Q: How Long Does Wine Last After It’s Opened
A: If youre quick to get the cork back in or have a good wine stopper, then you could save your wine for up to five days but even utilizing this process, the taste and quality will be slightly compromised and your wine just wont taste the say way those tasting notes from the winemaker intended it to be. No more hint of black cherries and notes of licorice. For white and rose, of course, youre also going to need to get that opened bottle of wine into your refrigerator. Sparkling wine is more delicate still and you safely only really have three days before thats unquaffable.
Pivot Wine Preservation System

The Pivot System is easy to use and works with any still wine regardless of closure type: natural cork, synthetic, glass, or screwcap. Simply open the bottle and immediately insert the Pivot Stopper. Pour a glass of Cabernet at the end of a long day or pair your favorite Riesling with Tuesday night takeout. The choice is yours.
How is the Pivot System different from other Coravin Systems?
All Coravin Systems deliver the opportunity for you to enjoy your wine the way you want to versus having to commit to the bottle. The key differences between the Pivot System and other Coravin Systems are how each works and the length of preservation each provides.
How is the Pivot System different from other wine preservation systems?
Many other systems work by removing air that has already entered the bottle, which will only preserve wine for a few days. If used correctly the Pivot will preserve wine appearance, aroma, and flavor for up to 4 weeks. It delivers the best-in-class short-term wine preservation in the market for under $100.

Wine Vacuum Stopper By Cheer
- Window With Vacuum Status And Date
- Keeps Wine Fresh For Up To 7 Days
The Cheer Wine Vacuum Stopper takes a little bit from several other systems in that its a stopper as well as a vacuum pump in one. Of course, this also means that you can only use one per bottle, but it is reusable.
After opening the bottle and pouring your desired amount out, you place the Cheer Vacuum Stopper on top and press down firmly with the palm of your hand. It pops back up and you press it again. It usually takes six to seven pumps to pull a full vacuum.
A small window on the side of the stainless-steel stopper tells you the state of the vacuum inside the bottle. You can also use it to set the date. Cheer rate their Wine Vacuum Stopper to preserve a bottle of wine for up to seven days. Though this might vary depending on the vintage.
The stopper itself seals tight enough to allow you to store the bottle horizontally without leaking. Just bear in mind that its not designed to handle thick, wide mouth bottles or champagne bottles. You can also use it to preserve spirits like whiskey, bourbon, and Scotch.
Still Wine Preservers Compared
Oxygen has a complicated relationship with wine. Sometimes its a friend, as in our aeration test. Controlled, it can be advantageous at certain stages of winemaking. But if you open a bottle and leave some wine undrunk, oxygen in the air becomes an enemy in a matter of minutes or days .
In a series of chemical reactions with components of the wine, it oxidises the wine. The colour turns towards orange and brown, and the wine begins to taste flatter, less fruity, losing varietal aromas and taking on dull, baked-apple, nutty flavours.
It may taste more tannic because fruitiness no longer distracts from the bitterness. At some point it turns vinegary.

A Growing Number Of Wine
I RARELY SAVE my unfinished bottles of wine. Few wines are as good, let alone better, on the second or third day as they are on the first. Im more likely to give away half-finished bottles to my friends and neighbors than I am to squirrel them away for another dayalthough, to be honest, theres never a lot of unfinished wine in our house.
I realize that Im very much in the minority. Almost everyone I know seems to have several half-drunk bottles stored on their kitchen counters or inside their refrigerator doors. I dont know if that means theyre drinking much more than I am, or much less, but it may help account for the growing market for wine-preservation tools. Marshall Tilden III, director of sales at Wine Enthusiast, a leading retail and wholesale purveyor of wine accessories based in Mount Kisco, N.Y., said sales of preservation devices are up 15% last year over 2010 figures. Sales of expensive systems such as Coravin and EuroCave Wine Art are particularly strong, he added.
More On Wine
Ive never used any wine-preservation devices, but I have wondered from time to time how well they work.
Ive never used any wine-preservation devices, but I have wondered from time to time how well they work. I decided to try a few of the more basic tools and conduct my own highly unscientific test.

Vacuum Wine Preservation Systems
Vacu Vin was the first vacuum system to emerge in the wine preservation market niche. Their early success and long-term staying power have inspired competitors to offer similar models that pretty much do the same thing.
Air is extracted from the void in an open bottle of wine, through a stopper that has a tiny one-way valve in it. Some require batteries, while others use manual hand pumps.
The price on these is usually low, and they make a great entry-level way to keep your wine fresh. The stoppers are also low enough that you can store a bottle upright in your refrigerator, which isnt something you can always do with a reinserted cork.
Private Preserve True 102: $8
This spray bottle from Private Preserve contains a mixture of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon.
Just spray inside the wine bottle according to the instructions and recork. Argon is heavy, so it sinks and lays on the surface of the wine to protect it from oxygen. When its time to enjoy another glass, simply pour and aerate the wine as usual.
The gases are all nonreactive, food safe, and do not alter the nose or flavor of the wine.
One container is enough to preserve about 120 bottles of wine making this an easy and inexpensive way to preserve wine.
Its useful for other spirits, as well, including whiskey, port, and sherry.

Wine Aerators And Preservers
In this category is included a number of devices designed to pump wine out of the bottle and aerate it while pouring. Because these devices are applied on the neck of the bottle and stick to it with airtight seals, they also have the property of preserving wine, albeit for a shorter time.
The most performing wine preserver and aerator is Genesis. This device comes with several caps and the system injects an inert gas into the bottle right after opening, pushing out any air that might have got into the bottle.
In this case, air exposure is minimal and the wine will preserve its properties for a few weeks. Genesis also works with sparkling wine, preserving it for up to 5 days.
The other wine aerator and preserver pumps work on the same principle but without the use of inert gas. As such, unless you decide to use inert gas separately, they are only able to preserve wine for up to a week.
Types Of Wine Preservation Systems:
There are basically two different systems that most manufacturers adopt when it comes to the technique used for preserving your opened bottle of wine and those are Spray and Vaccum
Spray this involves protecting the surface of your wine with a coating of gas, usually inert gas argon or a mix of non-toxic gases. The gas is heavier than the air and so prevents further air from entering into the wine and causing oxidization.
Vacuum in the vacuum method, a pump will be used to extract the air out of the bottle before a seal can is then applied to stop any oxygen from re-entering. This tends to be the most cost-effective and simplest option.

The Different Coravin Models
Coravin has 4 distinct models. Each of these is available in multiple specifications, luxury editions, and colors. The models are the Model One, Model Two, Model Two Elite and Model Eleven.
The original Coravin Wine Preserver System, Model One, is the most affordable. Prices go up the more add-ons you want. Add-on options include additional argon capsules, needles or storage cases etc.
The most luxurious model, the Coravin Limited Edition II Bundle Starry Night, is at the top end of the budget. Making this the ultimate indulgence in Coravins premium assortment. This beauty has been my personal wish-list for a while, so lets hope my husband takes note!

Vintner Wine Preserver And Dispenser
If you like to keep more than one bottle open at a time, a multi-bottle system may better suit your needs. The Vintner Wine Preserver and Dispenser allows you to sample from three bottles of wine for weeks without worrying about a loss of flavor. This system features an attractive oak rack that displays the three bottles. Dispenser nozzles fit into the necks of each bottle and are connected with tubing to a nitrogen canister that’s hidden behind the display rack. To pour a glass from any of the three bottles, you simply lift the handle on the corresponding nozzle.
The Vintner Wine Preserver and Dispenser is pricey compared to The Keeper. At about $350, it’s a less practical purchase, but it does solve a problem for home wine enthusiasts who don’t like to limit themselves to one open bottle at a time. Unless you have a shelf of your refrigerator that is dedicated solely to wine storage, finding room for this unit may be a challenge. Just like with The Keeper, it’s essential that you insert the nozzles into the bottles as soon as you open them.
Zos Halo Wine Preserver: $60
The ZOS HALO is another stopper system that contains an oxygen-scrubbing cartridge.
Its pricier than the Sello system, but it also takes the technology to the next level. The cartridges have sensors that take the guesswork out of cartridge replacement.
Theyre self-testing and will flash a green light if the cartridge is still good or a red light if it needs replacing. Each lasts for use in up to 15 bottles and it is so effective that it keeps wine fresh for up to two months.
We also love the look of this system, which is a bit more elegant than most stopper and cartridge preservation solutions. Its well worth the investment.
