How To Ship Alcohol

There are four major shipping companies that are most commonly used by sellers shipping alcohol: UPS, FedEx, USPS, and DHL. All carriers that accept alcohol shipments will have a few things in common. First and foremost, you must indicate that the shipment contains alcohol, as a surcharge will be added to the delivery. And naturally, an adult over 21 must sign for the shipment. Besides these few similarities, these carriers will vary in quite a few ways.

Dont Be Afraid To Ask Your Carrier

Heres the bottom line: if you dont know something, just ask your carrier! UPS and FedEx have a lot of guidelines for you to follow in order to ship alcohol. However, both UPS and FedEx employ lots of customer service representatives ready to help you out at a moments noticeand that help goes a long way. Just remember to stay away from USPS on this oneat least until the laws change.

If they arenât firmly sealed in a box, wine bottles are at risk of breaking the box open, getting cracked, and leaking. While these events arenât likely, itâs always best to pack wine to prevent each of them.

You can use polystyrene foam, molded fiber inserts, or any firm, supportive material that doesnât take up much space. Cardboard alone wonât do the trick because it can easily be bent or torn, and plastic or paper sheeting isnât sufficient enough as padding between bottles.

You can also consult eCommerce shipping companiesâ websites for their recommendations on how to ship a bottle of wine. As businesses that have shipped billions of packages every year, they know what works and what doesnât. Using proven shipping materials and strategies will save you significant time and money.

How Extreme Temperatures Impact Shipping Wine

Wine is a perishable product. When subjected to extreme temperatures, your wine purchases may not arrive in the condition you expect.

For years, wine shipping in the heat of the summer has been discouraged. If the internal bottle temperature rises above 80°F, wine can begin to deteriorate. Nearing 86°F and above, wine starts to cook, and the pressure will begin pushing the cork out.

Wine and air begin to seep through the cork, leading to oxidation of the wine. The taste will not be fresh but subdued with cooked flavor characteristics.

You may not realize that extreme cold temperatures impact wine too. Due to its alcohol content, wine freezes at a lower temperature than water, around 20 – 22°F. Freezing can damage the wine, the cork, and the bottle. Wine not adequately protected during shipping can suffer significantly when external temperatures approach 5°F.

When water freezes, it expands as anyone who has left a bottle in the freezer knows. The same thing happens to wine. The liquid expands, and the pressure either pushes the cork out or breaks the bottle. When the cork pushes out, wine can leak out and air can leak in, enabling oxidation.

Shipping Wine In Winter January 12 2016 1: 43

When shipping in winter the goal is to avoid a frozen bottle of wine. Wine does not mind being cold. You may get some precipitation of tartrates but this does not harm the wine. I have never found a wine to be wrecked by freezing. But when it freezes into hard ice problems can happen. Wine like any liquid expands as it freezes. Inside the bottle there is not a lot of room for expansion. This is not good for the package. Two things can happen. You may have simulated this by putting a bottle in your freezer to cool it down quickly and forgetting it.

Cork Push It can get is pushed just a 1/4 inch or as in this example all the way out of the bottle.

  • The cork gets pushed out. This is called “cork push”
  • The bottle can crack.

How Do I Send Wine Myself In The Usa From Canada

My understanding is that the laws have loosened up on this over the last few years. It’s not part of what we do here at primewines.com, but I’m told that you no longer required to enlist a licensed 3rd party provided that you are shipping to yourself.

If you are purchasing directly from the winery, they can probably arrange to ship it to your home in the the USA. The operative word here is “winery.” Each winery has shipping laws dictated by their province. This would be my top recommendation

If you have purchased the wines already, you might try contacting FedEx. Some time back they initiated a program for shipping wine across the US/CA borders. Since you are prepared to declare the shipping contents and willing to pay any necessary duty/tax, FedEx should be able to get it done.

    Two approaches come to mind.

  • Work through the FedEx International Wine Shipping Guide then make a plan
  • Properly package up some bottles. With the purchase receipt in hand, take the box to your local FedEx Office location. Ask the clerk “Which form do i fill out to send these to my home in the USA?”
  • Feel free to contact me in the meantime if you have additional questions.

    How To Ship Alcohol In

On the surface, this seems like the easiest shipping method. Without crossing state lines, after all, you won’t have to worry about another state putting a stranglehold on your spirits. But there are still local laws to contend with, warns Seth Weinberg, food law and policy professor at Columbia Law School.

But luckily, because you will have to ship directly from the retailer or distributor, “local merchants are expected to know their own rules, and can serve as a great source of quick answers when you are considering buying a gift for someone,” Weinberg says. For example, some states may prohibit the shipment of more than one bottle at a time, or how many bottles of alcohol can be shipped to a person each year, says Mahesh Lekkala, owner of New York- and New Jersey-based Wine Legend. A good retailer will know these rules.

When you’re sending something closer to home, you have one more shipping option: use alcohol e-commerce sites, such as Drizly or Minibar, for example, to mail your friend a congratulatory bottle of wine or a thank-you six-pack of beer by taking advantage of their in-town delivery options, some free.

SHIPPING TIPS DURING SEVERE SUMMER & WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONSDuring severe weather PetesWineShop.com ships wine orders only at the beginning of each week in order to ensure the wine orders arrive before the weekend. This prevents the wine from sitting in a UPS warehouse over the weekend, exposed to uncontrolled conditions.

For orders to LA & NV and the east coast we dont advise using UPS ground services during extreme weather conditions. We suggest up-grading to 3-day select, 2nd-day air or next day air as the shipping option. 3-day select, is around $20-$30 more per case than ground services but well worth the added protection from exposure of your wine order. Although we do our best to ensure the safety of our wine shipments, during Severe Weather Conditions PetesWineShop.com is not responsible for weather related damage to wine.
