What Our Guests Are Saying

This is a great little place for a wine tasting. Perched upon a hillside it overlooks a magnificent vista. The tastings are very reasonable in price and some are for free depending on your choice. The wines are quite good. Having previously been to California and the Napa Valley as well as Oregon I would say these wines are very good in value and well made. Cheers to the winemakers. You can also purchase antipasto to eat with your tasting or glass of wine at a reasonable price. If in the area I would not miss this place.

Very friendly service and yummy wine! Beautiful establishment and nice to do on a rainy day.

An incredibly beautiful spot! The old barn with the exposed beams is charming and cozy. A wonderful place for an event. What can be better than drinking wine and browsing through a well-curated gift shop. The staff knows their stuff and wine is good

We were there for a bachelorette wine tasting and it was an amazing experience! The staff was knowledgeable and super friendly. Thank you for helping us make wonderful memories for our bride to be!

Amazing from the moment we walked in till the moment we drove out. Incredible service, staff extremely knowledgeable, warm and friendly. Don’t make the mistake of not dropping in, you will regret it, I promise

Three Choirs Cellar Door Bacchus 2013

GRAPES: Bacchus RRP: £15.00

Our dear friend Bacchus stays true to form in Gloucestershire soils. The aromatics are dialled up here. Full of citrus, floral and greenery. Although not overly grassy or nettly.

The guillotine sharpness grabs your attention. Full of citrus, cooking apple and pear. Some grass shoots and a hint of vegetation.

It’s swift from the front to the back of the palate. Blink and you’ll miss it. Then the finish keeps coming. The acidity is sky high, but there’s good structure to accommodate it.

A Symbol Of Welcome And Friendship

As the story goes, a hobo, a traveler looking for work nearly 100 years ago, visited our farm in Lincolnville. He was welcomed. He felt safe. Upon his departure, he carved in the barn door a hobo symbol to let fellow travelers know they would find hospitality here.

All these years later, we have proudly embraced, are motivated by, this story and the spirit of welcome meant to be offered to guests. While the door with the fabled hand carving is treasured, we have adopted a current day artists interpretation of it as our logo. It is our inspiration to beat our guests expectations, to offer a respite from busy lives.

When you see our Hobo symbol, know that you are in a safe and friendly place. We invite you to our Cellardoor properties with open hearts, generosity, and camaraderie. Whether you join us for a tour of our winery, a wine tasting, a food and wine pairing, or one of our big events, we hope you enjoy your time with us.

Three Choirs Ros 2015

GRAPES: Phoenix, Reichensteiner & Rondo RRP: £9.00

A high quality, hallmark dry rosé expression made predominantly from a blend of Phoenix, Reichensteiner & Rondo. So satisfying the demand has driven a significant rise in production each year for the last 5 years. It’s now one of their biggest selling wines.

It brings pronounced red berry upfront with nice evolution introducing refreshing red fruit notes. It offers a level of brightness beyond typical English Rosés, then there’s a touch of saline that gives it another dimension.

A good citrus backbone and noticeably low sugar levels result in a moreish finish. Its easy to see why this is so popular.

Visiting the cellar door at smaller boutique wineries is also a great opportunity to stock up on their wines. Boutique wine is harder to find in commercial stores, so it is worth visiting in order to get your hands on a few bottles before they disappear!

No matter what your wine knowledge is a trip to the cellar door is a fantastic way to enjoy wineries. Learn more about the fabulous wines you already enjoy drinking and how they came to be. Be sure to head to some cellar doors throughout the Yarra Valley for a fantastic day of fine wine drinking.

If Youve Ever Been To A Winery Considered A Winery Tour Or Researched A Specific Wine Region Chances Are Youve Seen The Term Cellar Door Thrown Around A Fair Bit But What Does It Mean

The term Cellar Door is one of those which has stuck around for some time though has very little meaning now, like the term hang up the phone for example. We no longer hang phones on the wall, but we still use the term. Anyway, back to cellar doors. The term seems to be a primarily Australian one, with wineries around the word not using the term as often.

Historically wine was made, stored, and aged, underground. With cool room technology not yet developed, building underground cellars was the best way to obtain a stable cool temperature. Large wineries would have total labyrinths of underground wine stores. And so it began. People would knock on the cellar doors to alert wine makers to their presence. As time went on, the cellar doors became fitted areas used for tastings and sales.

Today cellar doors are a key part of many wineries. However, they are less frequently attached to the wine making area itself. Instead they are stand alone buildings specifically designed to enhance tasting experiences and may include a store and food options.

Three Choirs Cellar Door Siegerrebe 2014

GRAPES: Siegerrebe RRP: £15.00

This curious variety is something Three Choirs pride themselves on. Siegerrebe is the first to be harvested each year, then goes on to be used in this single varietal wine, as a component of their white blends and also as a dessert wine . Its a hybrid crossing of Madeleine Angevine and Gewürztraminer.

Awesome nose. Reminded of a brilliant bone-dry Trimbach Gewürtz I had not long ago. Light violet perfume with grapefruit and nice waxy scents. Could sniff it all day.

The attack retains intrigue and interest. The layered palate unfolds bringing a combination of floral, citrus and herbal. The finish has a nice lift and zing.

Could be brilliant with right food. Ben Hawker recommends Sushi.

Don’t Miss: Lowest Calorie Wine With Highest Alcohol Content

Three Choirs Classic Cuve Nv

GRAPES: Seyval Blanc, Pinot Noir & Phoenix RRP: £15.00

One of the country’s most famous, and widely available Sevyal-led sparklers. There’s also some Pinot Noir and Phoenix in the blend. This spends up to 20 months on lees and receives a marginal 0.7g dosage.

It has a spiked floral nose and an expansive attack full of lemon rind. Slightly savoury character thats more leesy that yeasty, but the racy zing keeps any broad elements at bay. I loved the punctuating sorbet-like finish at front of mouth.

A revitalising fizz thats brilliant value for money. Amongst the best I can recall tasting at £15.

Why Go To The Cellar Door

There are many benefits in visiting a cellar door. Firstly, visit cellar doors is the best way to see wineries. Most wineries wont allow you to simply rock up and start wandering their grounds. Instead they welcome you to their cellar doors where you can learn about the wine making process and perhaps even speak to expert staff about the wines on offer.

Here you can generally taste wines also. There may be a small charge, however tastings are a fantastic way to try a variety of wines. Taste varieties you might not usually drink, without buying a whole bottle. Once youve completed a tasting, youll have a better idea of what wine produced at that winery you enjoy most and can purchase a bottle of wine with confidence. Some wineries even offer tasting plates with their wine tastings, carefully pairing food with the drinks to give you the best experience.

Some tastings may be presented as a tasting flight, that is several wines served to you for you to sample alone, however most tastings will be guided. During the tasting you should expect to get a brief history of the winery and an explanation of the types of wine produced. As you taste each wine its flavour profile will be explained to you and you will be instructed on how to best taste it. Additionally, you should be told about its vintage, ageing, grape variety and what it pairs well with.
