, this is a compact red, bursting at the seams with black raspberry, blackberry, red currants, crème de cassis and olive tapenade. Grippy, powerful tannins are underscored by savory tobacco, mint, and cacaoall leading to a focused and harmonious finish.

Which Red Is Best For You

Lets face it, most of us out there arent wine experts, and if you are, youve probably graduated from the $20-a-bottle class of reds. But, if youre like most, you want something nice to sip on with a good steak or cigar. In that case, any of the above wines will do the trick. We might suggest trying a Pinot Noir first if youre a wine beginner. They tend to be the least offensive in terms of dryness and are considered a more drinkable wine.

Chianti Classico’s ancient Tuscan wine-producing region meets the newly discovered Maremma area in this elegant, full-bodied red. The old and the new are utilized to make a balanced wine that will please any palate.

This cab has a dark purple color with intriguing black cherry aromas. It is also filled with balsamic herbs and coffee notes that are intertwined alongside the toasted oak flavors.

Glenelly Estate Glass Collection Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Another recommendation from Tran is this Cabernet from Stellenbosch, which he says is a beautiful introduction to what the area has to offer. Showcasing an amazing concentration of fresh fruit, underlined by savory notes of dried herbs and tobacco that is uplifted by its acidity, this has everything and anything a Cabernet drinker would want in a glass, he says. Glenelly Estate has been in operation in Stellenbosch since the property was purchased in 2003 by May-Éliane de Lencquesaing, who comes from a family with more than 250 years of winemaking experience. This has always been a fun one to bring to the table and surprise many of my guests palates with when I reveal where the wine comes from, says Tran.

Rodney Strong Alexander Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

You’ll be surprised by the quality of this Cabernet because you can still taste its expensive structure and aroma but only pay half as much for it.

It doesn’t have the same texture or textured feel a fine wine would offer, but its soft tannins are well integrated into every glass to make an unforgettable experience.

This wine is luscious with dark berries, velvety plum, and a hint of chocolate. The barrel aging makes the tannins silky smooth for an elegant finish.

Vrit 2017 La Joie Red Sonoma County

Tasting like a great bottle of Château Lafite, the 2017 La Joie is based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon and brought up, I suspect, in mostly new French oak. Deep ruby-purple, with a heavenly bouquet of crème de cassis, lead pencil, cedarwood, graphite and tobacco, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, an incredible sense of elegance and purity, building tannins and a great, great finish. This majestic, regal Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is going to require a decade of cellaring to hit maturity and will see its 50th birthday in fine form. I followed this bottle for three days and it never showed a hint of oxidation. This is easily my wine of the vintage in 2017. Jeb Dunnuck

Is Cabernet Franc The Same As Cabernet Sauvignon

The Vice 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, The House, Napa Valley

No. They are similar in many respects, but are two different grape varieties. Cabernet Franc is a parent variety of Cabernent Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc has a thinner skin, so the wines made from it tend to be lighter in color and less tannic. It can also seem a little more leafy and peppery. Warm climate Cabernet Franc in particular can be mistaken for in blind tastings. In the vineyard, Cabernet Franc ripens one week earlier.

Continuum 2018 Sage Mountain Vineyard Napa Valley

This has incredible nuances and delicacy with power. Its full-bodied with lots of gentle tannins that spread across the palate. The character is full of blackberry, black currant and lead pencil. Some conifer and pine needles. Sage at the end, too. Savory. So long-lasting and layered. Such purity. Its so complex and changes all the time in the glass. Goes on for minutes. 54 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 31 percent Cabernet Franc, 9 percent Petit Verdot and 6 percent Merlot. Organically grown grapes. So drinkable now, but will age beautifully. James Suckling

Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Origin: Napa Valley, California, U.S.A.Varietal: 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 3% MalbecPrice: $41ABV: 14.5%

Michael and Arlene Bernstein were the first to plant grapevines on Mount Veeder in 1970. When their Cabernet cuttings took root and flourished, they knew they were on to something. Encouraged by their friend and Napa legend Robert Mondavi, the Bernsteins established the first winery on Mount Veeder. Today, the winery has three vineyard ranches nestled high in the Mayacamas Mountains, producing powerfully flavorful, concentrated wines that express their unique mountain terroir. This blend has a deep garnet color, a rich nose with ripe black currants, plum, black cherries with hints of chocolate and spices. The palate is loaded with ripe black fruits, fine tannins and good mountain acidity making for a well-balanced, complete and complex wine.

Niner Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

This wine has a big, bold taste and an acidity that keeps things lively on the palate. It’s kind of thick for a Californian Cabernet, and it has aromas of blackberries and earth. Tannins are present as well, but they’re seamlessly integrated into this wine to provide structure.

Niner Estate’s latest vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect wine to accompany your next meal. With a taste that lingers on dark cherry flavors, this elegant and finessed cab will be sure to please all palates with its natural acidity.

Bevan Cellars 2018 Dr Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Wine Of The Week

I always seem to compare great wines from this site with Haut-Brion, and I think the comparison holds here, although its a Haut-Brion on steroids! The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Dr. Crane Vineyard reveals a dense purple color as well as a powerful nose of ripe black fruits, tobacco leaf, earth, coffee beans and gravelly earth. All of these carry over to the palate, where the wine is full-bodied and has a deep, layered mid-palate, sweet tannins and a blockbuster of a finish. Hats off to the talented Russell Bevans for another brilliant, singular wine thats going to keep for 20 to 25 years. Jeb Dunnuck

Penley Estate Phoenix Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon

This complex Cabernet Sauvignon hails from Coonawarra, a wine region in South . Produced by winemakers, Kate Goodman and Lauren Hansen, it features luscious flavors of plum and blackberry, a sprinkle of cocoa, and supple tannins, resulting in a wine that is super fruity but also savory, says Kendeigh Worden, a sommelier who runs the wine education blog, The Grape Grind. Hearty and juicy at the same time. The fruit is intense and the structure is milder. Its really easy drinking for Cabernet, she adds.

Long Meadow Ranch Farmstead Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

This best cabernet sauvignon is one of the most balanced Cabernets from Napa Valley on this list. If you love an exceptionally balanced wine that doesn’t have a solid and intense oak or vanilla, then here it is!

The fruit isn’t overbearing but has focused well with hints of tannin in your mouth. It’s young yet mature already – meaning you can enjoy it now while it ages beautifully for years to come!

The wine’s nose is full of black cherry, cassis, violets, and spice. Bright red berry flavors are present on the front palate alongside a subtle tannins structure for support. A touch of sweet barrel toast lingers in every sip with a satisfying finish that will make you want to drink more!

With its complexity and delightful flavor profile, this wine would pair well with grass-fed beef or lamb as well as roasted game meat dishes such as rabbit or duck breast.

Best Washington: Woodward Canyon Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon

courtesy of woodwardcanyon.com

Region: Washington | ABV: 14.5% | Tasting Notes: Black cherry, Menthol, Baking spices

Washington State might seem like an odd place to cultivate a big, rich, warmth-loving red grape like cabernetafter all, isn’t Seattle rainy about ten months out of the year? Maybe so, but once you get east of the Cascade mountain range, the climate is considerably drier and sunnier, yielding one of the nation’s premier growing regions for hearty reds.

Only the second winery to be established in Washington’s prolific Walla Walla Valley, family-run Woodward Canyon has been churning out delicious reds since 1981, and their Artist Series cabernet is a blend of grapes sourced from some of the most highly regarded vineyards in the entire state, including the lengendary Sagemoor Vineyard. “The result is a silky, medium- to full-bodied wine bursting with notes of ripe black cherry, blueberry, cassis, warm baking spices, cedar, black pepper, menthol, and cocoa,” says Claire Coppi, a Certified Sommelier and a cast member on SOMM TV. “Wait about five years before opening, as the wine benefits highly from a little time to integrate in the bottle.”
