White wine can have as little as 1.5 grams of sugar, again dependent on the brand and amount you’re drinking. White wine is the lighter, crisper, sweeter wine. You likely began your journey as a wine drinker with a glass of white wine. It is the most accessible wine, and thanks to its sweeter flavor profile, more sugary. White wine is made from white grapes. How surprising! Unlike red wine, these grapes are peeled prior to the fermentation process. Yes, sugar can be found in all wines. From reds to whites to cooking wine and everything in between, there is definitely some amount of sugar to be found. It is the type of wine and winemaker that will determine just how much.

Wine is made from grapes, which naturally contain sugar. To achieve the sweet nectar we call wine, these grapes must be fermented. This is a process through which cultured yeast is added and the natural sugars are broken down into alcohol. It’s a bit more complicated than that, but this is the general process. Any sugars that aren’t converted in the process are called residual sugars. These are the reason the wine you’re drinking contains some sugar, but less than if you ate the grapes it was made from. Aged wine will also have less sugar since tit has had more time for fermentation.

Depending on the desired sweetness, winemakers may also add sugar after fermentation. This is particularly true in the US, where the market for sweets is higher. This is also why there tend to be higher calories in wine made in the US.

Understanding Sugar Levels In Wine

Now that you know the bad news about consuming too much sugar, we have some good news: You don’t have to take wine off the table. While there is technically no such thing as sugar-free wine since all alcohol is derived from sugar, there are wines that exist without any added sugars.   • Cheap wine usually has residual sugar. Its safe to assume that most affordable wines from the US contain some residual sugar, perhaps anywhere from 215 g/L. There are, of course, excellent exceptions to this rule so look for more information first.
  • Drink slightly better wine. If you spend a little more on a bottle of wine, say around $1525, producers tend to feature less residual sugar . Grapes are higher quality so the wines dont need sweetness to taste fruity.
  • Drink slightly less. Even at 15 g/L RS, a wine will only add about 7.5 sugar calories which isnt much! Like with all things, moderation is key!

    For anyone on the keto diet, the question of how much wine is okay to drink actually becomes one of whether its okay to drink wine at all.

    You might be able to drink wine on a ketogenic diet, but even small amounts may be enough to bump you out of nutritional ketosis, explains Paul Kriegler, RD, an assistant program manager at Life Time.

    Do All Wines Contain Sugar

    In a word, yes. All wine has a little bit of residual sugar, trace amounts that the yeast misses when its converting the sugar to alcohol. Even the sugar-free BASK wines contain a pinchthe pinot noir and sauvignon blanc each have about 4 g/L the crisp rosé clocks in at just 2 g/l. But, since there are seven glasses of wine per litre, thats less than a gram per glassand thats considered essentially zero in wine circles.

    We went to a registered dietician, Lesley Seto, who has a practice in Halifax called Embodhi, to ask if this was something to celebrate. The less sugar, the better, right?

    You have to look at what, exactly, it is youre drinking, said Seto, If you have a dry wine, for example, the amount of sugar in it is often quite low and you might find that the wine youre used to drinking only has maybe six grams of sugar per litre in it anyway. So, if youre only going for a drink with friends once a week, or once every two weeks, it wouldnt really be a huge concern.

    If youre drinking any of the standard dry wines, including, say, tempranillo, chianti, chardonnay or pinot grigio, to name a few, youre probably already drinking something with less than 5 g/L of sugar that could be considered effectively sugar-free. And, quite a few pinot noir and sauvignon blancs are also under 5 g/lsome as low as 2 g/l. Since theres no law requiring nutritional information on wine labels, though, few of us have any idea of the sugar levels.
