Thomson & Scott launched in 2016 with a low sugar prosecco. Off the back of this success, it wasnt long before they bought their non-alcoholic offering to market Noughty AF, again with the focus on keeping the sugar content low without compromising on flavour.

The Noughty AF starts life as a sparkling Chardonnay which is then dealcoholised to retain it’s wonderful flavours and pale colour. It’s soft apple scent carries with it a touch of sweetness this is mirrored in the flavour.

What Is Dry January And What Are The Best Non

ByJames Carter

DESPITE our best efforts to exhibit some sort of self-control at Christmas, our trousers always feel a little bit tighter in the weeks that follow probably because of the countless rounds of drinks we enjoyed with loved ones over the festive season.

Five years ago, we probably wouldnt have been able to tell you what Dry January was but these days, it feels like everybody and their mother has pledged to give up booze for the next four weeks.

Heres everything you need to know about Dry January including some non-alcoholic drinks thatll rival your favourite tipple.

Is It Completely Free Of Alcohol

Non-alcoholic means that substitute ingredients have been used in place of the alcohol. These ingredients include sugar, apple juice, grape must, and flavourings. Alcohol-free implies no substitute for the alcohol has been added, although it does not necessarily mean that the wine is completely free of alcohol.

These wines are typically made using a combination of techniques: the grape must from red grapes is fermented until it becomes an alcoholic wine.

The fermentation process is then interrupted before all the sugar has been turned into alcohol .

The result is a grape juice containing a little residual sugar and 0.5% -1% ABV.

Less than 0.5% ABV makes it permissible to be sold in many countries without an age restriction. Non-alcoholic wines should not be confused with sparkling wines such as Champagne and Asti Spumante, naturally containing little to no alcohol.*

And now for some good news: studies have shown that alcohol-free wine can have health benefits!

Low Carbs Or Keto Diet & Going Alcohol Free

There’s a number of reasons that people might be looking to reduce the carbohydrates in their diet, with a popular reason being the Keto Diet.

With the Keto Diet, the key to its success is keeping the body in a state of ketosis. This is achieved by keeping the daily intake of carbohydrates low, normally under 50 grammes per day. In other words less than the carbohydrates in a plain bagel.

Going Low Carb doesnt mean you have to stick to water.

Everything consumed is included in this 50g which makes keeping a close eye on the carbs in drinks very important. As alcoholic drinks can have high carbohydrate volumes, some people decide this is a great time to make the switch and go alcohol free. Unfortunately, it’s not quite as simple as cutting the alcohol to reduce the carbohydrates.

Region: Penedès, Spain | Body: Medium-bodied | Tasting Notes: Lemon skin, Stone fruit, Honey

Codorniu has long been a leading producer of cava, so it makes sense that their dealcoholized sparkler is just as delicious. On the palate, notes of lemon skin, white stone fruit, honey and citrus rind lead to a pleasantly lingering finish. Serve nicely chilled with fresh seafood, salads or crudité platters.

Once you remove the alcohol, the beverage reminds you of wine, although it doesnt taste exactly like it, explains Cowez, who reveals that dealcoholized wines are generally rebuilt with natural flavors and oenological products to replicate the elements lost during distillation.

Health Benefits Of Going Alcohol Free

I’ve talked about the health benefits of going alcohol free a number of times, so I won’t repeat myself here. However, one additional benefit of going alcohol free when on a low carb diet is your food decisions are unimpaired by alcohol.

Those moments after a few drinks where you might have given in to temptation are no longer a risk. You’re more likely to make good decisions and work towards achieving your goals.

This is especially important on a keto diet when consuming too many carbs can break the state of ketosis in the body. Being able to keep on the straight and narrow will help you achieve your goals much faster.

Does It Raise Money For Charity

While Dry January is first and foremost a behaviour change campaign, it does also give those who take part the opportunity to make a difference to peoples lives by raising money for or donating to the charity behind Dry January, Alcohol Change UK, as well as saving money themselves.

By signing up online to take part, participants will receive tips and stories along their month-long break from alcohol. People who download the free Try Dry app or sign up for coaching emails from Alcohol Change UK are twice as likely to have a totally alcohol-free month compared to those taking on Dry January alone, and have significantly improved wellbeing and healthier drinking six months later.

What Is Grape Juice

Grape juice is exactly what you think it is – the juice from crushed grapes. There are many different ways to get juice from grapes but most common involves crushing the grapes and heating them to extract the most flavour before cooling down and storing. Commercially available grape juices can often go through clips a process of pasteurisation. This removes the naturally occurring yeasts and moulds within the grapes before the juice is packaged for sale.

You can even make your own at home relatively easily if you start with a lot of grapes and some patience.

Whether its commercially available or homemade grape juice, the goal of these different processes is always the same to capture the natural flavour of the grapes within a juice.
